  1. Thanks guys, you solved it! The noise stopped when I lifted the case, so it is definitely vibrations caused by moving parts. As I had already tested the HDD and video card, I unplugged each of my fans (including CPU fan) until the noise stopped. It turns out my 200mm fan at the front of my case is to blame. I took the fan off the case and plugged it in whilst holding it and it was almost silent. As the fan itself makes very little noise and the airflow is great, I do not want to replace it. So, can any of you recommend a way to dampen the fan vibrations?
  2. My PC makes this strange low-pitch throbbing hum whenever it's on. It is always there from when I turn it on to the moment I turn it off. I have no idea where this noise is coming from, so if anyone could help me find the source, that would be amazing. I suppose the notable (noise-causing) parts of my computer are: Cooler Master Hyper TX3 Evo cooler I am aware of the 212 Evo, my last build had space constraints. ThermalTake Core V21 case (with motherboard horizontal) 200mm front intake fan that came with the case Gigabyte GTX 1050 OC video card Standard Arctic F12 120mm exhaust fan at the back of the case Single mechanical hard drive Novatech 500W semi-modular PSU Here are some of my observations: The throbs sometimes change in frequency (sometimes there is one throb a second, sometimes there are multiple a second). The changes in frequency appear to have a correlation with my CPU temperature, the throbs get more frequent when my CPU temperature increases. From this I assume it has something to do with my fans, but I don't know how because I have never heard a computer fan make this type of noise. The noise has no relation to my GPU fans, I have turned my GPU fans off and I can still hear the noise. The noise is not coil whine, I know what coil whine sounds like and it is nothing like it. I have a single mechanical drive, but I disconnected them and the noise still remained. The PC is on a hard wood floor and I can hear the noise very clearly when I put my ear to the floor near the computer. I can also hear the noise in the room below! I don't have a microphone that is able to capture the noise accurately, so I used a sound synthesizer to generate a sample that is very similar to the noise: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uv3VDKOZwz4 The sample I generated kinda makes it sound like low-pitched wind, but in real life it sounds nothing like the movement of air. Again, if anyone has any idea as to what this could be, I would be very grateful.
  3. Hi, I tried all of what you said and the problem still persists. I have ordered an SSD so I can replace the hard drive and reinstall Windows because I really need this computer for work and I think a complete reinstall on a new drive will probably fix my issue. Thank you so much for your responses and I will post in this thread again if the reinstall doesn't fix it.

Hi, I have had this laptop for over a year and in the past few days it has started to do this strange thing where I will try to shut it down and it will be half-on for a while and then turn on again. Also, when I put the laptop to sleep it does the half-on thing for a bit and then fully shuts down and doesn't keep any of my applications. During the half-on state the screen is completely off (no backlight) but the fans and power LEDs are all fully on. It appears that this problem only happens in Windows because I tested using Ubuntu on a USB drive and the computer shuts down normally. I have messed around in the 'Power' section of the control panel to try to fix the problem but nothing seems to affect it. I believe some Windows update messed it up because I do remember getting one quite recently. The computer is a Lenovo E540, bought new from the official Lenovo website, 7200RPM HDD with plenty of space remaining, perfectly healthy battery, i7, 8GB RAM, Windows 10 This problem is really annoying because putting the laptop to sleep (closing the lid or choosing the option in the start menu) renders it inoperable for an annoyingly long amount of time and I lose all my work. It also can't be shut down from the option in the start menu because it just starts itself up again without me doing anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated
  5. I am a bit of a newbie with CPUs, so please forgive me if I am misinformed. Say I had two Intel CPUs, both the same architecture, both the same TDP, one is an i7 and the other an i3. If they are both idling on the desktop, will the i7 have lower temps? Also, will the i7 be hotter under full load? Thanks.
  6. Say I had a 2 port USB 3.1 hub connected to the PC and I only connected one thing to it. I understand that the bandwidth is shared between the two ports, but will the one port still operate at half speed even if it is the only thing connected? Also, what if two things were connected but only one is actually transferring data? What will happen to the speed then? Thanks.
  7. It's to do with the encryption that console makers put in, and the power required to fully emulate a completely different, very powerful, processor. The PC would need to be magnitudes more powerful than a PS4 and that it totally out of reach for most people.
  8. I have always been loyal to Firefox, but the fact that it gets so damn slow after a while makes me realise why so many people are switching to Chrome. I have a very high spec PC that should be more than capable of running a web browser (6700k, 16GB DDR4, SSD etc). Granted, I am quite a power user; I generally have multiple windows open across multiple desktops with multiple tabs in each, but I still believe that it should be able to utilise my CPU and perform seamlessly. I have done the same with Chrome and it seemed to manage. I have refreshed Firefox, uninstalled all my addons, updated, reinstalled the program entirely, but none of these seem to help the fact that Firefox desperately underutilises my PC and leaks memory until it crashes. I agree with everything Mozilla stands for and I love Firefox as a browser, but lately, Chrome has been outperforming it in every way. Why does Firefox eventually slow down to the point of being unusable after a while? Why do intensive web apps in one window influence light browsing in a separate window? Why does it leak so much memory? Why weren't these fundamental issues fixed long ago? Is there any way to prevent this happening so I don't have to switch to Chrome? Thanks.
