    wi fi

the router is about 4 or 5 years old. A Sagecom Fast 5260 single family home out in the sticks. it supports both bands, but I'm not sure of the numbers.

    wi fi

Hi, I have been using a standard cat-6 cable for my internet for years. but, I just moved my desktop to a more convenient location. and the only way to connect it was by running the cable across a doorway. and you guessed it, somebody caught their foot on the cable and wrecked it. so i have 2 options, buy a new cable, and get a "bridge" to hide the cable under, or go wifi. the distance to the router is a straight 18 feet. i just checked the speed of another (older) wired computer in our house, and it was getting 94.8 download, and 22 and change upload. if i go with a wireless adapter (either internal card or usb dongle), what can i realistically expect from one of those?

    Clone

I have never done this before, so I have a couple of questions. 1) when you clone a drive (I am going from a hard drive to a SSD) does the original disk keep all of its data, or is it all transferred to the destination disk? 2) like many people, I want to keep using the original hard drive to hold files where speed is not so important (like downloaded files, photographs, service manuals, etc.). 3) IF all the original (from the hard disk) stays on the original drive, can I delete or remove windows from that drive, because that id quite large, and I would really like to use that space for other things. 4)is there a free cloning software download that is easy for a newbie to do with minimal risk of messing things up and loosing all of the information that I have accumulated over the past 3 years? and where can I find that file to download? Thanks in advance.
  4. so my main computer has for some reason suffered a motherboard failure. and its just at the age that its to good to junk, but not new enough that parts are everywhere. the cpu is an intel i5 6500. i have found a few boards that i am interested in. and of course the one i like the best, the seller wants a ridiculous $60.00 to ship it. at this point, i only know of 2 retailers that carry a variety of parts. Newegg, and Tiger Direct. so i am interested in finding some new suppliers. where do you shop for parts? and does anyone know if you can purchase products direct from ASUS?
  5. so i have been seeing ads for this service for quite a while. and i get the idea behind it. but what i do not get, is how i would know what web sites would be accessible from a specific country.i don't think i have ever gotten a denial to view any web page i wanted to find.
  6. well, i have cooled down, and am ready to take another shot at this. i went on you tube, and i am finding all kinds of stuff, showing how to TOTALLY wipe a sss, one that says i have to disable the uefi in order to install windows, and many other things. do i need to completely wipe all data from the drive? and if so, i know there are a couple of partitions in my working "C" drive, do i have to manually install those, or will windows take care of that? and what about initializing the drive? i feel like this may be the missing link in my efforts. but i really am not sure.
  7. i dont know how to do that. i removed the ssd and installed it in my working computer. i formatted it in ntfs, and that all went well. so i tried to install windows onto it, and now it says just the opposite. it can not install windows because it is formatted in mbr style or mode or what ever ( sorry, i am so frustrated with this i would really like to chop it to bits with my axe). now it says it can ONLY install to the gpt type!
  8. i am going to do my best to make this as short as possible. i just got a second hand I5 (6500) desktop with no hard drive. so i had a small 128gb ssd laying around from an upgrade (my sons computer), so i decided to use that in it. windows wouldn't boot, or repair it's self, so i thought i would just format it and install windows 10 onto it. but it will not let me format it, saying that the format type (GPT) is incorrect. so that is beyond my knowledge database. and i do not know what to do at this point. i have another I5 6500 desktop (that i built from scratch), can i just connect the ssd to it, and format it (erasing everything), and go from there? if so, will the working I5 computer let me choose what type of format to use when wiping the ssd? my son is off at college, and will not be home until spring break.
  9. so i just got a (pretty nice i might add) hand me down computer, that i am leaving on the main floor of our home. my basement computer, which is where i normally game, has been set up on steam for some time, and worked fine. the key word there, is WORKED. now, steam will not let me sign in for some reason. do i NEED to have a separate account for each computer? do i have to log out of steam on one, before i can log in on the other one? is there something else i need to do to make this work? thanks
  10. i need to replace my son's ethernet cable, is there any advantage or disadvantage performance wise with a flat cable vs. round? he is a gamer, so he actually uses the high speed connection (up to 100mb/sec) more than the rest of us.

    tv ?

my wife found this quite by accident, and i am curious about it. https://www.skywiretvantenna.com/orderint-mod/vsl1.php?&s1=789&s2=594&s3=29940920&s4=490016&s5=570073859 my wife thinks that it will receive cable channels like discovery, amc, history etc. but i am thinking its just going to pull in abc, cbs, nbc, and fox. does anyone actually know what is right? thanks.
  12. i REALLY do not want to root a BRAND NEW IN WARRANTY phone! besides the fact that i would have NO CLUE how to do it. so lets scratch that off the list please!
  13. i can not find a way to skip, or even close out (like the standard "X") the ads. how do i do either?
  14. hi, i replaced my ancient Nokia Lumia 520 with a Motorola G5+. which means Android not Windows. so far most things i have been adjusting to without much trouble. until today. i went to watch one of my favorite You Tubers, and got quite an unpleasant surprise. i do not mind an occasional ad. and can tolerate a couple of them once in a while. but after the 4th straight ad, of which none of them i had ANY interest in,i closed the app in disgust. i tried again later, where it started the same stinking ads as before. i am NOT going to pay you tube to view ad free, that does not set well with me. in my eyes, that is extortion. i asked my 16 year old son, if there was an ad blocker i could use like i do in my computer, but he said "not for Android." so since he does not know everything, i am here asking for help. is there an ad blocker i can use in Android and or You Tube on Android? i looked in the app store and found a slew of them. but i do not know what will work well, or where for that matter.
