  1. I have just built a NAS and it will be running freeNas. i have 4 3Tb WD reds. The main use for this nas is to act as a media server it will be running plex, and also act as your typical data backup. What Raid level would anyone recommend for this build. I currently have about 3Tb of media. I would prefer not to lose half my storage to redundancy, but if that is the concuss for best option i can live with it.
  2. my provider is korcett. And i understand what you are saying, but saying that the internet has a "normal" use is bullshit. I am paying rent and there for am paying for the internet. My usage of it should not be restricted. Nothing against you, just venting to the cosmos.
  3. WAN. however i don't need to access the server myself, the plex website is the interface to the server.
  4. Still a no go. Any other suggestions?
  5. That would work but Plex media server has to be able to make changes to the router or i have to forward a port. I can't do either of these to the exterior router
  6. My problem is that in order for the plex server to work it has to be able to manipulate the router it is connected to. It can do that to mine but not router 1. I need to bypass router 1 altogether. The solutions that i have been reading about are using a DMZ or VPN. do either of those sound like they would work
  7. scratch that we are talking the same routers
  8. i think are talking different routers. There is the internet then there is router1 that routs the internet to the different apartments. Then in my room i have an ethernet port on the wall that i plug my router(router 2) into. i have complete control over router 2 but have absolutely no control over router one.
  9. I don't have any access to the primary router. I called the company and they won't adjust any settings and will not forward any port. And i assume it is a business grade router ( I live in a complex with at least 320 units on the premises). But to your second point if i can assign an ip to the second router that is outside the range of the first then the second router will handle all NAT responsibilities?
  10. I need to get around a double nat without access to the exterior router. I have a MDU set up, and i can only adjust settings on my personal router, not the router providing the signal to mine. Any ideas on how i can get around this issue?
  11. I have about 4Tb of movies/ tv shows. And i am not trying to access the server from the web. I need to allow the server to access its website. The site handles the access of the media. The issue is getting around the double nas.
  12. OK, here is my setup. I have built a NAS running FreeNas, i have set up the plex media server plugin. The system works for my local network. Where i start to run into a problem is when i turn on the remote access option. I started by setting my router to forwarding the correct port, still was running into an issue then found that i have to deal with a double nat. I live in an apartment that has a MDU setup, essentially there is no modem in my apartment just one ethernet jack. The apartment provides the internet to all the tenants. I contacted the company that provides the internet and they will not forward ports for any tenants. So this is where i am, i need to find away to make it available outside of my apt. I am trying not to have to pay for a service as the whole point of this build was to do away with monthly bills for storage, that being said if the only way around this issue is a paid service then i will do what i have to. Any ideas/solutions would be greatly appreciated.
  13. Probably a quick question for this site. Do i need anything special on a NAS running freeNas, any special hardware to make it fully accessible over the internet?
  14. Thanks for the build, a few questions. Will i have enough ports on the board? Do you think it is safe to go with the Toshiba drives over WD or Seagate? an extra 100 isn't going to bother me. But thanks for the build. I didn't even know that site existed
