  1. So, I wanna OC my i5-6500. To do that I need an older bios for my gigabyte z170-hd3. It is locked down and won't let you flash it back that far. I have even booted to ms-dos and tried, no luck. Any way to force my mobo to flash back that far without a bios programmer?
  2. So I posted on this forum about this the other day, but I have a different problem. I have tried using Windows software, Q-Flash, and even AMI-DOS to try and flash my bios to an older version, and every time it says the bios is write protected. Is there any way to disable it? I can't find a way to disable it in Bios either. This was the original post: So as a backstory: I just bought borderlands 3, and this is the first game I've bought that my PC isn't powerful enough to run. I have an i5-6500, 12gb Ram, and a gtx 1070. I want to overclock my cpu so that I can get some more performance out of it. I don't know if it will actually help, but it's worth a try. Obviously you can't overclock non-K chips, but you can change the bclk. However, you can only do that on older bios versions, as Intel doesn't like you doing that. My motherboard is Gigabyte GA-Z170-HD3. I have the latest bios, but found out that version 6e was the last one that supports bclk overclocking. But when I go to the bios update utility and choose that file, it says "This motherboard is protected from using this bios". Is there a way to force my motherboard to have the older bios? TLDR: Is there a way to force my motherboard to have an old bios that it wouldn't otherwise let me have? Thanks!!
  3. No, that's where I got the file from. How do you use a bios programmer?
  4. Ah that's cool, but still same message, even using q-flash
  5. In Windows. I don't think there is one in my bios.

  7. I actually just bought a WD black sn750 ssd, and I'll be doing a clean install of Windows. I think that will help, since I'll have an ssd. Right now i'm using a 2tb sshd.
  8. Yeah, that's true. I'll probably order that one tonight then. I've been having network problems, so doing a clean install of Windows will hopefully fix it?. Thanks for your help!
  9. Ah, that's kinda what I figured. I saw this drive too:https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07J2WBKXF/ref=psdc_1292116011_t1_B07GBKQ9ST Is that bettter or worse somehow? It seems to be a lot faster, and only 7 dollars more.
  10. Yeah, that's a good point. Would the extra speed decrease boot times at all? And yeah, I got an sshd a couple years ago because I wasn't as wise, and thought it would be as fast as an ssd.
  11. Oh lol didn't see that. That doesn't look bad! It'll probably be between that or something smaller and faster though. I'll definitely consider that though
  12. That doesn't look bad $100 off on amazon, but I was looking more in the 50-75 dollar range. I found the XPG SX8200 Pro 256GB for $56 on amazon, and that seems to be the best deal so far. If you have any suggestions lmk!
  13. Cool, thanks a ton! Now I just have to not spend 3 months choosing the right ssd?
  14. Ok cool, that doesn't seem too bad. I can make steam find my game files on my other drive right? And can I install windows on the new drive if I have the physical installation usb?
  15. Ok. Most of it isn't necesarily super important, it's just really hard to get back. How do you reset permissions, and how do you delete windows off the old drive? And when I copy over programs like steam, do I have to do something special, or just drop them into the right folder in the new drive?
