  1. Currently using a Xeon E5-2690 in an asus p9x79 to run a freenas server. When I configured the machine initially I didn't realize that a number of the plugins and applications I wanted to use were single threaded and the single core performance of the 2690 is a bit lacking. I want to upgrade the CPU, I'm looking for the CPU that has the highest single core performance with 16 threads that is supported by my mobo. As far as I can tell that should be the Xeon E5-2687W v2. Is there another CPU that would work in this use case that I am missing? Does anyone have any experience with this CPU?
  2. I am looking for recommendations on how to improve my home NAS setup. I initially set it up using the limited knowledge I have of network storage, but I have a feeling there is a more optimal way to have it configured. This is the hardware I have right now : - 5 mismatched 1TB consumer-grade hard drives - ASUS P9X79 mobo - Xeon E5-2690 -16gb RAM -120gb SATA boot SSD The system is running windows 10 home. I am using Microsoft storage spaces to pool the drives. Drives are in a "three-way mirror" configuration which allows for 2 drive failures without any data loss, I chose this because of my less than ideal drive selection and therefore higher chance of drive failure. This setup gives me a total usable capacity of 1.5TB. It does about 85MB/s read and 80MB/s write (will include disk benchmark results below). I am looking for any suggestions on how to improve this setup, mostly software/configuration wise. I had considered using unraid at one point but never ended up doing it, maybe that's a good option. I don't really want to spend a ton more money on hardware, this is meant to be a very budget build, but I'm not opposed to buying a raid card on eBay for example. I also have a 500gb SATA SSD that I wanted to use to accelerate the spinning disks but when I built the server I couldn't figure out how to do that in conjunction with storage spaces and I haven't spent the time to figure it out yet. Please let me know if you have any suggestions on how to make this server better whether it be faster speeds, better redundancy, more usable capacity, or something else.
  3. I just got a new laptop and I proceeded to freshly install windows 10 on it because I don't want all the bloatwear that manufacturers include. I completed the windows install. Logged into the system and went straight to updates. I proceeded to install all of the available updates which had me restart a few times. After the final restart I went back to windows update to make sure there were no more updates available, and I got the message that it couldn't not connect to windows update. This was the first indication that there was a problem. I am able to search Google, watch YouTube videos and even download programs. But any process within an application that accesses the internet fails. For example, logging into GeForce experience fails, windows update can't connect, smart screen in edge fails, logging into Gmail in any browser fails, and activating my license key in malware bytes fails. Does anyone know what could be causing this? Any help at all is greatly appreciated. To me it seems like some sort of authentication/security/firewall issue. Thanks
  4. I just picked up a 128GB ssd to act as an SSD cache for my NAS. When I try to install Intel Rapid Storage Technology it fails and says that "This Platform is not supported" The system is a 4670k running in an MSI z97 Mpower board so Intel RST should work with it. Does anyone have any ideas for what could be causing the download to fail? Is there a bios setting that I need to Enable/Disable to allow Intel RST to work?
  5. I was planning on using SFP+ because it seems like the cards are cheaper. Can I use a cheap cable like this https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F202341956560 or do I need a more expensive cable.
  6. I want to set up 10g networking between my main desktop PC and my local file server. I've been told that 10g networking gear can be had very cheaply on eBay. I have done some searching on ebay and found some 10g nics that are pretty cheap. The issue is that I have no way of knowing that specific model of nic is any good. I'm looking for any recommendations on which eBay 10g nics are the best. Thanks
  7. It is not an issue with the 5ghz network not being available. The 5ghz network is fully functioning on every other device in my house. This includes Windows PCs, Apple laptops, iPhones, Android tablets, and a raspberry pi.
  8. Where would I change the setting for the card?
  9. My internet speed is 500/500. I have a 5ghz network coming from my access point. I've put the laptop right next to the access point and the network does not show up.
  10. My laptop which is a Dell Inspiron 7537. It has an Intel Dual Band Wireless-N 7260 Wifi/ Bluetooth card in it. According to Intel's specification, the card supports 2.4 and 5ghz wifi but for some reason, my laptop can not find any 5ghz networks. I have clean installed windows in the past so there isn't any Dell software on it that could be locking down the wifi card. My best guess right now is that Dell has somehow locked down the 5ghz in the bios somehow. If anyone has any other ideas for why the 5ghz is not working please let me know, it is much appreciated.
  11. my laptops Wi-Fi card does not have AC Wi-Fi. It used the standard laptop pcie slot to connect the Wi-Fi card. Could I buy a new Wi-Fi card and connect it to the existing antenna and have it work.
  12. If it was my own system thats what I would do but this my mother system that she uses to run her business and she has everything configured very specifically for her use case and it would take me ages to set it all back up
  13. I recently bought a 512gb SSD for my mother's workstation system because her current OS drive is only 125gb and is almost full. I have done disk cloning and OS migration many times in the past but I haven't found a software that I super pleased with. Please let me know what your recommended os migration software is. Thanks
  14. Anyone know what the official max cpu tdp the all the asetech 240mm aios can do. The cooler I have specifically is the Kraken x52 but I assume that the tdp is the same for all asetech units
