  3. Ever wonder why PC builders build PC’s? What is their motivation to build? What sparked that interest both individually and as a community? I may have the answer to some of those questions. I recently wrote a research paper for my writing class. My research question asked how the PC building ecosystem grew and continues to grow and what fuels this expansion into the unknown. The question was a good starting point to gather my ideas and research more about this silent community. Nevertheless, throughout my research, I came across a lot of interesting information that I would like to share. There was some secondary research conducted using the internet and my school's library. But more importantly, administering the survey I made yielded the more critical information; primary research is what I needed to get done. The survey was posted both here (linustechtips) and /r/buildapc on Reddit. I used Google Forums to create the survey. 120 responses were received from both communities. From what I gathered and analyzed, I believe that PC builders dedicate their time to building computers because it provides an enjoyable pastime to a final product that, in today’s world, is invaluable and can not only teach us things, but allow us to share our knowledge with others. For instance, connecting to the internet and partake in the world. The majority of my work pointed to enjoyment, hobbies, and expressing common interest with others. The important thing to realize is that community is supporting the individual and vice versa. Without the motivation for the individual builder, there would be no PC building community. And without the community and the support behind it, PC building would be a rarity. Furthermore, the desire to build better and stronger machines is always in play. The aspiration to build better, cheaper, and faster computers. We communicate with each other and talk to each other. This forum is a great example of this type of system. It works really well. As a LinusTechTips forum member, I feel right at home and that I could talk about anything computers to the community. I can also ask for help if I run into any technical troubles. The purpose of doing this research was not only to spread the knowledge of the PC master race (it's a joke, calm down, and move on), but to find out more about the workings of the community and the builder as an individual. This assignment gave me a great excuse to survey the community. I have always wanted to bring together the PC building community and learn about them, and ultimately see how the individual affects the community. Here are the results of the survey organized neatly in tables. I did not include all the questions that were asked because some didn't have much relation to what needs to be said here. The four questions shown below are sufficient enough to summarize the survey results.
  4. Yessir! But as humpingpandas said, it'll require Displayport or Dual-Link DVI. HDMI only supports 1920 x 1080. My motherboard does only supports HDMI and VGA
  5. Mostly spreadsheets and such. I use programs like MatLab, Photoshop, and some others. Nothing too crazy. Screen real estate is a must in the work I do.
  6. Hey there, I'm contemplating buying a LG 29UM65-P 29IN Widescreen LED 21:9 in the hopes that it will increase my productivity and look nice on my desk. I guess 1080p is not cutting it for me anymore; I'm too good for it. Joking aside, my current computer has an AMD A10-5800K installed, with no dedicated GPU. I was wondering whether or not it'll be able to support the LG monitor using its integrated GPU core. Also, would I be able to run another 1080p monitor along side with the LG one? My motherboard only has 2 video outputs so I'm limited to the amount of monitors I can have. I will not be gaming what so ever. Let me know what you think, or if you have any advice. Thanks a bunch, Marc.
  7. Hmmm. Can you elaborate on what you mean by pinout not compatible? But yeah, the system boots fine without the Seasonic Power Cable plugged in.
  8. Hey guys, So I run a Plex server for my house and I have 7 hard drives and a SSD. I recently bought a new HDD but forgot that I ran out of sata power connector. Now, my modular PSU still has one more plug for Sata/Peripheral power and I know my PSU can handle the power. It's a Rosewill HIVE 750 and I only run a 660ti, i5 4750K and the hard drives. So nothing crazy. Last week I decided I need the SATA power cord to run my last HDD so my Plex server can run at full capacity again. However, stupidly I bought a Seasonic 6pin to 4 SATA connectors cable thinking there can't be a difference since it's just a cable. I looked at the pin configuration of my other Rosewill 6 pin sata power connectors and noticed ONE pin in a different spot compared to the Seasonic one. (They both had 5 actual pins and one with nothing in it, a pseudo pin.) So I pulled the different pin out of the Seasonic 6pin Sata Power cable and put it into the correct corresponding pin location so that now the Seasonic cable has the same exact pin locations as my Rosewill Sata cables that work perfectly fine. So happy me plugs the "fixed" Seasonic into the PSU and connect the lone HDD up to it. Turn on PC. PC turns on for half a second and shuts down. Every time. What is wrong here? I tried different ports with no avail. I am really confused. It's simple. What do you think I'm doing wrong? What do you think I should do? Thanks for the help Marc Toro
  9. Oh hahah, I see. I have to agree too.
  10. How come? Am I violating any rules?
  11. I mentioned the confusion in the edit above
