  1. Currently the 16TB Exo Seagate drives are on Sale.. https://www.newegg.ca/seagate-exos-x16-st16000nm001g-16tb/p/1Z4-002P-015K6?Item=1Z4-002P-015K6

    Thoughts?

Also I am looking at replacing my case, I dont want it any larger than the Antec 900 but more drive bays would be good (currently I dont have any way to mount them, so I only have room for two currently). the Meshify Looks reasonable for drive and airflow... thoughts?

first things first, i'd start with TrueNAS, saving on the license cost for unraid gets you a tad more budget for the rest of the bits.

past that, the ideal HDD size sort of depends on how much storage you plan on needing.

i'm still on 3TB drives because i honestly dont even need that much, but on a pure price per GB aspect going 4TB drives makes more sense.

as for the RPM.. tbh it makes more sense to ignore that and just rely on SSD's for the stuff that actually needs fast I/O.

Will the 250gb cache handle that then? or are you talking about seperate SSDs.

Also the one time cost for unraid is insignificant and can be counted outside the budget. More looking for advice on which specific drives to get. 4 or 6tb will work - my needs are not specific and can always expand in future.

  3. Hi,

I am starting my first home server for Plex/general file storage, and maybe a small game server (Valheim/minecraft etc for me + a few friends if it can handle it). I am planning on running Unraid. Specs below:

    I5 - 4670k @3.4, 16gb Ram @3400mhz, Nvidia 770

Current Drives - two 250gb Samsung EVO SSDs

I am wondering, what hard drives should I use? I am looking at 4 4 or 6 TB hard drives but I am looking for what is the best bang for buck, or if I should consider something else. This would allow for the two ssds to act as cache, 3 storage HDs and 1 for parity.

I was looking into the WD Red or Seagate Ironwolf, does it make a big difference for the 5400rpm/7200rpm?

Budget is sub 1k, more looking for thoughts. Also my case is the Antec 900 (I know, its an oldie - but its what I have laying around), does anyone know how I get more drive cages for these in 2023? I have room for the four drives but not a way to attach to the case since it was gutted.

I haven't done any of this before so please let me know of any recommendations.

    Thanks

    Edit ** 250gb not 512gb SSD**

That does say it's 2.0, but I interestingly it specifically says it only supports 1440p at 120hz, which is both lower than spec and higher than what you're getting.

It doesn't say it's certified, and it surely would if it was. That doesn't necessarily mean anything as not every manufacturer bothers to get certified because it costs to do so, and you have to maintain a level of quality control that may not always be tenable for companies trying to sell cheap cables. There's no guarantees you're going to get 100% to spec capabilities without certification, though.

In other words 1440p at 100hz may just be the max capabilities of this particular cable. You might get better or worse from an exact duplicate. If you need to hit the spec, you may need to seek out a certified cable, but it's probably going to be more expensive.

Edit: I take that back. There's more than a few on Amazon that say they're certified (assuming they're not lying) that are around $15. I also completely didn't think about getting a 2.1 cable. It's going to be more in the $25-30 range for one of those, but even with variance, it should then at least be able to handle 1440p at 144hz.

Sounds good - i'll try a different cable. Not a big deal since most games wont run at 144hz at 1440p on this machine either way so im not overly worried if im stuck at 100hz and i just wanted a sanity check, I am overbuying the monitor a bit as they last a long time, and i have a similar one already so i know what im getting without having to do much research.

    Thanks!

You should be able to do 1440p at 144hz over HDMI, as long as it's HDMi 2.0 on both sides, which I'm pretty sure is the case. It might be a cable issue. Try a cable that's specifically rated for HDMI 2.0 or higher.

https://www.amazon.com/Syncwire-HDMI-Cable-6-5-2-0/dp/B071WBWGBT is the cable im pretty sure I'm using... really not sure since this should support it?

  6. Hey all,

I was wonder if my Razer Blade 15 (specs in title) will run my lg 27gl850b at 144hz? I have that monitor for my main pc. however i am looking to get a second (more likely the lower spec 27 inch 144hz, 1440p that LG has) at my parents place as I work from home for a bit.

Currently, its only letting me push the gl850 at 100hz via HDMI, is there a reason for this? I am unable to find any limitations showing it shouldnt run it at 144hz. The manual for the monitor states I can run it at 144hz via hdmi?

    Thanks

Im guessing the cannon camera has just a audio jack input
Most lav microphones wont have cables long enough to stretch from a person all the way to a camera. Most are designed to either go into a pocket recorder or a wireless transmitter.

Most are around £50 mark for entry level lapel microphones. The price to performance cap is around 100 to 150 mark. Once you go over that you spending a lot of money for little gain in quality.

    Low price
    Shure Motiv MVL/A
    Rode SmartLav+
    Rode Lavalier GO

    High price
    AudioTechnica AM3
    Sennheiser ME4
    Sennheiser ME 2

I bought the BOYA by M1 Lavalier Microphone for $26 CAD, however if this sucks because its so cheap (the reviews ive seen were pretty good tho so il try it),  I have $230 left in my budget

  8. Hey all,

I am looking into starting a youtube channel for talking about personal finance. I am looking at potential affordable starter audio options for this, and was looking for a cheaper/ yet still decent quality lavalier mic. Does anyone have any recommendations, or should I use a different type of mic (such as Shotgun). I am planning on using a Canon Camera.

Why not? If you have the processing power. People on 1080p can just select 1080p. Plus rendering down 4k to 1080p makes a sharper video vs a native 1080p shot. You'll have more creative option like zooming, panning & cropping 2x without loosing pixels on 1080p.

It's arguably a popular option. Yeah BOYA it's pretty good for less money.

I was looking for a reasonable lavalier mic, but thats a different discussion. I have a good PC that would be able to edit in 4k and was thinking the same thing relating to the creative options. Might be out of my price range right now tho

Based on the videos they want to do it doesn’t sound like it’ll be more than a fixed camera all the way through and YT compression kills any benefit you’d get. Overall 4K just wastes disk space and increases upload times.

Sounds good, 4k was just a suggestion (depending on price point :)

  11. Hi!

Sorry if there has been a post already about this, but i am looking for recommendations for starter youtuber cameras (I would like to start filming personal finance videos). In addition, if possible I would also like something that I could use for Nature pics or general photography (if thats an option for both, im not 100% educated on camera body vs lens).

Are there reasonable 4k camera options, or is it better to start w 1080p to begin with?

    Thanks!

If he only does the usual PC and/or gaming stuff then a good air cooler like most Cooler Masters and Deepcools will do. If he is a defined disciple of K1NGPIN or any other notable overclocker then a great AIO like most of the Corsair or Cooler Master AIO offerings will suffice.

ADD: Damn CyberPower's quotation is hard af to read

Sounds good, yea i know its a pain man.. their website is even worse

Looks good but 32gb is not needed but you know "If you have the money get it" also that mobo WiFi isn't needed just get the one without WiFi and get a pci network adapter

Yeah; we wanted 32gb and wifi, so the board is easier to deal with than having an add in card if i need to help him troubleshoot tbh

I suggest to your friend that he must build a PC to maximize that massive budget.

Should he will be insisting on a pre-built, I suggest checking out OriginPC or Digital Storm. At least it is something that is customized from the factory.

Yeah im trying to get him to build a PC.. just he wants to see the prebuilt options, and OriginPC was hella expensive
