  1. Where is a 20+4 b450? Some B550 boards can be slightly better but that is generally not the case with boards released concurrently. In other words, if ASUS releases an x570 and a b550 at the same time the b550 is very unlikely to be better. Now I’ve not seen a B550 with more than 12 phases. X570 many many do. So the mobo mfgs are tending to treat the chipsets as a class set of features that go along with said chipset but yes they are not dependent upon.

Fine, you're right, but its curious how the higher end chipsets get more and better VRMs, so as for classifying the boards (as their marketing teams have done) its useful to lump them into categories. Could you have a B450 with 20+4 power phases? Possibly, but it would be a hella expensive B450 wouldn't it?
  4. Ok, I get that but the chipsets seem to affect how many VRMs are on the board.

  6. Budget (including currency): $1200 Country: USA Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Games, VMware workstation, Photoshop Other details reusing parts from previous build. DDR4 gskill (like 3200 or something) I can afford the x570 boards but didn’t want to and was tired of asus. They have a few quirks I’m ready to be over (detection of thermal sensors by fan control apps for one). So did I make a mistake getting a BA CPU and what some are saying is a middle of the road Mobo? Thoughts and criticism welcome, I don’t want to be saddled with meh for the next few years. So is the x570 really that much better? Like 60% better?
  7. I appreciate that but my card will be used for more than gaming and the NVENC updates are both intriguing and much desired for transcoding video. And what you said about RAM makes sense, I think its a factor in the benchmarks though as others have noted. If an extra $400 gets me another year or so of maxed or nearly maxed out settings, even if not at 4k 3 years from now then I think its worth it in my case.

  9. Hah! Sorry I should have been more clear. @Jurrunio 4K for sure! What do the highest use games use today? I've read some use as much as 5GB but that was an article written in 2016... Sounding like the splurge might be worth it for me. I don't buy cards often, this will be a 3-4yr purchase likely. Yeah sucks near the end but whatever...my R9 270x has held on quite well for its specs.
  10. Ok I'm sure parts of this question/discussion have occurred but I'm not finding exactly what I'm looking for (or my Google Fu is failing me). Question: I'm fine with the benchmarks on the 2080s, though the 2080tis are impressive. My question is a matter of planning, "Is 11Gb of RAM useful? Are there any games that will make use of that much RAM now or in the next few years?" I'm happy to add another card later but as you're stuck with the amount of RAM I want to pick well now. So we're clear I'm not interested in entertaining the "just get a 1080ti" argument, I want some of the other features turing introduces. Thanks in advance!
  11. I just watched another vid, looks like the 7700k doesn't have any components to touch anyway, its all die under there and its all covered with what looks like a coating. So I guess I don't have to worry about this. I plan on going slow and steady, so no the spilling doesn't "deeply worry" me, its just a concern. So what exactly is the conformal coating doing? Is that for the gasket? Also, why use this stuff when the silicon material I listed works with such a variance of temps? Thanks for the reply!

There are a lot of other posts on delidding I know but I've been researching and I'd like to run my plan past some folks to see if I'm crazy: Delidding tool: Rockit 88 Delid & Relid (https://www.amazon.com/Rockit-88-Delid-Relid-1150/dp/B06WVYL61Q) New TIM: Conductonaut (https://www.amazon.com/Thermal-Grizzly-Conductonaut-Grease-Paste/dp/B01A9KIGSI#customerReviews) Silicon Sealant: Permatex 82180 (http://a.co/7ghd7gm) My plan: Delid i7700k Cover up electrical components to protect from liquid metal seepage and drips. I saw a LTT video where they put electrical tape over some of the surrounding components next to the die. Should I do that or should I use some of this silicon sealant to coat those components? I suppose if I go the Silicon route it will prevent me from undoing that but my issue with electrical tape is what happens longer term (5-7 years) with the electrical tape? Make a gasket with sealant. For this step, it doesn't look like it needs to be heat treated to make its gasket, am I wrong here? Am I nuts or does this seem like a decent plan?
  13. For UHD bluray playback I found only the LG 16NS40 works to actually read the disk. I'm looking for a slimline that works too but I am unwilling to try due to a bad Amazon experience lately.   14. I just built one myself, here is the Newegg wishlist: The card does the playback fairly smoothly, the i3 uses about all its got to feed the graphics card. Haven't tried using the onboard. Nothing really fully supports 4k playback in all its various capacities. Kodi is only partially there, MPC too is only partly there.
