  1. I purchased my first smartphone yesterday and I was wondering if there was a comprehensive guide somewhere on first time set up. For example, blocking/removing bloatware, making sure privacy and security settings are correct, that sort of thing.
  2. It might because it has to give you targeted ads, but I am not sure.
  3. I am looking for an entry level smartphone and saw the Moto G4. On Amazon right now it is $180 USD for the 32 GB model from Prime members. Are there any good reviews somewhere? It seems like a good deal to me because I already have Prime, and do not mind Amazon ads.
  4. No preference, whichever one is cheaper.
  5. I don't have a budget yet until I get more information, but it will be less than the flagship phones prices. Also I am in the United States, if that matters.
  6. I am looking at getting a smartphone but am overwhelmed by the information about each one. This would be my first one and I am having trouble deciphering all the specs and technical information. Other than a good battery and not an iPhone, I do not really know what to look for in a smartphone. Any tips on what features to look for, what to avoid, etc. I have Verizon but can you buy a phone from elsewhere and have them activate it after the fact?
  7. I should have mentioned that I would not sell it, I was thinking more of what I could use it for, or strip it for parts. Or possibly donate it to someone.
  8. Yesterday I found an old computer (Dell Inspiron 530) sitting next to a dumpster so I appropriated it for myself. It is a little old but it still runs fine. I installed Ubuntu on it, but I realized that I already have a computer that I re-purposed for Ubuntu. I am not really sure what I should use it for other than a dedicated BOINC machine. Any suggestions? It has an Intel Core 2 Q6600, 2GB RAM, GeForce 9600 GT, 100 GB OCZ SSD, and a Fatal1ty 750W semi-modular PSU.

  10. I want to avoid Lenovo because of the recent security concerns, and I prefer a new laptop over a used one. Do you know a good place to find used laptops that are still high in quality, ie not going to die or have a degraded battery within a few months?
  11. I am searching for a new laptop to use as a secondary computer. I already have a gaming desktop, so it does not need to play games. It needs to have at least 500GB of storage and a good battery life (6 or more hours). My budget is under about $500 USD, but it needs to have Windows, so no Chromebooks. I have narrowed it down to either a Dell Inspirion, Acer Aspire E, or the ASUS F and R lines. Does anyone have personal experience using one of these laptops? Is the difference between a Pentium, Celeron, and Core noticeable?
  12. I will either install Ubuntu or Scientific Linux, whichever one my work tells me will be more useful. I live in Southern California, if that helps. Not in any hurry, I have about 2 months until I will actually need it.
  13. I do still need windows for some programs that I run. Size does not matter as much.
