File Servers don't need ECC. ECC is kind of mandatory if you are running mission critical VMs, but for flat file services it's not something I lose sleep over. Like, all those zillions of Synology / QNAP boxes or Linus file server distros are running ECC - lol. Typically you end up wanting to run VMs on you file server and wish you had more RAM. I have so much used ECC laying around it's criminal.

Old servers are a pain in the ass for this role unless they already have a card in JBOD mode .

Beg, borrow or steal a used desktop that will hold your drives and just use that.

I don't doubt that consumer hardware would be OK for my usage, but I'm struggling to find a system that will fit the bill for around $100. Old servers on the other hand, I'm finding for that price left and right on ebay.

    Do you have suggestions?

If you want to reuse that RAM, get a 2011-3 workstation with a Xeon. An HP Z440 can be had for about $100 in the US if you don't mind a few scratches.

    Oh snap! You're right!

This may end up being the way I go.

In my search I managed to find systems with W-2135 cpus for roughly the same price. Would that be a worthy upgrade if it means forfeiting a bunch of cores for now?

  3. Hi everyone. Been a while...

Lately I have been working with large datasets, (raw video and photo editing) and I desperately need a file server as my system is totally full and collaboration is nearly impossible.

I started building a server using an old HP proliant DL180 Gen 9 2u server. That was a complete disaster.

I was primarily using it because I have several 32GB registered ECC dimms.

Well I'm scrapping the server entirely as I was unable to make it quieter for home use.

But I still need a server.

Here's the problem, I have hardware but it's crappy proprietary office workstations, or this 2U server, but virtually no money to spend on it.

I have storage, and those dimms (although I realize I probably won't be able to use any of them as nothing supports registered ECC dimms apparently), but I need a cpu, motherboard (with lots of SATA headers), and a power supply.

Am I just out of luck here or can I do anything with any of this?

    I'm slightly confused.

It's normal for games to shoot up in framerate when there's nothing going on, and then tank when there's more items on screen. That's just how that works.

To expect a steady frame rate across the board at max settings is....unreasonable to say the least.

I agree that is normal. I was just expecting a bit more from a 1080ti. Especially when the card is only using 60% of its cababilities.

I too had an R7 1700 and A GTX 1080 Ti, the low clock speeds of the R7 1700 hold you back in gaming.

So it is reasonable to think the CPU is at fault. Can't say I have ever experienced a situation like that

    3 hours ago, LAwLz said:

What type of frame rate are you getting, what is your monitor capable of, what settings are you using?

If you're getting ~90 FPS with 60% utilization then I don't think there is anything wrong with your setup.

Frame rate is anywhere from 80-90 fps.

    The monitor can do 144.

I am currently running the max settings at 2560X1080

I don't think there is necessarily an issue so much as just not what I was expecting. I haven't been in a situation where the graphics card didn't ramp all the way up 100% during gameplay.

  5. Hi all,

I just bought a second hand GTX 1080ti for my system.

The card works fine, and runs well.

My issue though is that during some game play in Destiny 2 (likely the most demanding title I play on this system) I'm noticing that card inst becoming the inferno that it was during stress tests.

Turns out that on average I'm seeing an average of 50-60% utilization.

My first thoughts lead me to think that it was a CPU or RAM bottleneck.

I ran HWmonitor during an hour of gameplay only to realize that the CPU isn't being pushed to its limit either.

So now I am really confused. I know that game can achieve more than 90FPS because it does so on occasion when nothing is really going on.

Also take note, the one thread at 92% was only for a short time.

Below I've posted a screenshot of my HWmonitor's max utilization during 1 hour of game play in Destiny 2

Even though the CPU isnt maxed out, is this what a CPU bottleneck looks like?

    PC specs:

    Ryzen 7 1700 (3.7GHz)

    32GB RAM @3000MHz

    GTX 1080ti

    System resolution: 2560X1080

    Thank you.

  6. Hi all,

    I have a Sapphire nitro+ RX 480 8GB card with an issue.
The card has constant artifacts across the screen. Even during idle on the desktop.

I had a similar (but much worse) problem with this exact model about 2 months after I bought it new back in 2016 (I think). I RMA'd that car back to Sapphire and they said they could not replicate my issue but they sent me a brand new card anyway.

When I got the replacement, which is the card I have now, it still had the issue to a lesser degree.

I have tried this card in multiple different computers with multiple OS installs.

I have tried updating the driver multiple times.

I have tried both BIOSes on the card itself

I have tried under-clocking the GPU and memory
I have tried multiple displays and display outputs

I cant seem to get rid of it.

up until recently It has been use in our HTPC and didn't really get used much.

I suddenly care about it because that PC is the 3rd most powerful PC in the house and thus we are running an oculus rift on it.

Here's what I can say about the artifacts themselves.

-They do not move. Once they are on a certain element they will stay in that spot until the element goes away

-The artifacts are never like flashes of light or anything like that. Instead it fails to render like 3% of the overall element on screen and just leaves black or grey spots behind. (see my picture)
-on this particular setup, it has problems in the BIOS (need to test this on other setups) Not only are the artifacts far worse in the BIOS, but it causes a BIOS freeze too. not sure why though. (see my other picture [that little red dot in the middle there was where my mouse cursor was. The stuff on the bottom appeared after I had my cursor over it.])

Am I stuck having to buy another graphics card or is there anything I can do to fix this one?

  7. My company just wrote off some old Android computers.  The computer itself is an industrial panel running Android 4.4.4.

    Here is the product page

    https://teguar.com/tp-a945-07-android-panel-pc.html

It is not possible to update it beyond that. The OS is baked into a soldered on emmc chip and does not have an accessable boot loader of any kind.

The unit has a touchscreen, 2 USB ports, an SD card slot, a micro USB, an ethernet port and a db9 Com port. That's about it. There is no battery, no wifi, no Bluetooth, no Google services, no GPS, no speakers, no cameras, and no physical buttons.

It comes with 1GB of RAM and 4GB of storage.

It's a very simple computer that is purpose built to only have one function when deployed in an industrial environment. Usually these are programmed to run something like a large conveyer, or a punch clock or a machine or some kind.

I don't really know Android well enough to code for it and it doesn't seem overtly useful as is.

So I turn to the community. A Co worker of mine suggested he would use his as aa makeshift elgato stream deck. I like that idea alot but I have no idea how we would do it. I also open to other ideas too

Let me know what you think.

what would you use this for?

Whats good out there?  Smart watches with vibration mode? Anything else specifically  designed for that?  Goal is to get something  that will silently  wake up partner without  disturbing the othet person.

I have a Garmin vivoactive HR smart watch. I can set a vibration alarm on it. Actually vibration is actually the only way the watch outputs to the user aside from the screen. The vibration can be a little loud but its far quieter than an audible alarm.

No never had a problem when it came to speed, with a paid one (PureVPN). However Netflix cracked down on VPNs since, don't know whether you need to get extra creative.

    Well dang.

It might not be worth it then to rebuy Netflix, and get a VPN if there's that chance that Netflix would just deny it anyway

  10. 1 minute ago, Raskolnikov said:

You could try Netflix with a VPN, Avatar is on Netflix Canada.

Really? I had Netflix at one point. it had the same problem as hulu; not uploading content.

Wonder why it would be on Netflix Canada but not US.

Either way wouldn't a VPN not mix too well with a video stream?

  11. I want to get digital downloads for TV series, Cartoons mainly because I'm ultimately a kid at heart.

Before I go forward here, I don't want illegal downloads: They aren't good quality, they can be complicated to obtain, and mainly I actually do enjoy the shows I want to buy and want to support the creators.

I currently have Hulu as my only source of TV. They are terrible at uploading the latest content.

    Im looking for

-Avatar the last airbender (one of my all time favorites)

-The Legend of Korra (seen some, like it)

    -Steven Universe

    -Adventure time

I've looked for the individual shows on the internet but its actually surprisingly difficult to find whole seasons for sale in 1080p that aren't on DVDs or Blurays

    What do you guys think?

  12. Hello,

I want to upgrade my system to 32GB of ram for caching as well as just necessity.

    I currently have this kit

    https://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Vengeance-3000MHz-Desktop-Memory/dp/B014JESKRW/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1547488679&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=corsair%2Bvengeance%2Blpx%2B16gb%2Bddr4&dpPl=1&dpID=41AGvSmY-fL&ref=plSrch&th=1&psc=1

If I purchase a second one of these, what is the chances of these working well together?

Will I be able to run all 4 of these stickss at their rated 3000mhz speed when paired with a Ryzen 7 1700?

    Thanks for your time

  13. I'm looking for a new hobby.

I like to build and upgrade things to make them faster and perform better.

I'm already into PCs, cars, blacksmithing, audio, and electronics.

-My PC is already about as good as I need it to be. Any more upgrades will start to see diminishing returns.

-My car is in the shop now. Once I pay off the mechanics, I'll likely just leave it alone due to the $3000 cost of the repairs.

-Blacksmithing requires a significant amount of time. That being said the place where I have it right now will not be available to me by the end of this year and ill have put all of that stuff into storage.

-Audio has the same issue as my pc

-Electronics require a need/want to change something and I'm happy with all of my electronics now.

I've thought about getting into 3D printing, but I am a bit put off by having to calibrate the machine before each use and having it take multiple hours to complete a small print. Plus the initial startup funds are a bit steep.

Wood working and metal working are both things that I am mildly interested in and already do but as I mentioned earlier I will be losing my workspace here soon.

    What do you think?

What hobbies do you have that you work towards to improve in some way?

There's network way to do this, but it can be difficult with all port settings and such. I'll try to remember to search Level1 guide on that if I remember.

Easy way would be to capture one PC on it and other with capture card, both voice lines with Discord etc. That's one capture card and bit beefier main system.

That's actually not a bad idea. I could run it all in a VM on my ryzen 7 1700.

The issue is that I still have to purchase 1 capture card.

Still though, we're on the right track

  15. My girlfriend and I want to start streaming for fun.

We want viewers to be able to see both of our point of views at the same time, as well as hear audio from both PCs at once.

We would then have just one mic as we are on the a same network in the same room.

once everything is said and done I am imagining it would look like a split-screen game from something like a console style game.

My issue is that I don't know how to do this with software and we cannot afford capture cards for both computers.

I have a spare PC with an old core i7 in it that I want to send both video streams to.

From this computer I would then stream to the internet.

I have tried to use VLC to stream but cant seem to get that working at all.

How would we go about setting this up?

Excellent point. If it's in warranty, don't open it. Just blow it out with compressed air.

The seller said that they never registered it so it very likely still has a warranty. It's definitely worth looking into. I'll have to check tomorrow.

If the warranty is not valid I'd like to see if an aftermarket air cooler would fit.

Even if the PCB isn't reference (I actually don't know if it is or isn't)

I've also contemplated using a CPU cooler and modfiying it to fit. That's a bit of a stretch though.

Does running all fans at 100% help at all?

It does slow the eventual heating to 75. But it's also loud as hell.

    3 hours ago, aisle9 said:

Have you opened it up to clean out any gunk and replace the thermal paste? I'd be surprised if that was the issue on a card that new, but you never know.

I didn't try that. I was going to attempt to perserve the void sticker if possible but I haven't tried it

unless the software can increase the fans enough to lower the temps without deafening noise, i'd look to a watercooling solution:

nzxt g12 and corsair h50 AIO:

    https://www.nzxt.com/product-overview/kraken-g12

Yea I've considered that. I'm just terrified of water cooling.

My thought process is if there were to be a leak, I wouldn't be able to afford to replace the hardware thast was damaged.

Plus I would still want to have the RAM chips and VRMs to be cooled

    1 hour ago, chckovsky said:

    1. Custom fan curve on GPU. (afterburner or similar)

    2. Custom fan curve on intake and exhaust fans. (bios)

    Did that already...

That didn't seem to help too much

  19. Hey everyone.

I just purchased a PNY GTX 1070Ti  (dual fan) secondhand from ebay.

The seller did not use it in mining and they did not have any other cards for sale.

I love this card but it runs really hot. It will hit thermal limit (83C) after some time in Destiny 2

Doing some research I found that this particular card is just a hot one.

It seems to be more of a design flaw than usage thing.

That being said I don't think there is anything physically wrong with it.

Id like to find some creative ways to increase cooling performance.

Right now I have set a blower style fan on the end of the card and that actually did help by a couple degrees.

I've looked into aftermarket coolers but I believe I need a reference design for that to work.

What do you think? Whats a creative way to cool off a graphics card?

p.s. The case is a Corsair Carbide Air 540, so airflow is not a problem here.
