Hi guys.
New user here. . been a lurker for a while but figured I'd join in the fun.
Partly inspired by the dual Xeon budget gaming build, I started looking around for second-hand stuff here in Australia.
Stumbled upon a Supermicro X8DTL-iF dual Xeon motherboard for reasonable money (reasonable in Australian terms anyway) so I grabbed it.
It came loaded with 2 x E5606 (4 core/4 thread 2.13GHz) CPUs and 16Gb of DDR3 ECC RAM.
Luckily the Supermicro boards in this series are ATX, so there wasn't too much drama mounting it up in a case.
First job was to remove the passive Supermicro coolers (designed for a server case with ducting) and fit a pair of Intel coolers with fans. Unfortunately the socket spacing on the board is a bit tight for the Intel coolers so they needed some attention with the Dremel to get them to fit side-by-side and clear the RAM in the first slot.
I found a pair of X5560 CPUs for cheap, so I've ordered those and waiting to swap them out.
This config runs on average 494 in Cinebench R15 on WIndows 10.
Should pick up considerably once the X5560s go in.
I put an ancient Geforce 9600 GT and a ASUS Xonar DG sound card from the boxes of random junk department (no onboard sound and VERY limited onboard video on these server-style boards) and used it as a workstation for a while; but it will be destined to become my ESXi whitebox for testing and development.
Anyway here's some pics of the odd bunch of worn out left overs! :-)
