  1. I guess I chose Debian for being not-ubuntu. I mean Canonical is a good company, but it's a company and it wants to make profits, and that's when Amazon comes into place. Although I can use Gnome 3 on Ubuntu, but apparently this latter is more heavyweight on Ubuntu than on Debian. Also heard about ubuntu forums "censorship", and ubuntu basically takes its packets from Debian testing or unstable repos so, my choice was pretty easy to make in the end. (Plus ubuntu ditched Nautilus)
  2. Yeah I know but I heard that Ubuntu was easier to start linux though I can start with Debian as well
  3. Hi Debian guys I'm planning on using Debian as my main OS (not on a hurry), and I don't know if I should use, say, Ubuntu until Debian stretch comes out stable, or if I should start using Jessie straightaway. It's gonna be the first time I use linux (I already know a few things), so let me know if it's a point to consider for the choice. Thank you
  4. usHi guys, I've been doing light java programming on for a while now with the help of my java programming book, and I start to think that I'll need a person that knows well java that can give simple answers to question that I get. I'd really like to improve my programming skills, so if you're interested, just message me. Thanks
  5. Hi, the t460p is too expensive for what it offers, it has 4 gigs of ram, which is not enough, and a slow, cheap HDD (in my country). I'm not sure yet if I'll have to carry a laptop with me, so having the asus would be preferable option if it acts as a desktop replacement. I considered the xps 13 (kaby lake) cause a lot of people claim it's the best laptop on the market, though its price/performance is not that great but I heard a lot of good stuff about it. I think it will suit my needs perfecly if I want a schoolwork, development (and very light gaming) machine. Even that one is like twice as powerful as the one I'm using right now (2010).
  6. Hi guys I'm gonna get a laptop quite soon, and I got down to 2 options which are: the dell xps 13 developer edition (cause linux goodness) and the asus rog gl752vw-something I really don't know which one to choose between these two, one is an ultrabook that I will probably need for school and the other one is more of a desktop replacement. I'm going to program a bit, game a bit (more if I get the asus), do schoolwork on both The keyboard is very important to me, and battery life is important only if I have to go to school with it. That's all, let me know what you think.
  7. Hi linux users I wanna know what desktop environment you're using and why. I'm gonna have to choose one soon so a little bit of help would be great.
  8. Hi guys, I'm gonna get a dell xps 13 developer edition soon, and I wanna know if the portal series runs on intel hd 620. I can't find any serious answer anywhere, cause this h/w is pretty new so please let me know. Ben
  9. I'm pretty sure the electrons in copper travel at around 2/3 of c.
  10. Hey guys, My name is Benjamin and I'm an aspiring computer engineer. I like science, gaming and almost anything that's related to computers, Which leads me to that: I'm going to buy my first laptop (not desktop) because of mobility, even if I'm losing battery life. I have made my decision: I'll run linux off of it(Debian or ubuntu) and I have a 1100$ budget. I am going to program on it, learn, watch movies, and game. I've already found a MSI laptop for this price: it has a core i7 6700hq, a 256gB ssd(+1tB HD), a gtx 970m with a 17 inch screen. I was wondering if it was a bit overkill for my needs but I want to have comfortable performance for 5 to 6 years. So I'd like your advices and opinion and why not giving me any other laptop recommandations. Thanks, Benjamin.
  11. Yeah that's a cool build but you don't need to buy 3 extra fans cause the included ones are already quite good

    1. 20gstation

      20gstation

The led fan was for the back of the case for extra bling, while the sp fans were for the cooler.

There are performant fans packed with the cooler so the sp fans are not very useful if you want a quiet system

  12. Yeah I think the next thing to upgrade is your CPU
  13. Not sure if the tiny little RPi CPU/GPU is capable of handling that much pixels so you should probably use a HDMI splitter yup
  14. Well thanks everyone for these quick answers! I'm not gonna bump to X99 because I am on a budget and you get less single core performance with a 5820k/6800k and it's not worth an extra 200$. Thank you for your help, i'm gonna go for the i7 6700
