Sadly, that's how it is. To that: shut it user 3. Updates shouldn't kill your system, and yes, GUIs that are in use are part of a system. If your distribution/OS can't even guarantee that, it's not even suitable for power users. I would and did and still do rip any distribution/OS apart for that. It's actually great Linus killed it. It got some attention, there's finally some movement to make it clearer. This prevalent notion of “you should have to learn” is why it was even possible in the first place.
Console output and confirmation prompts ceased to be meaningful because there are too much of them. Just like clicking “Yes” on the “Are you sure?” prompt and or entering the admin password becomes meaningless if the system keeps asking you to do it. It's bad design if the defaults eventually just make people stop thinking about it.
“I thought it was just a fancy sudo prompt” is basically the result that. sudo or inputting a password lost it's meaning because of users has to use it too often.
