  1. Hi, I am planning on repasting my laptop with Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut. I know that liquid metal can't be used with aluminum heatsinks because the gallium will react with the aluminum and damage the heatsink. So, my question is, does it matter if there is aluminum under the surface where the liquid metal is applied? (I am awaiting a reply from my laptop manufacturer to confirm this) My laptop's heatsink is made of copper-coated aluminum (I think it's aluminum, could be something else like nickel). Would applying the Conductonaut be safe, since it would be applied on the copper? Or should I refrain from using liquid metal due to the presence of aluminum in layers under the surface of the heatsink? Thanks to anyone who can lead me in the right direction! Chris

Is the performance increase of the Kaby Lake model worth that much?

  4. Hello Linus Tech Tips Community, I am wondering if I could upgrade a gaming laptop with a Skylake i7-6820HK to a new Kaby Lake i7-7820HK. Seeing that the Kaby Lake CPU can overclock up to 4.5GHz compared to only 4.1GHz on Skylake, I would like to upgrade for the speed boost (CPU power is more important to me than GPU power -- I am also doing software development besides gaming). More specifically, is this possible on laptops from MSI's GT series (seen here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B01AC40K2G/ref=dp_olp_all_mbc?ie=UTF8&condition=all)? Do I upgrade myself (take old CPU out of socket and install new one) or do I have to send it to someone? Also, would I need a new motherboard for the Kaby Lake chip? I will also be reaching out to MSI about this but was wondering if anybody here in the community knew the answer or had any info for me. Thanks very much to all who reply!

  6. Hello Linus Tech Tips community, I am looking for a new laptop and am currently deciding between the MSI GT73VR Titan, EVGA SC 17 1070, and Aorus X7 DT V6. Could you guys please recommend which model I should get out of these three? I have chosen these three because I wanted an overclockable i7-6820HK and a NVIDIA Pascal GPU. I will be doing some gaming but mostly will be using the GPU for rendering and image design; this being the case, the GTX 1070 and GTX 1080 are both so powerful and both exceed what I need a GPU for that I do not care which model I get. Besides what I previously mentioned, the only thing I would like a fast CPU for is that I will be developing using Visual Studio.   8. Hello Linus Tech Tips community, I am thinking of buying a laptop with an i7-6820HK and I am wondering how much you could overclock this CPU. Could you guys please post how fast an overclock you managed to get or you heard someone else get? Please also mention what laptop the i7-6820HK was installed in so I know what kind of cooling system it has. Thank you to everyone who replies.

  10. Hi LTT community, I am looking into building a PC and I have a question about what graphics card I should choose. I am a prosumer, who will be gaming occasionally but will mostly be rendering images / videos (in other words using the GPU for rendering and general computing, mostly). My question is whether I should go for an Nvidia Titan XP or two GTX 1080s in SLI. Thanks to anyone who answers!

  12. Thanks for the reply! That was a good idea, but unfortunately, there are no listings on eBay for this exact model PC. The closest I could find was a similar PC, but it was used and didn't have the exact specs I want.

  14. Hi, I am wondering if there is a laptop on the market with an Intel Core i7-6700K processor (http://ark.intel.com/products/88195/Intel-Core-i7-6700K-Processor-8M-Cache-up-to-4_20-GHz). I know it is a desktop processor, but has anyone made it into a laptop? If not, is there any way I can build my own laptop with this processor; how? Thanks very much to all who reply.
