  1. Thanks, I have #3 thankfully. Any recommendations for #1 and #2?
  2. I get your point and I agree, I wouldn't watch TV on this but my mom loves it so I'm trying to make it work. I have no idea what resolution it plays at but the picture isn't terrible.
  3. If this isn't the right subforum please let me know. We recently upgraded our TV service and my mom's old precious TV previously connected via coax, whereas the new box only has HDMI. Yes that sounds weird but it's an old Toshiba CJ300C, the back only has poles on it. Somehow we have an adaptor which converted the incoming coax signal from the TV box into two signals that connect to two poles on the back of the TV. The back of the TV doesn't have any inputs like RCA. I tried looking for an adaptor that takes HDMI as an input and outputs a coax signal but nothing relevant caught my eye. Any help is appreciated.
  4. Got it, thanks. Any recommendation for swapping the CPU/MOBO to AMD? Seems the CPU is out of stock everywhere
  5. Okay thanks. I don't really need more space but I'll check if 2x8tb is good. I would get a smaller USB but that was the only one in stock when I posted the link. Unless you have a different fast low profile one worth getting? Would love seeing some more thoughts as well
  6. Can TrueNAS boot from an internal SSD? I haven't really decided between TrueNAS/unraid, I'm finding it very difficult to compare the two. Do you have experience with both of them? I guess unraid would be easier in terms of usability and upgrading in future versus TrueNAS but I'm not sure. I think I'd lean towards unraid. Thanks, I didn't know that the recovery doesn't apply to RAID arrays. I suppose then the added price of Ironwolf Pro would only really be the 2 years warranty for me then? For now the drives are enough for me, I was going to go with 2x8TB but another person I spoke with mentioned 3x6TB would be better for reliability/recovery if something goes wrong. From what I understand I can add more drives in unraid later without them having to be the same as the original drives. Would this be a good USB drive for unraid? https://www.newegg.ca/samsung-model-muf-128ab-am-128gb/p/N82E16820147718 It seems fast and low profile and the price seems great.
  7. Thanks for your comments. I downgraded the SSD to just be a boot drive, seems I'd spend a similar amount on a good USB drive and I don't imagine they have the same longevity to run the OS that I'd be comfortable with. I went with Ironwolf pro because of the 5 year warranty and their included data recovery service. I wasn't a big fan of Seagate previously but the recent CMR vs SMR shenanigans that WD went through put me off on them. What if I were to mix and match between the brands but keep them all 6TB? Also, I'm not sure how much usable storage I'll have with this setup.
  8. Budget (including currency): ~$1500 with drives or ~$800 without drives (see draft parts list below) but flexible Country: Canada Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Backing up 3 household computers and important file storage. Streaming video (up to 4k) to the computers and smart TVs (probably max 2 concurrent streams 1 @ 4k stream and 1 @1080p. Maybe add video cameras in the future. Likely using either unraid or TrueNAS/FreeNAS Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): Draft parts list https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/r9hrK3 I don't need any peripherals (as long as I can run headless for the most part, if I can't then I'll use an existing monitor. I'm struggling to figure out what low cost CPUs support ECC, I've heard it's worth considering. I don't know if I need a raid card or some hardware to manage the drives. I'd appreciate any recommendations for a change in CPU/MOBO/RAM for ECC or raid support and guidance on the RAID front. I was thinking that the SDD would be a high speed cache but if it's not required then I suppose I can use a good USB to run the OS? Apologies if this is the wrong forum.
  9. Did you consider also using the server as a backup solution? Or consider the usage of ECC ram if so?
  10. Budget is about $300-$400, again whatever gives the best value for the amount. If something's really great for a bit more than I'm all for it. Some additional information, I game at 1080p on a 144hz monitor but I also have a secondary monitor at 1680x1050 that does 60hz. Current I run both of off DVI I believe. My case is a Fractal Design Define R5 which says it has 310mm for length and 180mm for height of the GPU. Thanks in advance.
  11. It's 2x4GB and 2x8GB, I had the 2x4GB initially when i built the PC and added the 16GB after I started running out of RAM with normal use. PSU is EVGA Supernova 750W G2 80 Plus Gold Any specific GPU recommendations?
  12. Hi everyone, I'm looking to upgrade my PC to handle more of the recent games, I.e., Apex Legends, COD Warzone, etc. Current specs: i5-6600k Gigabyte z170-xpsli 24gb ram gskill ddr4 XFX R9 380 Samsung 850evo SSD 750W EVGA power supply I'm not sure what's the most beneficial part to upgrade, especially not sure if it's really worth it to upgrade the CPU given the limited upgrade with my motherboard. I'm open to anything but good price to performance is important to me, if it's a lot of money for small gain then it's not worth it. Appreciate your comments in advance.
  13. Would you say that most DIY software is more hassle than it's worth? No transcoding as far as I know, I have video in 720p/1080p/4k and maybe some worse resolutions, I'll be streaming to either my 4k TV or a computer monitor. Does it have to transcode if the resolution doesn't match exactly? I saw the 8TB drives, but is there any warranty if the drive is shucked? Also had bad experience with Seagate overall that's why I was thinking of the red pro; longer warranty. Appreciate your thoughts. I have the same sentiments with respect to custom building, love building a new computer. Of course troubleshooting is never fun, thankfully I haven't had to do much.. Is long term maintenance with a server significant? I'm hoping for more of a set it and forget it, maybe with minor tweaking now and again. Do you have any experience with support from QNAP/Synology? It seems that QNAP doesn't provide much of a warranty only one year it seems whereas Synology is more towards 3. I did some research and found these two units, would appreciate some feedback to help refine my search. https://www.newegg.ca/synology-ds918/p/N82E16822108682 https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1184488-REG/qnap_ts_451_8g_us_turbo_nas_ts_451_nas.html Appreciate the help.
  14. Hi everyone, I'd like to buy/build a new computer to achieve the following objectives: * VPN/tunnel - to provide privacy/protection when using public/work WiFi * Backup - to backup all PCs on the network with redundancy along with important documents/photos * Streaming - to stream video (up to 1 x 4k and 3 x 1080p, maximum) to 3 PCs and 1 TV The reason I'm considering custom built is that NAS units seem to be fairly overpriced for what they provide, e.g., this nas which is over $400 for 2 bays of storage. However, if it ends up providing more benefit over a custom built then I'm open to buying a pre-built machine. Overall, I'm trying to maximize value provided for the cost and get the best price to performance ratio. I'm comfortable building a PC and I've built several in the past. I've not used Linux/unraid/freenas before but if there's significant cost savings over a Windows option then I'd be all for learning. As far as I understand I won't need the computer to do any trans-coding. I'm hoping you can provide some general guidance, i.e., purchase WD red pro drives, use an SSD boot/cache drive, etc. Thanks for the help.
  15. Basically I'm just wondering if this hardware is compatible. I know the SSD physically fits the motherboard, but I've heard that some SSDs don't work with some motherboards. This SSD isn't on GIGABYTE'S M.2 Support list, but it looks like it's outdated. If there are any other suggestions for a different M.2 SSD, please feel free to recommend.
