  1. Now i understand what you mean, but we are dealing with projects that can go up to 1 tb of footage, i dont have space to move all the footage to my ssd drive, (C:)
  2. Dont think i understend exactly what you said. I have all my video files i'm working on conected via usb 3.0, not the greatest thing, i know, but for now we cant afford a server, since we are multiple editors working on diffrent PC's. so using the files from the usb drive, i think the scratch files are made on the internal ssd. is this the correct way or not?
  3. Then it's clear i need a new video card, but would a CPU upgrade make any diffrence in the editing performance, preview or render?
  4. I am doing 1080p editing, multicam, 2 hour video exports, and I'm not very pleased with the performance. I have an i7-4790 cpu with an R7 370 video card, 32 GB RAM, and SSD. My question is, do I need to upgrade the video card? I would go for GTX 1060 or 1070 Or should i invest in a new CPU, motherboard if needed? Thanks.
  5. thats ok... thanks a lot, i will continue investigating
  6. so I have an idea I want to build an adapter in order to be able to replace my cd drive from my macbook pro with an hdd I know caddys are cheap, but I like playng arround, and since I have acces to a solder i was thinking to build an adapter myself. The question is that i dont know how caddys work, i asume that they are just passive adapters with no electronics, but I want to make sure that there is no neet for any electronics in order to connect my hdd via cdrom port, Thanks
  7. That is really helpfull, thakn you a lot @Vitalius to point out, im not looking to transfer big amount of data, just to ramdomly acces data needed to edit a project, should not use the drives's full bandwith I have one last question, if i make an investment, get a pc with this only purpose, it will have 6 usb3.0, im thinking to use usb3.0 hubs, to double the amount, so 1 hub for each usb3.0, i will get a total of 12 drives plugged at the same time. i will make sure that my network doesnt bottleneck that 1gigabit speed, it should work, right? i will probably work, lets say, on like 3 projects at the same time, 2 from the same drive and one from another drive, when i work at a project i see the drive is being used at 20-50%. assuming that, in theory it sould not affect the editing procces, right? and if i buy this pc, sould it be any pc, or do i need more performance? i was thinking on 4gb ram intel celeron. kind of the cheapest thing i can build with a motherboard with 6 usb 3.0. Thank you
  8. To be more precise. I need the drive to be mobile, when i have an event, i take it and store 1080p media, come back at the office and edit the project, but the same drive may contain another project that needs some edits fast. the idea is to be able to use the drives that alredy exist, and acces them from 3-4 pc's without connecting and disconnecting all day. we have some budget to invest, like to buy a pc for freeNAS, but not to buy a server, at least for now about sharing in windows, we use windows 10, and when i try this, on the other pc's i get a permision error, even if i change settings, following youtube tutorials, cant make it work, and if it works, what speed should i expect to see? And would it work better on windows 7 or something like that? @Vitalius the idea is good, and for the near future we will upgrade toward that build, but for now we own the 15 or so usb external drives, and we would prefer not to tear them apart. So my best option is trying that windows share, we could buy a pc to stay up all the time not being used, to do this. Or to buy a computer to install freeNAS using usb drives, for now. If i get this right. Which would give the faster data transfer speed? Thank you @Vitalius and @TapfererToaster for your replys
  9. I am looking for a solution to improve the workflow of my company. We are a small buissnes. We record weddings and events, and after we edit the projects at the office. The problem is that we use 15 USB 3.0 2tb external hard drives for all our media. The speed is ok but is frustrating when 2 people need to work on diffrent pc's and tiffrent projects but they are on the same drive. I want to be able to connect multiple drives via USB to multiple pc's at the same time, keeping the transfer speed acceptable to work on our projects, and the costs as low as possible, as right now we can't invest to much in this area. My solutions so far were to find a usb to network adapter, but I can't find something that suits me. My second solution I was thinking was using a pc only for this job, install freeNAS software and connect all the drives to this pc. This is probably the best way I can think of, but I don't know if it will work and what speed will I get using this method. I would appreciate any other solutions to this problem. Thank you.
