  1. Thanks for the suggestion, I will look into the FX 8300 further, but my understanding is that many CAD programs still rely heavily on single threaded performance.
  2. I'm considering a xeon but I don't quite understand them. However, at CAD $345 for the processor alone, wouldn't I be better off with the 3570k if they offer similar performance?
  3. I should've specified these are Canadian dollars. The processor alone is $468 on newegg.ca, I'm not sure I can justify spending that much on an upgrade.
  4. I'm looking to upgrade my computer for better performance in CAD programs such as Siemen's NX 10 and Solidworks, as well as in games, but CAD performance is more important. I currently have an X4 955, with 8Gb of RAM. Looking online I found an old off the shelf, full system with an i7-2600 (non-k) for $210 and an i5-3570k, 8Gb of RAM, and Z77 motherboard for $300. I only really need a new processor and motherboard. What are your suggestions? Do I go for the i7 with hyperthreading, or the newer and overclockable i5, maybe I should just keep what I have for now, or should I look at something completely different? Looking for your input.   7. I'm not intent on gaming. The difficulty I am having in deciding which notebook I should is pick is that seemingly each of these notebooks has a flaw of some sort. For instance, the 2nd one seems quite nice and I would've probably bought it had it not been for the lack of an ethernet port and reviews that stated the 32GB SSD cache was hardly noticeable.

  9. Hello, I'm about to start post-secondary education in a couple weeks and I will be in need of a laptop so that I can hopefully get some work done during empty blocks. I am familiar with desktop computer hardware but laptops are foreign to me, I would therefore appreciate some help in ensuring that I make a smart purchase. The kind of notebook I am looking for: should be either 14" or 15.6" should have an Intel ivy bridge or haswell core i5 cpu. should have a reasonably long battery life and I think it would be neat if it included a small caching ssd or an mSATA port I could add one to. I live in Canada and my budget is around 550 CAD. I will be visiting the USA in a little bit so I could potentially pick up a laptop there if the prices are better. If you have any recommendations I would be glad to hear them. The constraints are flexible. Thank you kindly for your help.
  10. Adding more material between the peltier and the CPU will decrease performance. What I was suggesting is that since the peltier is larger than your CPU, a portion of the cold side will be exposed to the oil. I reccommend you insulate any part of the cold side of the peltier that is exposed to the oil in order to maximize performace.
  11. You should use some kind insulation around the exposed peliter to improve its performance. Copper is very thermally conductive and therefore would be less than ideal as an insulator. You want to cover up all of the cold side of the TEC that is exposed to the oil. I'm at a loss as to what kind of insulation you could submerge in oil. Perhaps some kind of foam might work.
  12. The only issue I see is that it measures 62x62mm. I think the TEC is larger than the IHS.

  14. A car radiator isn't a bad idea but it might be simpler to pick up something like a 9x120mm water cooling radiator, mainly due to fan mounting and tubing sizes or whatnot.
  15. dTload = (1 – (heat load/max cooling power)) * max temp difference 1100t is a 125W processor at stcok voltage of 1.325. Assuming you bring the voltage all the way up to 1.6 (supposedly dangerous but might be doable on a TEC) you're CPU will be pulling 150W. And if the no load dT for the TEC is around 50 degrees celcius. You can expect temperatures of ~5 degrees at load. Theoretically.
