  1. Hello all, I don't know if bumping topics work on this site, but I figured I'll try to post on this topic I've previously started instead of starting a brand new post, since it's basically asking a similar question. With the Radeon anti-Nvidia hype entering the tech news lately, I was wondering if the 6900xt/6800xt would fit on this same rig I have set up, specified on my initial post on this thread. My previous inquiry was resolved with regards to the 3080 and 3090 (3080 coming out on top for my preference/budget/rig), but now, after the Nvidia fiasco's come to pass, and the new rx6900/rx6800 hype train surfacing, I'm wondering if this line of video card will still be plug & play to my rig. I guess tl;dr, will my cpu/mobo/psu accomodate a 6800xt if I were to go this route instead of the nvidia 3080. Thanks and regards to all!
  2. Thanks for all the replies. As soon as I can get my hands on one it sounds like I'll be getting a 3080 since my current rig's mobo/psu can support the upgrade and I'm not even using a 4k display. RAM sounds appealing too since I have 2 extra slots and I suppose I could do a 4x8 at 3600mhz or something so maybe I'll do that.
  3. Ooh possibly. I currently have a 1tb 970 evo and a random older 7200rpm for junk. I haven't kept up with cpu's, since at the time I knew that my GPU was the weakest link of the build. Any recommendations for gaming CPU? Last I heard/read, for gaming, 8700k was a good price and performance point compared to the i9's. Has this changed?
  4. Ah yes the size was also one of the concerns. I'll bring it over to my local Fry's (since that's where they built the pc to begin with when I purchased the parts) and see if they have any suggestions for the size issue. But if the rest of the build works then great! I don't have to buy or replace any old parts just to accommodate a new card.
  5. and it would be sustained by my mobo and psu, yeah? It's my main concern for either of the cards. Thanks!
  6. should I just grab a couple sticks of the same exact RAM? pretty sure I have the slots available. Or do you have a recommendation?
  7. It def sounds like it, and the price point is reminiscent of the hype around the time 2080ti was a thing. I was 90% sold on the 3080, just wanted to make sure that my rig will allow me to plug and play (I have basic build skills but I've never built my own PC unsupervised by a pro). So, my rig can sustain a 3080 just fine? namely mobo and psu? Thanks
  8. Hello, casual gamer here. Quick question. With the hype of the new nvidia 3080 and 3090, I was thinking that it's finally time to upgrade my graphics card. (I'm in no rush, I'm sure within 6 months or so the stores and inventories should have stock for the cards) Here's my current set up. Will getting a 3080 or 3090 work with this? From my quick searches, it sounds like my mobo and PSU should be able to handle at least the 3080, I'm hoping I can just get the new video card and "plug & play." Asus TUF Z370 Plus G Silencer 1050w 80+ Platinum i7 8700K DDR4 16GB 3200MHz GTX980 (Lol, yeah it was a free video card) I'm pretty sure 3090 is definitely overkill (Then again, I think, so was the 2080ti when it came out, but I opted out at the time), but I can dish out the extra dough to ensure that my rig will be "viable" for a few years. I don't play any crazy high end games, I just like to get as high fps as I can with any games I play- and I'm only running 2k on a 27" 165hz monitor. Maybe upgrade to 4k within the next year. From what I've read and watched, 3080 (Even the 2080ti at the time) would be a huge upgrade for me. For reference, I'm currently playing around 50fps on medium high settings on a game like Three Kingdoms Total War. I wanna max out games on my system, whatever casual game it may be. Thanks!
  9. Yeah i watched Linus' spiel on TN, VA, IPS, I was leaning towards the IPS. Definitely 144-165hz 1440p though. I think I'll wait it out until sales next month and see if I can't land a good deal on both vidcard and monitor. Question just came up- Is there any benefit for getting a 27" 4k and then running 1440p resolution on it? or is that just backwards and... nonproductive?
  10. I've never experienced IPS panels, though tbh it sounds really appealing and might both look & feel like an upgrade. THEN AGAIN I've never had a 144hz either sooo... But thanks for the ideas, I'll throw them his way and maybe we can figure something out that'll work.
  11. D'oh. Well I hope Black Friday has some good deals on a 1080 or something XD Now I wonder if I should wait out for a deal and get both vidcard and monitor under 1000 together ? I never knew upgrading and making things work together can get so complicated
  12. it looks like... any of these "fit" the vague budget. asus rog pg279q (I think that's the one you linked) acer predator xb271hu (TN or IPS, though sounds like IPS is preferred) Do you think the 980 will perform okay with a 1440p though? I feel bad asking for a GPU upgrade now if he's dishing out this much for just a monitor.
  13. I'm looking at this one, specs look like it'll be good and lines up with what you guys recommend. I'm thinking about holding off on a new GPU and get the monitor for now, given that my GTX980 will perform well with this monitor: Acer Nitro Gaming Series VG270UP Edit: just saw something about Radeon freesync, I imagine it's the ATI counterpart for the GSync. Does it matter?
  14. Thank you for the quick responses guys! I was leaning towards 1440p gaming too, maybe wait out a few years and then upgrade both higher end card + 4k after a few years or so- since my rig now runs 60fps Destiny2 on... whatever settings it defaulted to (lots of highs it seems). Quick addendum, he linked me these earlier, so I guess that gives an idea on price range, at the very least. Plus, what do you guys think of these monitors anyway? We're thinking BlackFriday/CyberMonday might have some good pickings too, though I think these monitors are on early sale or something. Dell 28 Ultra HD 4k Monitor - S2817Q LG 22" HD 4k 22MD4KA Dell 24 Gaming S2417DG Also, checked out that ASUS ROG that _d0nut linked, looks pretty good. I'll show it to the father and see what he thinks.
  15. Long story short, I'm being spoiled by a long-time-no-see father, and I don't want to abuse the budget (and I don't know what the budget is, tbh.) The rest of the specs will be listed below, but right now I am currently running a GTX 980 that a friend gave to me a while back (hindsight I should have let the father decide on buying me a new one), but now the father is insisting I get a 4k monitor (I'm currently using some budget Samsung SyncMaster P2370HD). So I KNOW anything and everything thrown at me will be an upgrade, but I want to try and maximize price vs performance, so please advise. I will be mostly gaming, anything/everything Blizzard (mostly Destiny 2 right now, though, and finally going to play Witcher 3 soon, and Steam games that consoles would port to PC.) From what I understand (and please correct me if I'm wrong,) higher resolution = lower frames with video card. Also, I keep seeing "1ms response" and 144hz refresh for monitors... but all that is beyond me as well. So, TL;DR questions: what monitor should I get for gaming, should I bother with 4k, how much farther should I upgrade the videocard? Please give suggestions, like I said, I don't know the budget and I don't want to abuse the generosity. Here's what I have now, (just going down the long receipt my father paid in cash (!!!??!)) This is a hell of an upgrade for me, my old pc was kind of trash to today's standards. mobo: ASUS TUF Z370 gpu: Nvidia GTX 980 (a friend gave me long ago, IN A TITAN X BOX) cpu: i7 8700k ram: 16gb ddr4 3200 vengeance rgb pro ssd: Samsung 970 evo + some old 7200 I have os: windows 10 home cooler?: Corsair Hydro Dual 120mm 240mm Radiator Power?: P&C Silence 80+Plat 1050w Case: Enermax Equilence Mid w/ Panoramic Glass,, Insulation Panel xtra Fan: SilenX 140x140x25mm + whatever warranty and build cost Fry's Electronics threw at us.... $1800ish!
