  1. It is most certainly a first for me. Maybe this speaks to the reliability of trains in general?
  2. This has to be the most casual notification of a train derailment I have ever received.
  3. Try uninstalling the driver with DDU and reinstalling. If that doesn't work it may be a bad Windows install. Could always try a live Linux distro to rule that out. If you're still having issues it's a hardware problem whether you want to hear it or not. These things happen.
  4. Maybe I'm a little biased but this makes me sad. These things go for 3-8k. I'd think it could be fixed for less than that. P.S. Star Wars < Star Trek
  5. You clearly don't understand what goes into rendering a single frame of graphics in a video game. When Quake released in 1996 it could render up to 200 polygons per frame. In 2006 Quake 4 was using 2,600 polygons for each character model. A year later Unreal Tournament 3 had over 12,000 polygons in just the gun model seen in the first person view. We can now render pretty much as many polygons as we want. Epic is claiming they can render billions of polygons with little difficulty. But all of that leaves out other advancements and what's really holding back graphics development. Things like lighting, shaders, surface textures and physics. And we're doing all of that in real time with ever increasing resolutions. Yes, we can render realistic life-like frames. But doing so in real time is still a ways off. The real trouble we're going to have in the near term is avoiding the uncanny valley. I think a lot of production avoids life-like graphics simply to not have to deal with that. Just watch Polar Express or Alita: Battle Angel. So close yet almost too disturbing to watch. I have no doubt that we'll get there eventually. Just try to understand how daunting a task this really is.
  6. Well you also have to remember we were mostly playing at 800x600 or 1024x768 in the early 00's. Now we're playing games at 4k. That's more than 10 times the number of pixels. I think it's amazing we've improved polygon rendering as much as we have considering the sheer increase in pixel pushing.
  7. Ahh, we're posting netbooks now? What terrible little computers those were. Might as well show off mine. I have this HP Mini sitting around. Upgraded to 2Gb RAM and a 128Gb SSD I had lying around. With Bhodi Linux it actually runs pretty good. The keyboard and touchpad are still almost unusable though. The batteries even still hold a charge.
  8. Well it took some doing but the Imsai 8080 now works with my TeleVideo terminal. I even have it connected to a BBS through telnet! Was even able to hack into the school's computer and change my girlfriend's biology grade. Now if only I can find the number to that game developer so I can try their new game...
  9. I didn't soak it but IPA and a soft brush took care of it. I also pulled all the socketed chips and hit the sockets with contact cleaner. I had to be very careful because there are a lot of bodge wires on the board. I wish I could clean the keyboard this thoroughly. I'd have to desolder all of the key switches to get to the topside of the PCB. I already removed the two bad switches and I'd rather not do that for the whole batch.
  10. I just picked up a TeleVideo 925 Terminal. This thing was very nasty. I was able to get apart and cleaned. Tested voltages and it powered up seemingly with no problems. Couldn't get the keyboard to respond initially. I found two bad key switched that were dead short. After pulling the bad switches I was able to pull up the setup menu and display test characters. Now I'm waiting on replacement switches and a serial cable so I can attempt to connect to my Imsai 8080 clone. Setup display. Test Characters Bad Switch, took awhile to find replacements. Very nasty inside. Sticks like oily graphite.
  11. I'd love to have a model of the WOPR. https://www.gadgetify.com/wargames-wopr-pc-case-mod/
  12. The switches weren't bad at all. The worst was the micro sd card reader (surface mount) and the anchors for the serial ports took a lot of heat.
  13. Just finished building this bit of kit over the weekend. Boots CP/M like a champ and I love the blinky lights. How about a nice game of chess?
  14. That's even older than the Tandy Coco 3 that I grew up with. I do miss those clowns and balloons though.
  15. Very nice. I don't have any old iron. I still kick myself for not picking it up when it was cheap. Not that I could afford to shoot it anymore than I do my current stuff.
  16. And cheap as chips too! The server originally had a single E5520. I picked up the X5675s for $21 each. Not the most power efficient these days but plenty of grunt. Considering none of my media is above 1080p they mostly sit idle. I need to figure out a few more things it can do for me since it's on 24/7 anyway.
  17. I have it running Plex right now through Unraid. 8 2TB HDDs (2 are parity) and 2 480 GB SSDs for cache.
  18. Is a ten year old Westmere server old enough? Dual Xeon X5675 with 72 GB ECC RAM
  19. OMG, I used to have this exact case. Although I painted gray flames on the side and hot glued a skull to the front vents. Even wired red leds for the eyes that blinked with hdd activity. I wish I still had that thing. The CPU cooler I had sounded like jet engine though. Oh the hours I spent playing Unreal Tournament 2004 on this thing.
  20. That's definitely a Hyperion. It was a Compaq clone that probably failed because it's not 100% IBM compatible. The red key is just a fake novelty keyboard key. I believe it says "Panic".
  21. I know ammo prices are up; but are we really reduced to mangling poor defenseless carrots now? What caliber carrot? .45 or thereabouts? I'll guess 12 cm. And now I really want to break out my Remington New Army. If only I could get black powder anywhere.
  22. I recently found another alternative at a random Goodwill. I figure it was a waste of $8 but might be fun to tinker with. Much to my surprise not only is the driver easy to find but was updated in 2020. Apparently it was a more popular device in Japan. I was even more surprised to find ribbons weren't too hard to find at Amazon Japan. The results are rather nice too!
  23. I actually prefer Xubuntu. It looks much nicer, still resource friendly and is easier to use.
