  1. Thanks for the reply! The 5000D Airflow looks great, did you purchase extra fans or do the included 2x120mm do a good enough job?
  2. Hi, I'm looking to upgrade my case and get a good CPU cooler. Here are my specs : - Ryzen 7 3700X - MSI MPG B550 Gaming Plus motherboard - MSI RTX 3080 Gaming Z Trio My current case is a Fractal Define R4 that I've had for nearly 10 years. I'm still using the stock CPU cooler. I'd like to upgrade to a new case with better airflow and get a good CPU cooler. My budget is around 200-300$ for both I really don't care for RGBs or even a side window, what matters to me is good airflow and if possible, as quiet as possible So far I was thinking of getting the Corsair 4000D airflow case and the Noctua NH-D15 cooler, would those be good choices? Thanks for the help!
  3. @dalekphalm Thanks for the link. Will the audio be carried over as well? I know that HDMI to HDMI carries the audio, but does it still work if the computer outputs via VGA only?
  4. Hi everyone, my father's laptop only has a VGA output and the TV only has a HDMI input. He'd like to connect his laptop to the TV so that he can watch Netflix on there. I'm looking for a VGA to HDMI converter, does such a thing exists? I looked on Amazon, but they're all "HDMI to VGA" and I'm not sure if that would work. For example, I found this one : https://www.amazon.ca/Rankie-Gold-Plated-Active-Adapter-Charging/dp/B00ZMV7RL2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1473551904&sr=8-1&keywords=vga+to+hdmi .. but it says in the description that it only works one way (HDMI to VGA) "Note: this device converters from HDMI to VGA, NOT VGA to HDMI" I have a VGA/DVI converter that came with one of my GPUs, could I use that combined with a DVI to HDMI cable (that I know exists and works, since I used to have one for my monitor) ? Thanks for the help
  5. From what I've seen in other distros installation, you should be able to partition it how you want during the install. What I did is left a chunk of "free space", and when I started installing it, I was able to select that "free space" and make my partitions (/, /home and swap) on that free space. You can just start the installation process, you'll be able to see if it'll work or not before you get the change to mess anything up.
  6. I guess you can buy them in any order you want, you won't have anything working until you have all the parts anyways. I wouldn't recommand doing that though. Instead, save your money until you can buy everything at the same time, and by the time you can do it, chances are there will be new hardware out that can affect the prices of some components you had in mind - or provide better alternatives, like a revision for a product or something like that. You won't get a working computer faster by buying it piece by piece, so I see no practical advantages to doing it.
  7. Hello everyone, I currently dual-boot Windows and Linux, and I would like to monitor my bandwidth usage. I'm considering getting a mobile hub with a data plan so that I can have internet on my devices when there's no Wi-fi available (iPhone, iPad and a laptop). Is there a user-friendly tool that will keep track of it and be able to display accurate reports daily/weekly/monthly? I searched on Google and found a lot of CLI tools that can show the bandwidth usage, but I'm looking for something a little more complete that can show reports and graphs if possible. It would be very helpful to see exactly what is consumming the most bandwidth. I'm on Linux most of the time, but I use Windows for gaming (about 90% Linux 10% Windows, so if the tool is only for Linux it's not the end of the world) What tools do you guys use/recommand? Thank you
  8. Is it still trying to boot from the CD or is it booting from the hard drive? Go in the BIOS and make sure that it boots from the CD. Even if you messed up your OS install, I don't know why you wouldn't be able to access the data on the CD, format your drive and try a clean install again.
  9. What happens when you try to boot from the Windows install CD? Aren't you able to access the menu where you can install the OS? I'm not sure I understand your problem and I have trouble reading huge chunks of text with no paragraphs.
  10. Hello everyone, I just installed ElementaryOS and I'm having a permissions problem. All the files inside root (/) are locked, there's a lock icon next to them and I can't write there. It will only work if I open the File System as admin. It's a problem when applications (like Sublime Text) try to create files or overwirte existing files, it will not let me. How can I give my main user full access to, at least, the /var/www folder? I tried this : sudo chmod 777 /var/www but it didn't work, the lock icon is still there and I can't write to this folder. How can I give my current user permissions over that particular folder? Thank you for your help.
  11. Don't they have an option to pay a bit more per month to get unlimited data cap? By myself I was easily busting the 150GB cap we had before, but my ISP (Videotron, Canadian ISP) offers unlimited data for like 5$ more per month. Definitely worth it, considering that they charge you a ridiculous amount per GB over the cap.
  12. Hi everyone, in the last few months, two Kingston USB sticks have died on me and I'm looking for new ones. I want something that is reliable, and that won't break after a couple of months for no reason! I live in Canada, and would like it from Amazon if possible. I don't mind ordering from other retailers if it's really worth it though. I'm not looking for the most performant thing ever, I only use them as backup and also as bootable drives for Windows and Linux. As for the capacity, anywhere from 16GB/32GB is fine, I don't really want a 64GB one as I'd rather have 2-3 smaller ones. Not a big fan of putting all my "eggs in the same basket" after my recent badlucks! For the budget, I don't really have one, I don't mind paying a bit more for some quality. Note For obvious reasons, I want to avoid going with Kingston. Thanks for the help.
  13. I installed Linux (which I am now using), but I still get the same problem when I try to format the USB with GParted.
  14. Yes I've tried that, it doesn't work unfortunetly. "Diskpart" says it does, but I'm not able to do anything with the drive anymore. When I click on it in the Windows explorer, it says "Insert a disk into Removable Disk (F:)", and I can't do anything. If I go in the storage manager of Windwos, I see the 28GB of unallocated space, but when I right-click on it I can't create a new volume or anything.
  15. I don't mind trying that, will it work on a VM simply or do I have to make a dedicated Linux partition? I'm downloading CrunchBang at the moment, we'll see how it goes.
  16. Hello everyone, I'm trying to format my 28GB USB stick which is unaccessible (there's a message that tells me I have to format it before I use it). However, when I try to format it, it fails and there's a message that warns me that the drive is write protected, and it doesn't work. I tried a few things ... - Diskpart to change the read-only attribute to false - Create the WriteProtect key in the registry and set it to 0 - Use software (like some Kingston utilty tool) to format it, but they won't even see the drive Do you guys know of any software that can be used to restore a USB drive that is write-protected? It's very annoying not to be able to use it. Thank you for your help.
  17. Doesn't look right, is there anything weird in your extensions list? A lot of software installers are trying to install some adware and other crap. Do you have ad problems on other websites as well? You can always use Adblock only for that page if you need to.
  18. I don't know if that's what he's using, but Excel works perfectly fine and you can achieve the same result very easily. - Get your data and write it in columns - Select everything, and go to Insert > Bar > 2D Bar You'll get a basic graph like this : Double-click on the background (white), in Fill, select Picture or texture fill, and select the file of your choice Double-click on the white behind the bars, and select No Fill Adjust the text color like you would normally, and tweak the bars colors until you're satisfied.
  19. What have you tried so far? Do you have any existing code to show? What do you struggle with? It's been a while since I've done any DB access in C# but the basic concept is something like this : fetch results from database -> iterate over results -> for every iteration, add the new row to the table. Which part of that are you having trouble with?
  20. Getting a SSD won't affect your game (ie the framerate), but it will speed up the loading time of all the applications on it - which for a laptop is pretty much .. everything. It's definitely a nice addition to an aging system, especially for the booting time and launch time of larger applications.

    BenQ or ASUS?

Haha yeah it is. My coworker use some sort of cheap television as a monitor, somewhere around 32-34" I think and it's 1080p, it's horrible. For a TV not too bad, but for a monitor that sits less than a meter in front of your face .. meh

    BenQ or ASUS?

I wouldn't get a 27" 1080p, and have only good things to say about ASUS monitors. If the ASUS is IPS and the BenQ is not, that's another advantage, and response time is pretty much irrelevant. 5ms is just fine.
  23. Thanks for the quick replies guy. The reason I went for the 970 and not a 290 is that Nvidia GPUs outperform the AMD ones in some games he play, for some reason people with high-end AMD cards always had lower FPS than people with an equivalent Nvidia card. djdwosk97, thanks for the updated build, I think that's what I'll recommand him. The PSU can always be upgraded later if he decides to get a new GPU or something (it's a PITA to swap it and have to buy a new one, but 99% sure that's not going to happen) and I'd rather stay within budget. If he thinks he'll SLI later on he can always hold back on the SSD for now and get a bigger PSU, or just increase his budget a bit.
  24. Hello guys, I've made this build for a friend, his budget is 1000$ USD max, and it's for gaming only (no video/audio/3D editing/rendering) PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant CPU: Intel Core i5-4440 3.1GHz Quad-Core Processor ($169.61 @ OutletPC) CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper TX3 54.8 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($17.99 @ SuperBiiz) Motherboard: ASRock H97 Anniversary ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($71.99 @ SuperBiiz) Memory: Team Elite Plus 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($57.97 @ OutletPC) Storage: A-Data Premier Pro SP600 256GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($87.99 @ NCIX US) Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($47.89 @ OutletPC) Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 970 4GB Superclocked ACX 2.0 Video Card ($329.00 @ NCIX US) Case: Corsair 200R ATX Mid Tower Case ($49.99 @ Amazon) Power Supply: EVGA 500W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply ($29.99 @ NCIX US) Optical Drive: Samsung SH-224DB/BEBE DVD/CD Writer ($14.98 @ OutletPC) Operating System: Microsoft Windows 8.1 (OEM) (64-bit) ($87.75 @ OutletPC) Total: $965.15 I'm not sure about the case, it's been a while since I've made any parts list and I don't know which are the "good cheap" cases anymore. My go-to case used to be the Source 210 Elite, but I'm not sure what's the best for this budget. What improvements would you guys suggest? Is a 500W PSU enough for this build? If you can find other ways to save money I'll take it, even though the max budget is 1000$, the lower the better Thanks all for the help!
  25. Hello, I'm making a PHP calendar application. It's very simple, I take a year, iterate through the months, display a tile for each day (so 365 tiles spreaded across twelve calendars) and I would like to color the day's tile depending on the number of events planned that day. For example, a day with only 1-2 events would be green, one with 3-4 yellow, and one with 5 or more events would be displayed in red. Here's the code that I use to display the calendar : $year = 2015;for($month = 1; $month <= 12; $month++){ //Get the infos on that month $numDays = cal_days_in_month(0, $month, $year); $firstDay = date("w", strtotime($year . "-" . $month . "-1")); //For offset $lastDay = date("w", strtotime($year . "-" . $month . "-" . $numDays)); //For offset //Display the offset days for($i = 0; $i < $firstDay; $i++) { echo '<div class="day offset-day"></div>'; } //Display regular days for($j = 1; $j <= $numDays; $j++) { echo '<div class="day">' . $j . '</div>'; } //Display offset days for($i = 0; $i < (7 - $lastDay); $i++) { echo '<div class="day offset-day"></div>'; }} The code above works as expected, the problem is when I try to color the days depending on the number of events. This is how the events are stored in the databse : id - int (11)name - VARCHAR(255)startingTime - int(11)endingTime - int(11) I use the startingTime and endingTime columns to store the timestamps for the beginning and the end of each event. Since it's madness to make one query per day, to fetch all the events of that day, I fetch all my events for that specific year with one query, before the calendar is outputted. Here's the query that I use : SELECT startingTime, endingTime FROM events WHERE startingTime >= :yearBegin and startingTime <= :yearEnd Where yearBegin is the timestamp for January 1st of that year, and yearEnd the timestamp for December 31st. This returns an array like this : array(3) { [0]=> array(4) { ["startingTime"]=> string(10) "1442448000" [0]=> string(10) "1442448000" ["endingTime"]=> string(10) "1442448000" [1]=> string(10) "1442448000" } [1]=> array(4) { ["startingTime"]=> string(10) "1441756800" [0]=> string(10) "1441756800" ["endingTime"]=> string(10) "1441756800" [1]=> string(10) "1441756800" } Finally, here's the problem. What is the best way to get the information that I want (number of events per day) with that information? I have no clue how I can properly iterate through that and get the informations that I want. I'm open to changing the DB structure if needed, and to take a completely different approach towards the handling of the events. At the moment I struggle to find an effective solution. Thank you all for your help, let me know if you need any more informations.
