  1. In case anyones wondering what happened. I bought this computer over a year ago and wanted to give an update. I did a few period correct modifications such as the power supply with silver tube wire covering over it (pulled from a PC from the same era) as well as period correct IDE cables. Also added a dragon on the outer vent that goes over the filter (before it was just a filter). It was in fact the 1.2GHz AMD "thunderbird" Athlon variant (making this a Alienware Area 51 Aurora shipped with Windows ME). Here it is currently with the original motherboard/CPU and a MSI nVidia GeForce4 4200Ti installed running NFS Underground. Plans are to add some period neon lighting inside and a matching SoundBlaster Audigy 2 bay unit for the sound card currently installed.
  2. I'm in love with your light up cables and the whiteout theme! I've got that Royal Z RAM as well New internals for the Compaq Presario 4712! 3. Welcome to the Sleeper/Old modded case club! Would also be nice to share on SleeperBattlestations on reddit. Here's mines. Old pic, ignore my hideous GPU filler after selling the previous one. It has an evga gtx 980 ti in it now... still sad Compaq Presario Sleeper & Megabyte Computer INC Server by Shyzah, on Flickr
  4. Someone say card sag? I didn't really have much of an option but to use a paperclip. Old before & after pics.
  5. Update! It's been complete for some time. Will post photos at the end of this post. As for the previous replies, I completely missed the posts about the Model M. I've been using the Model M as a daily since it was restored and I love it. It's been attached to my sleeper with an MSI mobo thru the PS/2 slot with no problems I purchased a AT cable for the Model M as I needed it to work some 486 systems. I sold off the other Model M after bolt mod + new missing key caps for a little under $300 on eBay. IBM 35sx After Restoration by Shyzah, on Flickr I was able to find an original power button on eBay. Staff! Anyway this could be moved to "Build Log" thread as Bombastinatior recommended??
  6. I thought that was the problem too but I did switch power plans and even tried running Linux (which showed the same clock speeds) November 2021 update: Never resolved the issue and sold the motherboard off as for $35 as "parts/not working"
  7. Snapped the pic while I was messing with all the CPU core control settings. I changed it back to normal with no difference. Nice catch tho!
  8. Hi all, I have an MSI a88xm Gaming motherboard from 2015 that i've owned since new. It's an AMD FM2+ socket that houses an Athlon x4 860k CPU. It has an evga 500w power supply. This setup has been through many cases and thrown around here and there and overclocked a ton. Put it all together after a year of sitting for a starter minecraft server. The Athlon x4 860k runs at 3.9-4.2ghz on start up and then immediately goes to 1.7ghz and stays there even under prime 95 benchmark load. The temps are perfectly fine! No where near thermal throttling temps! Troubleshooting I've done: Swapped CPU with known good one. Supposed to run at 3.9ghz max, runs at 1.3ghz all the time (off load & under load). Swapped PSU with known good one. No difference. Swapped RAM, no difference. Upgraded BIOS, reset BIOS, changed all BIOS settings, no difference. SLOW switch on motherboard is off. Windows 10 power mode is set to "High Performance, no difference. Tried Ubuntu in case windows was being windows again, no difference. NOW, I swapped motherboard with known good one, CPU runs at full speed!!! ^so this is why i suspect the mobo. Someone said bad VRMs? Idk pic1: 8 hours into troubleshooting at 4am w/ no fuccs given and my head is spinning pic2: running at low speeds during prime95 benchmark
  9. Just and update. The CRT has been successfully restored on <removed by staff>. PC is basically done as well!
  10. I just purchased one a few weeks ago in very bad condition for 30 bucks. The original ones with Intellieye are kinda hard to come across. I dont care about collection though. Just wanted to swap the laser part of it into the Compaq ball version of the intellimouse to match my sleeper build.
  11. Forgive me if this is the wrong section of the forum. Not done with the restoration, but I am done with one of the IBM Model Ms as well as the Bolt Mod. I found two IBM Model Ms in a abandoned mental asylum. Also IBM 35SX computers. CRTs had wires cut and everything was supposed to be junked 26 years ago. Surprised I found them in the half burnt down building. Doing a full restoration. Computer fired up. Restored + bolt modded one of the Model Ms and got one more to go. The cleaning process was very rigorous, more rigorous than the getting out of the place with a giant ass computer without getting spotted by po po (Lets just say, it aint my first time saving old tech). I wanted to make sure there wasn't a single germ left on this. It was basically a raccoon, rat, and coyote bathroom for 26 years. The animal piss also denigrated part of the traces which had to be painted in which was fun. I'll upload the restoration on YouTube when I'm done editing. (The PC/CRT will be in another video). The place I found it in was more than scary and pretty remote (Especially the part that was burnt to crisp). However, as soon as I saw old computers I hopped right thru that tiny window lmao. Computer appears cleaner in the first photo because it was dusted off a little.
  12. Compaq Presario 4700 series. Parents bought it in 1996. Given to me when it was obsolete. Still have it today with newer internals. Probably the last one of these fat face Compaqs still in daily use. Oh and yes, the floppy still works. Used a fancy internal floppy drive IDE to usb adapters. <link removed by staff><link removed by staff> by <link removed by staff> <link removed by staff> by<link removed by staff> compaq 1996 cropped by <link removed by staff>
