Wow, everyone here is just awesome!  Thank you so much for all the recommendations.  I told my son after school today that we had the basic system configuration and we are about to start ordering parts (probably still going to make that trip to Virginia just for fun).  It would be an understatement to say he is excited.  I have bumped up the budget a bit to make RGB a little easier.  I will definitely be taking pictures as he builds and post the finished product giving credit where credit is due, you all!

Thank you again, I appreciate it and hope over time I can return the favor to others.

That's what I would really do and then add a 1TB HDD later on for more storage. If you get an SSD right off the bat there will be no headache of reinstalling windows and it will also teach him how to manage storage, becasue of how much faster and better games run generally on a SSD vs a HDD. I think the 6gb 1060 is the best card for 1080p gaming, but you can get away with a 3gb version or a 1050ti no problem. Also, CPU wise I think a higher clocked quadcore is much more worth it than a lower clocked 6 core cpu, even more so because the 1300X is cheaper.

Also, it might be worth it to spend a little extra on the case just so it looks cool and is easier to build in. Maybe even get a full ATX motherboard for the looks too. Like the stick of memory I have selected is very ugly to save a few bucks, you can change and spend a lot in the name of aesthetics. Other than that, https://pcpartpicker.com/builds/ have a look at all the crazy things people are building everyday and I hope y'all don't get too a addicted to doing research

This is a really good build. If you can get everything for those prices then I don't think you can beat it.

Thanks so much!  Fairfax is about 6 hours from us (we are close to Charlotte), but that might be a fun weekend trip for he and I.  Always looking for opportunities to connect with the kid and increase his interest.
