Greetings LTT Community,
I've recently upgraded my system completely to a Ryzen 3000 build, including a brand new RX5700 XT from MSI (The mech Armor model, since I wasn't able to sell a kidney for my PC this time around XD). I noticed that in some games, especially the super old MMO i occasionally play with my friends, I get CRAZY loud "squealing" noises from my GPU. I am suspecting Coilwhine but it is REALLY loud. I can hear it through my headphones sometimes especially when it changes in pitch and it makes my otherwhise pretty damn silent build really annoying when playing these older game.
The issue ONLY happens when I start a game that causes m FPS to completely go through the roof, starting at around 300 ish up into the multiple thousands, depending on the game I play. The noise also changes in pitch and immediately goes away if I change to desktop or another application. I am very sensitive to these high pitched noises and they cause me headaches over prolonged times or really tire me out.
I have tried to use things like FRTC and such, but some of these games are literally so old that Radeon Control Center doesn't even pick them up. Or they just plain up ignore the settings(in the case of Stellaris e.g. but this one also ignores the Vsync flag entirely for some reason THX paradox!)
Ive been reading up a bit and discussing this issue with some colleagues at work and they recommended me to check my PSU for issues. I have to admit that my PSU is a bit on the older side, a Be Quiet! Straight Power 11 at 600Watts that ive used since... 2014~ish(I actually have no idea when i bought this thing). Its never been a problem before though. I noticed SOME coil whine on my old GPU, an Asus RX480 Strix but with the new GPU its CRAZY.
If you guys have some tips as to how I could maybe hard-enforce a limit on my FPS or otherwhise reduce the noise level in low load high fps scenarios short of buying me two Freesync monitors (if that'd even help), I'd be super glad.
Thanks in advance,
SotS
