  1. Motherboard is Asus z170 AR on the latest bios, using Windows 10. All headphones have 3.5mm plugs. Don't have any USB ones. Rear audio jack - audio comes out of the right speaker far louder than the left. Switching the RCA cables, then the audio comes out louder on the left. This leads me to believe it's a problem with the soundcard as opposed to my amp or speakers. There's heavy distortion when headphones are plugged in to it. When computer volume is turned down to reduce this, the sound is too quiet to hear. I don't have a headphone amp so no way to test using that. Front case jack - audio comes out both speakers at an equal volume, however there is heavy distortion that increases with the computer's volume. Anywhere above 20 is awful to listen to. Distortion is most pronounced on lows. None of my headphones are working when plugged into the front jack however when volume is high I hear interference when sound is meant to be playing eg. while a song is playing. With a pair of 25 Ohm overears I hear it clearly at 60, with a pair of 16 Ohm IEMs I hear it at 50. All of these problems surfaced within the past couple days. Previously had no problems. I've tried reinstalling the Realtek audio driver numerous times, restarting etc with no success. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
  2. Late update, but may as well finish this. I got an EVGA 980 ti SC+ the next day (partially so I can fit a pivot fan, partially for customer service). It works fine now. Even with a very moderate OC. Definitely the Strix's fault. I overclocked the CPU to 4.2ghz, honestly can't remember the voltage but it's been fine. Maybe the OC will fail in a few weeks like the first time, maybe I just got a really bad overclocker. Never did install/run Linux in the end, maybe when I have more free time. Thanks everyone for all the help given.
  3. Same old restart/crash with cpu on optimized defaults after a minute of Tomb Raider. Sorry, I'll correct myself, I'm mixing up information. With gpu tweak it was at 1.125v. When thinking that the reason it was crashing was due to low voltage I temporarily raised it to 1.175v. On afterburner there was more range and I increased to 1.225v but didn't use the card for anything intensive with this setting. I think. Could be wrong and actually changed it to this briefly with the extended overclocking options in gpu tweak. My justification being that I read in a thread that 1.225v is fine but 1.275v "is a little high".
  4. nz, yo Nope Ok, I'll be able to find a usb All of this has been happening when the gpu is at stock values. OC'd it was similar but with more artifacts. Portal 2 doesn't have any artifacts now (iirc), it just crashes. Good point with the cpu, will reset.
  5. I don't have a usb on me right now and it's 10:30pm so I don't want to go around knocking on doors. I'll retrieve my external hdd tomorrow.
  6. That's helpful to know, I've mainly just read assurance that overclocking has no lasting problems unless you crank up the voltage. I'll install a new OS tonight. No problems at all with the card previously. I've had it in the system since it was built a couple of months ago and only thought to overclock it again a few days ago.
  7. I'll hopefully buying a new card tomorrow so I can test then. No family members or friends in the city I've just moved to have a computer capable of running a 980.
  8. Well I've been intending to install Linux for a while now. How do I liveboot a Linux distro?
  9. w10 6bit running 362.0 whql asus 980 strix asus z170-ar corsair rm850i 16gb corsair lp ram i5 6600k 2x 250gb 850 evos nh-d14 acer xb270hu Whenever I play a fairly graphical intensive game for too long (2 or so minutes) my computer restarts. No blue screen or anything, it just turns off, then turns on. I believe my video card's doing this as I used aida64 to stress test everything but the gpu, no crash for 15 mins. Stress testing the video card by itself it crashed after around 5 mins. When I play a pixel game (Crypt of the Necrodancer) the sound occasionally distorts for a fraction of a second. Browsing and video is fine. Video card temps are in mid 70s early 80s under load (ambient ranges from 20-27). I this started happening when I overclocked it a few days ago. Originally tried afterburner but was tired and confused with interface so I switched back to gpu tweak without running anything with the afterburner changes I made. Did 1450mhz with 1.225 volts with gpu tweak. Both programs were reset to stock values and are now uninstalled. I've moderately overclocked it before with gpu tweak in a different machine, no problems at all back then. I'm not currently in a position where I can try it in a different computer but I was planning to upgrade to a 980 ti anyway so I guess I'm buying it early. Could be relevant that my computer occasionally crashes due to "overclock failed". This happens with multipliers 42-44 (haven't tried anything lower or higher) with voltages of stock-1.35v. My motherboards opt_cpu header doesn't work and I can't get into BIOS on the usual screen with delete or f2, only by going to the boot menu through shift restart or shorting the direct key. Typing this all down makes me realize it's actually a mess. Didn't want to rma mobo previously because it was bought (new) through someone else and it was a massive hassle dealing with them the first time and didn't want to go through it all again. The 980 strix is second hand, everything else was bought new a couple months ago. Real question is should I RMA the card or is there more troubleshooting to do? Thanks in advance. Edit: forgot to mention a few things. When overclocked, artifacts would appear in the splash screen of Portal 2, none in Tomb Raider 2013 that I remember. Currently, very briefly small artifacts appear when launching Necrodancer. None in non gaming so far. I also considered that it might be ram and ran memtest. It didn't find any problems after 10 mins so I quit prematurely.
  10. Eh, the only things I've read on it weren't favourable. For now I'm loading optimised defaults and just changing multiplier to 43 and vcore to 1.33.
  11. i5 6600k asus z170-ar corsair lp vengeance 16gb 2133mhz noctua nh-d14 corsair rm850i 980 strix 2x 250gb 850 evo (os on one) 512gb transcend 370s 1tb wd blue bios: 1101 (have read that newer bios have problems) Windows 10 64bit Originally I overclocked the cpu with a multiplier of 44, stock bclk, and a voltage of 1.30V. I also changed some other settings that the video I was watching recommended. I believe they were all pretty miscellaneous, the only one I remember was changing some value to 255.50 (approx). Temps peak at mid/high 60C's, with ambients of 20-30C. After using the computer overclocked for around a week it suddenly froze during Civilization V (had played a few sessions prior, all spanning a few hours) and on reboot I got the overclock failed message. I then increased the voltage to 1.35V. It has since been around four weeks since that happened. Today, I was doing casual browsing then turned off the screen. 10 minutes later I came back and turned it back on, but the screen stayed black. After turning it off then on with the power button I got the overclocking failed message again. I decreased the multiplier to 43 and am now typing this up. Did I lose the silicon lottery or is something else being done wrong? Thanks in advance.
  12. That's the plan, just seeing if there's anything I missed.
  13. About a week ago I bought a Gigabyte WB867D-I PCIe card (802.11ac and Bluetooth 4.0). A few times now the wifi aspect of it has stopped working. It has happened while the computer was on and I was using the internet, if I remember correctly it has also happened overnight, with me turning on the computer and it not working from there. The previous few times I've fixed it by either reseating the card in the PCIe lane and adjusting the usb plug on both ends (which isn't easy with how tight the fit to the motherboard usb header is). That isn't working this time. Bluetooth LED lights up, wifi one doesn't. Windows device manager sometimes says the device doesn't exist, lately it's just been saying it isn't connected. Changing PCIe lanes doesn't affect it. My motherboard is an Asus z170-ar I'm on Windows 10 64bit and have installed Gigabyte's latest drivers. I can't install them from the CD as I don't have an optical drive. Any help would be appreciated.
  14. Yeah found out I could just connect it with a screwdriver. I can get into bios with this, still can't get in via keyboard though. Thanks for the help
  15. I've found it, two pins on the lower part of the board. It says to connect them to a case cable that supports DirectKey. As far as I know my case doesn't have any such cable (InWin GR One). How can I activate it?
