  1. Hello, hopefully this post doesnt make me look stupid - I have the system in my bio. The general gist of it is I have a custom built desktop with a i7 10700k, a 3070ti, and 32 gigs of 3200mhz ram. I am currently plugged into gigabit ethernet with 4ms latency. I have been getting into VR for some time now with a wired Oculus Quest 2 at 120hz, and seem to be having some strange performance issues much of the time. For instance, if have been using my PC for regular things, stop that, and load up beatsaber, or even just steamvr home, it often lags immensely with 10fps and unable to keep up with headtracking. I restart the game, sometimes it fixes sometimes it doesn't. Most of the time if I restart my PC, it solves it for the gaming session - this is a fairly new windows 10 install, so I dont know what could start running to cripple it, especially as the CPU/GPU/RAM usage at game opening time is low. This sometimes happens with GTA V as well after a tab out, but a couple more tab in tab outs seem to fix that. I have also been playing some VR chat, and I have been getting pretty low FPS for VR with this hardware - like, on highly detailed worlds with at most 3 accounts 30-50fps. Now, I'd say that it is just so much custom stuff loading - but it shouldnt be! I have fpsvr installed, and ignoring all the red and low fps/frametimes/etc, my cpu/gpu are both hovering around 30% usage, my ram is fine in usage, and my vram is hovering around 6.7/7.8gb. Unless its super single threaded or something, my cpu should have much more room to perform - and so should my gpu! Temps should be fine, I have a 280mm aio and a front to back/top airflow along with an msi gaming x trio card. My main thought so far is that it could be lack of VRAM, which comes from when I load a hq vrchat room (not restarting PC first) and I am at VRAM 7.4/7.8gb, but that still should have a little breathing room - and the problem persists after a restart and the vram dropping. What makes this even stranger, is my mother is using my RX580 to play VRChat with me as I am away at college - she is getting very similar FPS to me! She has an i7 4930k, 32gb ddr3 ram, and an RX580 running on an SSD with very little other software running - should be way weaker than my system in every regard - yet her fps is so similar to mine. What is going on? We both have the same VR headset, except hers is the higher storage model, and I'm using it wired while shes using it airlink. Any ideas?
  2. Alright, so I seem to have solved it - it appears that it mightve been the wifi card? Not 100% sure, but i plugged it via ethernet and now steamvr has decided to target render at 100% again. Weird. Will update with any new finds
  3. Figured out why it decided 80% the headset was set to 72hz. Set it back to 120 and now it’s targeting 58% again - 90hz and it’s targeting 78%. Man this is annoying
  4. Well I reset to windows 10, and now it’s targeting 80% - it looks way better, but not perfect like before. Any other recommendations?
  5. Yeah, there are still fresh Win11 drivers available for the rx580, I downloaded them to try after the win update and nothing changed. And Win11 is quite unstable in my experience, yeah - I have tons of bugs on my desktop that has win 11, but no visible drop in performance I’ve noticed (tho it’s nvidia and way better/newer hw). Maybe the next step really is a downgrade to win10 and try again - it’d suck to have to reinstall everything, but there’s not much installed anyway besides steam and oculus. Feel free to fire away any more ideas - I’ll be working on it again tomorrow, and wouldn’t mind not having to downgrade.
  6. Hello - I have been putting together my previous built parts for my mother to play VR with - they are a 4930k and an (almost new, was refurbished) RX580. We tested them last night in VR - they worked great, pretty much 120fps (at 120hz) all the time, crystal clear visuals. Today I took apart that test bench and put them into a new case with a new cooler - while setting it back up, windows forced an update. Hooray. SteamVR, in its behind the scenes performance ranking, is deciding and forcing that SteamVR should target 58% of the native res of the headset - what? It looks awful, the frames are awful, and I cant seem to fix it! This was not the case last night, and temps are still perfectly fine! The best I've gotten it to target today is like 74% resolution with some fiddling. The headset is an Quest 2, the Windows 11 build is a fresh NTLite custom build preset someone put together with some of the junk taken out (before the update I suppose, not sure how much was put back), and the Windows 11 also had the TPM-2.0 req taken out by rufus. I've tried updating drivers, I've tried SteamVR beta, and a bunch of other stuff and I'm not sure what else to do - the only other VR capable GPU i have on hand is in my rig, and I aint taking it out. I've tried the Quest 2 with AirLink and with USB - nada. We tried AirLink only last night, and it worked beautifully. I've used these parts for VR on Win 10 over a year ago, and they worked fine then too. Maybe next step is to go back to Win10? Or reset it with a new NTLite Win11 and turn off auto update? I am not sure. I cant afford to currently and mom does not want to put any more money into this computer - I wanted to get a card from amazon and see if it fixes the problem, but shes not into that. BTW the case is a Corsair 4000D Airflow, nice case, and the cooler is a black noctua U9S in case you were curious. U9S works alright, not the best for this toasty chip but temps are alright. Thanks! EDIT - yes i've tried forcing high % resolution, its still grainy and awful. Bitrate doesnt appear to be the issue, its SteamVR
  7. No i believe I had gotten it working with blu-rays on mac, it was an older mac with some blu-ray software. I had it working on Windows at least, but I have no idea how i got it to work so long ago
  8. I have some applications that are supposed to recognize Blurays and work with them, but none of them recognize it anymore - they did last time I had this work. Hell, once upon a time windows would load the bluray as a disk i can drag stuff onto, but now it just spins stops spins without loading it into the OS at all. I know this drive works and has worked before
  9. Hello - hopefully this is the right area. This is a recurring issue I have fixed before on previous Windows installs for this PC, but I can't seem to fix this time. I have a blu-ray drive that I know works - it worked on a Mac and this PC before resetting it, and it recognizes dvd discs. The problem comes in when I try to put in a bluray disc - it spins, it stop. it spins, it stops. It does not recognize it. Windows in device manager seems to give this bluray drive cd/dvd drive drivers constantly - I checked, and thats what it gave this drive. I think i fixed it by changing drivers last time - but Windows doesnt have any blu-ray alternative drivers, and I cannot find any online. Any ideas? This has been an issue for quite a long time, I had fixed it like 4 installs ago and then it broke again. Man i sure do love Windows
  10. That case looks very nice, but my gpu is literally 1mm too long lmao. I want an itx because I want a smaller build - I currently have an h510i mid tower and it’s just very large for my small bedroom, and will be large for a college apartment. A small desk pc would be very nice while also letting me use my current case psu etc to make some old hardware into a server. Plus I need a new motherboard anyway. i will check out the used market for mobo options, thank you.
  11. any mITX Z490 board suggestions? I don't see any on pcpartpicker for under 300$, almost all of then are towards 400$ (which is quite hefty for a 10th gen). I also cant hackintosh this PC anymore with that 3070ti - I'm probably going to get a Mac for college eventually anyway, so hackintoshing isnt a priority anymore.
  12. I currently have a 850w mobo that wont fit in the mITX case, but I was trying to prepare for future upgrades with a higher wattage psu. Next upgrade will probably be much more power hungry, especially if I end up having the funds to grab a 4080 16gb and a current gen cpu (that I don't really need). Things are heating up in the power requirements lol.
  13. Budget (including currency): Lower, mobo preferably under or around 200, case not exorbitant - psu is expensive enough. Country: USA Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: everything from text editing to heavy heavy workloads Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): Got a i7 10700k cpu, a MSI RTX 3070TI Gaming X Trio, psu selected (not purchased) a 1000w silverstone. Am converting my midtower to a ITX build. Would like it to accomadate my 280mm aio, not a necessity; if it does not, I will grab a low profile noctua air cooler. Will need WIFI card, hence why my current chosen mobo has it built in (no ethernet): heres what I am currently looking at but didn't know if anyone had any better suggestions: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/CrazyBrick15/saved/#view=hc7Nzy Would like to have a overclocking mobo, but my heart is not set on it. Thanks.
  14. Want to make a hackintosh out of it, as I hate windows and hope it will control the hardware better (I have a low end surface) - open core is locked from the bios and its real annoying, I can only disable so much via flags.
