  1. I ignored it. :-\ When it asked me to turn off secure boot, I said no... and then X wouldn't load at all. :-/ Oddly, before the nvidia install, the boot loading screen where the output scrolls by was a nice compressed font, then after the nvidia install, it was a bloated stretched-out font (but it also didn't properly install since I didn't agree to turn secure boot off). I have no idea why or how that would impact it, the message on the page that asked me said that 3rd parties won't or may not work if I leave uefi secure boot on. Edit - if I can turn secure boot off, and both systems still work, that's fine.
  2. I did this: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa sudo apt update sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends nvidia-367 reboot sudo apt-get install xorg fluxbox it was during the nvidia install process that it asked me to turn off UEFI Secure Boot.
  3. https://pcpartpicker.com/user/KCmetro/saved/R3wcf7 + logitech k200 keyboard & mouse ubuntu server 16.10 swapping distro's not really an option, and being ubuntu it really should work, but being a bare-bone installation maybe not, so I'm looking for what needs installed.
  4. I figured the video card driver would fix the issue with the mouse pointer (stuck in corner, but mouse still works). Maybe I don't have to install the video card driver, everything else about the linux side works fine. it's just the mouse pointer issue. Is there a mouse driver I can try instead or in addition? It's just a generic mouse (a cheap one from Logitech).
  5. I'm running Windows 10 Pro on an M2 SSD and Linux (Ubuntu Server) on a SATA SSD. Both work fine with one exception, when I load a basic window manager (fluxbox) in Linux, there's a bug with the mouse and mouse cursor. I tried installing the driver for the video card, but it is asking that I turn UEFI Secure Boot off or it may not work. I said no because there were issues getting everything recognized. Will I still be able to boot into Windows if I turn secure boot off? I need to get that mouse working right on the Linux side of things.
  6. Thank you, I'll give that a try. Thank you too, I'll also give that a try.

    ouch okay well, there's that

    RX 490

If they release it before January 15th, I'll get it. If not, then I'll keep my gtx 1070. I'm considering returning the 1070 within the return-by date (it's new) and replacing it with the AMD equivalent, so I can get a better priced gaming monitor. Otherwise, I might bite the bullet and get the overpriced nvidia-based monitor. Really hoping AMD releases the GPU soon!

    RX 490

Any word on release date? Will it be the equivalent to the gtx 1070 and/or 1080? What can we predict or expect the price range to be on it?
  10. At present I'm going to use ubuntu server, with plans on getting the configs for the IaaS setup saved for easy rebuilds in future, and at some point I might swap out the base os from ubuntu server to something else. The systems that I'll run on it will basically be rhel (oracle linux). The only exception will be a full vm for use as a personal desktop, I might run slackware on that. Anyway, the mouse stuff.... I can experiment with nvidia drivers, I'm not sure yet if I'll swap GPU out for an amd, but if I do it'll be a couple/few weeks away, so might as well test things out with the current card. I'll see what the ubuntu server's equivalent to xf86-input-driver might be, but I think the nvidia driver(s) available through their site match that description. Yep, ppa seems to be the right way to go. I just don't want all the junk installed that would qualify as a full DE. I only want the WM essentials. Good idea about the Arch wiki, I'll check it out. Thanks! Edit - This might be closer to what I'm looking for: sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends ubuntu-desktop Only problem with that is it's still the wrong GUI. I just want to do sudo apt-get install fluxbox and be done.
  11. I'm putting nvidia driver troubleshooting on hold, possibly stopping entirely pending the result of what I find for a different GPU. I realized AMD has a better deal for what I'm looking for, so I'll probably have to do the troubleshooting with that one's drivers if there ends up being an issue with that.
  12. It's funny that you go through the trouble to analyze and dissect what I said. I'm not even going to bother reading it. It's not that big of a deal. The pre-release version of the game is great, I'm sure that it'll be great when it is officially released. I will say this, again: I'm reflecting on discussions from others; I am optimistic, while also being realistic; I will remain hopeful that SC will end up being a huge success. I suggest that you move on, ignore this thread or even ignore me if you wish.
  13. That should do it, only I want to make sure it doesn't install the complete desktop environment GUI. Also don't want it to auto-load that GUI (or any GUI) at boot. I wonder if the xserver-xorg is what ended up installing it, or if it was automatically part of installing the nvidia driver. I tested it on a lab system, a VM, and ended up with those results. That's correct, but the ubuntu server did end up having a GUI and it auto-loaded it at boot after I installed xorg and xserver-xorg; possibly after nvidia driver. It was either the 1st 2 or all 3 that resulted in the unwanted GUI. I'll have to try again to see, or just look up what each one does or what specifically they install. I want the GUI features, just the fluxbox component, I don't want to just install a bunch of stuff, only want the lightweight fluxbox with a working mouse. I can then use a normal workstation GUI with a VM that I occasionally run inside the server for personal computer type stuff. The rest of the time ubuntu server will run on its own, unattended, like when I'm not around, and I can remote connect into it, actually connect to the IaaS that's running on it, from a laptop. Basically, the server component of the computer will be headless. Figuratively. Regarding running VMs, I probably won't use vSphere, going to look into going the lxc/lxd route. I haven't considered a GUI-based hypervisor like vSphere apps for any VMs or containers, the systems that I'll run will all (or almost all) be strictly command line. I'll still use some GUI stuff, some of the time. I'm going to use a combination of system management resources with about 9 to 12 instances each running as their own (hopefully lightweight) systems. I'll have to adjust things based on the actual apps running on them. Some might be complete VMs, while others just containers. Might use kvm to manage them. I'm not sure what you mean about the programs I installed really needing the GUI. I installed xorg/fluxbox/etc. for the exact purpose of having a GUI but not for the purpose of using it all the time, only to have the minimum required framework to use fluxbox when I decide to use more than the command line. In any case, the mouse, I'm going to give this a try: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-input-mouse/1:1.7.1-1build3 Actually, I'm going to install the nvidia driver, see if that does the trick, then will try the other stuff if still no luck.
  14. That's a nice monitor! I love the prices on a lot of large monitors. I'm looking for one that has the specs that would normally crank up the price, but am hoping to find one that has those specs but of course at a lower price. 1440p, 100Hz+, IPS, 27"+, etc. ideal for gaming.
