  1. Dear techtippers, Recently (well, about 6 months ago) I bought an APC UPS for my home server. I've bought it to grow so it runs my server for about 1.5 hours I think so I haven't gotten around to setting up graceful shutdowns of my VM's. Now I'd like to do this but it seems there is not clear cut solution for this. I have an APS SMT1500 and I'm running an Esxi host on my server to host all of my VMs. The VMs are windows, linux, Freenas, a bit of everything. I'd like to give the command when my UPS is at #% battery it start gracefully shutting down Esxi VMs. Do any of you have experience with this?
  2. Oh god, I need Microsoft Edge for 4k netflix... Damn, I really wanted to watch everything at a faster pace, I hate watching at 1x speed, it's so slow... Even then, it means I watch 1080p on a 4k monitor. When I tried to play youtube 1440p at 1.5X it had a lot of problems keeping up, constantly desyncing the audio. Edit: and it seems I need a new GPU indeed. A GTX 10XX series are a 7th gen Intel CPU.
  3. Hey guys, I just bought a new TV, the Samsung UE75MU7000. I connected this to many things, one of which is my computer. It has a GTX980 in it. I also have Plex and Netflix. I want to play both from my computer to the screen and not the native apps because I like to watch things faster than 1x speed and sadly this isn't possible in any native app on the TV. What I've noticed is, when I use plex and play it in the webplayer on my computer, displaying on the TV (set to 4k resolution) it is very choppy. Audio desyncs completely, even at 1x speed it's hard for it to follow. The image just can't keep up with the speed. When I use Netflix at 1.5x speed it can follow, audio never desyncs, I just don't get 4k (I think because the internet is not fast enough but I doubt that too). Could this problem be because I have a GTX980? All posts I find talk about gaming on 4k, but I'm not gaming, just showing. I doubt the GTX980 is not strong enough to drive a 4k TV but I honestly don't know what the problem could be. Does anybody have any idea? Kind regards.
  4. Hey guys! Today I was thinking about my NAS and how I could make it better. I'm running a server on ESXI with Freenas on it and some other VM's. Now I've been thinking about what I should do with my NAS. Right now I have 5 2 TB WD drives in RaidZ2 set up and it's getting more and more filled. I'm thinking how I could best add storage etc. I've been thinking about changing my NAS OS to unraid, as this will give me more flexibility in terms of adding drives (otherwise I'd buy 5 4TB drives and either change the old ones or make another vdev and stripe them together). My NAS OS can be very stupid, as I'm using other VM's for sickrage, plex etc. Now I've read that FreeNAS is faster and more reliable, but is unraid worse? Right now I have at most 3 users on my plex server and I use the NAS as simple media storage and backups. I do however also create my own android apps and later (read when I save some more money) I would like to directly work on my workstation but with the files on the server (as this would stop me needing to back up everything by hand). So I don't know if UnRaid would be able to handle this. Right now I feel I'm somewhat on a crossroads, as I can still remove all my data from my volume and do something completely different, if necessary. Somebody have any suggestions/experiences to help me?
  5. I was thinking that docker would make it easier to run and maintain the services I use. I could just run it on a windows VM sure. Now I am doubting :-P
  6. Hey guys, Thanks for the quick response! I guess i'll have to learn to use docker now. I already have an Ubuntu vm running so I'll have to figure out how to make it run. Maybe I'll just search for a gui for docker, just to make sure I get how it works the first time. Anybody here that has experience using docker? I would run sickrage, transmission and plex for starters.
  7. Hi guys, So I've got a server at home that I've built myself. It's been running FreeNAS for quite some time now and I thought about upgrading it to ESXI and running FreeNAS on it. This is what I did today and 15 hours later it's still not working. My biggest problem right now is that I can't seem to get internet in any of my jails and that plugins are installed but can't be reached (again because no internet). I've done a clean install, even wiped all of my disks (good thing I had a backup that only took 18 hours to complete) and I still have this problem. Maybe tomorrow after the restore of the backup I'll reboot my main router. I've checked the settings of the jail in the FreeNAS GUI, in the files of the jail, compared them to the files of the host (which has normal internet). Even the default route in the jails is set to 192.168.0.1 (my main router). All SHOULD be ok, and I honestly don't see what is wrong. If I can't find anything tomorrow morning I'm just gonna keep FreeNAS for my storage and move every other service to another VM. It's 1 in the morning and I started at 9 am. Could somebody help me? If you need more information, just ask.
  8. Hi guys! I've recently built my first server and put freenas on it. In the near future I will probably go with ESXi and virtualise freenas on it but for now i've only got freenas. I'd like to run my own WoW server on it so I can play around with it and maybe play with some friends. Do you guys know if I can make it run in a freenas jail? Thanks!
  9. Hi guys! So i've built my first server a couple of months ago and am now thinking about buying a server rack for it. Right now I only have a 4U server but I know that later I'll put some more in it, like a pfsense router, maybe some things for home automation and stuff like that but that's for the future. What I'm hoping here are some pointers for buying my first rack. Things I need to look out for, what is important and what is not so,... A question I had was about the widths of racks. I've found a couple of racks with different widths. Do the bigger ones just have more space left on the sides or are there differences in width in rack equipement? Thanks!
  10. Hi guys! I'm posting on the forum because I know it's a very helpful community and I hope to get some opinions and experiences from other people. So, I'm looking for a pair of headphones. They have to be over-ear, have bluetooth, have Active Noise Cancellation, and be of good quality. Naturally I have some contenders for this position. First of all I have the Bose QC 35. Second there is the Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 Wireless And lastly we have the Sennheiser PXC 550. All of these have pros and cons and I'm trying to decide. I'm probably going to buy them all and try them first for a week or so to find out which is the best for me but for now, which one would you buy? I'm going to use it in an open office space with some people in it and it would help me concentrate to have it more quiet around me.
  11. Ok I finally found out how to use IPMI on this board and set it up. I could see the "Fan Speed Mode" was on "Full" instead of on "Standard". Praise Jezus, Allah and whoever you want my god, I'm not going deaf anymore. Thanks for the quick help you guys!
  12. @Bananasplit_00 Is it possible it changed because of the electricity going off and on again? @gamerking This is the motherboard and this is the case. And I assembled the server myself, picking all the components.
  13. Help! Ok now I've got your attention. I've built a FreeNAS box for myself using some high grade server equipment. It was all running smoothly until somebody thought it was a good idea to cut off the electricity and put it on again. Now my box is going crazy with fan speeds. The fans are going full speed all the time, even when it is completely idle. The temps of my cores and my drives are all better than OK so that isn't the problem either. They are all plugged in fine and the setup hasn't changed. Can somebody help me? I have no idea what to do right now. Every person who tries to 'solve' the problem just says "buy more quiet fans" but the thing is, I know they make a lot of sound but they shouldn't be at full speed to begin with.
