Do you know of any better options? I've never owned a laptop before but i didn't think 4.1lb was heavy for a laptop

dude. 4.1lb is terrible battery life is truly a burden. If you are happy to spend 1.2K on a computer I would instead build a 900 dollar PC (with periferals) and 300 on a walmart Motile laptop. You will tank me later. Beefy laptops depreciate quickly and arent upgradable like a PC. Plus you would want to be able to bring you laptop all the time, an smaller laptop also means no need to have a huge backpack.

i just bought a gotrax v2 myself. Will see if it holds up, i only commute 2 miles each way and there is one massive hill (10 degrees), will let you know. But it is 260~ including taxes in amazon.

Total fail, the motor isn't strong enough got the incline and the disk brakes are poorly designed. I think I will end up going for a bike instead

    Well, a few things.

    1. the large majority of people who are going to click on this forum and vote are people like you, who arent happy with the direction of the channel.

    2. The christmas/black friday season is when companies are throwing out their marketing/advertising money. as a business LTT probably make more money in the two months leading up to Christmas than the previous 6 months.

    3. judging by the view counts lately on the LTT channel which are way up, any one complaining and making a big thing will just be a vocal minority no matter what these poll results say.

If you don't like it. Just don't watch. It's literally 10 minutes a day. I'm sure you can find something to entertain you that 10 minutes

Don't get all that defensive. It is people's opinion, and people are allowed to talk about that and how they feel. No one denies the success of LTT now. However, it is silly no to say that the channel is way different compared to what it used to be for well over a year. Change is always sad for some people, I include myself on that.

  4. so maybe a  SB6183 for 35 dollars.
    and a
    NETGEAR Nighthawk AX4 4-Stream WiFi 6 Router (RAX40) - AX300 for like 130?
or more modestely a ASUS Wireless-AC1700  for like 80 dollars?

Looking at the list. the SB6141 and the SB6183 would be the best of the cheaper options. I dont have exprience with Zoom products Id imagine they will work. The SB6141 tops out at about 200Mbps, I have this modem, its rock solid, but its cant do much over 200 Mbps. The SB8200, CM1000,CM1100 are solid from what I hear but they are hell of expensive as they are newer Docsis 3.1 modems. If it were me, Id consider the SB6183, BUT your provider is kinda fucked up in their speed tiers, as the SB6183 can support fasters speeds than 200 Mbps, Not sure if it can do 500 Mbps however, technically speaking the SB6190 should be able to HIT 500 Mbps, but they seem to only allow D3.1 modems for faster speeds. Go with the SB6183 if you think your not going to upgrade your speeds any time soon, other wise pick a D3.1 modem.

Just make sure you dont buy the SB6190 its a 32x8 modem, BUT it has issues, the Intel Puma 6 chip has known issues that they cant fix. These issues are well documented over at DSLreports.com, but any Puma 6 modem is garbage.

Router wise most will tell you ASUS or Netgear. I myself have a Synology RT2600AC, but its expensive. $200 USD just for the router. Guidelines for a router however would be at least WiFi 5 (Wireless AC).

See if your ISP has a list of compatible devices. Also if in the budget look at 16x4 or 24x8 devices. They will support faster speeds if you upgrade and help if the network becomes a bit congested. Besdies that I cant really recommend combo devices as they tend to suck.

Thank you for reaching out again. It seems they provide this list of supported devices https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://mediacomcable.com/compatible-retail-modems/&ved=2ahUKEwjbhoT45pXmAhUOsJ4KHV__BvQQFjALegQIARAB&usg=AOvVaw3MlgzdkVad15BdzYjxKeD8

I truly do not know anything about modems or routers. When I first made a post I thought routers and modems where the same thing as I have apparently only been exposed to modem + router combos.

It also seems to be that I cannot do much with a 100 dollar budget. I want a reliable connection, I don't want to have to turn my modem/router on and off to fix things. And ideally I could connect via USB a harddrive to access to movies easily.

What would you advice me to get, either a modem + router combo or separately, what devices should I get? I am willing to increase my budged to around 200 dollars but the less the more comfortable I would feel.

  6. I will be using mediacom in iowa city for a connection of 100mbps in a 650 sqft (60m2) apartment. Trying to get rid of the rental fee and looking to spend less than 100 dollars, the least the better. If possible it would be great for it to have a usb port for sharing a drive. I will only have 1 PC, 2 laptops, 2 phones connected to the internet and maybe a tv. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

What are you looking for in a phone?

    Why these 2 specifically?

    What are you currently using?

What did you like about it?

What did you not like about it?

What made you want a new phone?

The PIxel 3a is a terrible phone. Battery is piss small. 64GB of internal storage that cannot be expanded. If you think cloud storage is a fix, its not so simple. You need constant access to the internet and speeds matter. If you are away from home, you will need to use data to save to the cloud, and then use data again to download to access. Poor reception? No reception? Data caps too small? Problems.

Currently I use a Huawei mate 9 64gb. I like the battery, the only reason I want to upgrade is because I have been using for half a year it with an awfully shattered screen and I am not getting any updates

In stock when using a VPN from the UK to the US, however, to ship it here will cost another $20 (MyUS shipping), not including possible import fees, and conversion. So it works out roughly the same price (Original price I should say, in the UK) unfortunately. ($5 for the controller and another $12 to ship from Valve, $20 from MyUS, Import fees ~20%, then the conversion comes to around £35 :( (I even created a new steam account based in the US for it, but its not worth it imo) )

Shame, would have snapped one of these up instantly.

meanwhile I am trying to buy 2 but it does not let me.

there should no be any import fees on things under 200 usd tho

In that case the TP Link archer C7 is OK. It wont have advanced features but it will work fairly well. But basically router wise, anything Wireless AC (WiFi 5) on up should do the trick. But Id first look at what the ISP gives you. If you connect a router to a gateway you will have double NAT and conflicting WiFi signals if you dont turn the WIFi off on the ISP's box. Im not sure what Mediacom provides, they are not a provider in my area. But in any case Id spend at least $80 on a router, just becuase you buy cheap your get cheap. At $80-$100 you tend to get a fairly good product.

Thank you for your advice. I tend to be cheap ass but I think I will follow your directions and get something a little bit nicer, regardless I will still save money on the long run as they char 11 bucks monthly for their router rental.

Here is the deal, many routers have Gigabit Ethernet but not all routers can do Gigabit Internet. Also, keep in mind that the ISP will generally give you a Gateway(Modem/Router) so either your going to want to buy a modem as well or put what ever they give you in bridge mode. Im not familure with Mediacom's policies but MOST ISP's give you a Gateway, some like Spectrum give you a standard cable modem and you can rent a router. Thats the other thing, most of the time you are charged an equpment rental fee for what every piece of dog shit the ISP decides to give you.

That all being said. Asus, Netgear and Ubiquiti are the brands that people tend to suggest. TPLink is OK as well, as they are generally reguarded as the "Budget" brand. I have a Synology router and I say they are solid, but the router I have is around $200 USD. The key spec I would look at is the WAN to LAN throughput. Thats how you will know what kind of connection the router will be able to handle. Though that being said, Mediacom is a cable provider which means your probably looking at a 1 Gbps down but only like 30 to 45 Mbps up. Cable providers have shit upload rates compared to Fiber.

Check and see what your ISP provides. I prefer buying my own router, but with that budget, you are probably better using their's. A <$100 router is going to struggle to provide gigabit connections (it might work for speed tests, but will fall short once you get 5+ devices actively using it).

If the ISP doesn't provide anything, or charges an additional fee, and if your budget is non-negotiable, consider this router...

    https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-R6700-Nighthawk-Gigabit-Ethernet/dp/B00R2AZLD2/ref=sr_1_6?keywords=netgear+router+802.11ac&qid=1574448413&refinements=p_89%3ANETGEAR&rnid=2528832011&sr=8-6

You will not get more than about 400-500mbps on WiFi (shared between all WiFI devices), but that is all you can expect at that price point.

Sadly, WiFi 6 routers are not in your price range yet, and it is so new that it is hard to recommend one yet.

The router is the heart of your network. Its CPU touches every bit of data you use. In my opinion, it is not something you should go cheap on. If at all possible, I would consider something around $200. For that you could give WiFi 6 a try, or get a really solid 802.11ac router with a quad-core CPU.

I am an idiot, my internet connection will be 100mbps not gigabit (internet in the US is stupid expensive for some reason)

  11. I will be moving soon and mediacom seems to be th cheapest option for internet connection where I will be. I was wondering what router I should buy that was sub 100 dollars the cheaper the better but something that isn't totally bad (my internet connection will be 100mbps). The apartment is less than 700sqft

If you don't have furniture just mail your PC, monitor, and 2 suitcases. Then fly with ones suitcase as a carry on

I was thinking on that, I have just no clue how expensive it is to ship my pc and monitor. I certainly fear driving for 12 hours as an inexperience driver

You could look into if renting a U-Haul would be feasible for you. Frankly, even an Econoline van would be wholly suitable for your needs, much less a box truck.

If you own a car by the time the trip happens, that'd be a lot easier but maybe a U-Haul would be your best bet.

never thought U-haul could be an option for inter-sate moves. Thank you so much for the lead!

  13. Hello guys,

I am moving this late December to Iowa from Colorado. I got maybe 2 suitcases plus an small suitcase full of clothes and personal belongings plus an ITX PC and a 27 inch monitor. I was wondering how should I move, the cheaper the better. I might end up having a driver's license by the middle of december and I am a 21 year old male so I do not even know if renting a car is possible in the US given my situation. Any leads would be great, driving would be around 12 hours 850 miles trip.

    thank you for your time

The enthoo ITX isn't so big, how hard could it be to move around with it?

it isn't just that you know I have all my other stuff with me and I rather travel light than with all my stuff. I just care for a reasonable price i could ask for to sell my machine

I mean, where in Colorado? Used prices in Boulder are a little different from used prices in Limon.

Honestly, I'd just figure out a way to keep what you've got. You're going to have a hard time building something as capable as that for what you'll get out of it.

    Colorado springs

  16. It seems it will be a headache to move around with all my stuff.

    I have. I7 8700k

    Custom cables

    16gb ram @2999

I think it is best to go with a fixed plan, because now a days your going to do lots of streaming and that 2GB or so on will finish very fast and what not.

    24 minutes ago, Catsrules said:

Yes, it is about $10 per 1GB of data.  if your a very heavy cell phone users like over 2GB-3GB a month I wouldn't recommend them. Your better off going somewhere else. But if your around WiFi most of the time and just need that little bit of coverage when your not in WiFi range it isn't a bad deal.

Nice post I haven't heard of these guys.  The problem lies when you use your mobile data.  Some people are at home users so just use wifi but theres people that are always on the go and slowly that data rate of 2GB for free will finish fast especially if your streaming youtube videos or stream music and what not.

Back at home I do.end up using like 30gb a month. But there that is cheap relative to in the US. In my experience of phone service less life in the US I have had no real need for internet as I behave myself with it more. At home I have a decent 100mbps connection and in campus we got something like a 600mpbs so besides used on rare occasions when sending messages to my gf I find no use on phone internet. I do need however a phone number as it is mostly a hassle to explain to professors why I don't have one.

Tello seems good so far if it uses Sprint network. Will wait a few days until I have seen a few other options. Thank you for your help guys

  18. 12 minutes ago, Catsrules said:

The only phone service I know of that is around the $10 dollar range is Ting. But you won't get much from them for $10 It would be $6 just to have you phone connected to there network.
And it is $3 for each of the services minutes, texts and data.

If you can pool together with a group of people you can get better deals.

10 minutes ago, Turtle Rig said:

Yes I have heard of Ting but your going to get a nice charge using mobile data.  Just depends how much you use it out of wifi in your home and what not.

Tracphone is like 100$ a year for a bunch of texting and calling. I'm pretty sure data and extra service is ala carte.

How about Tello? Seems decent for cheap prices though I am unsure about coverage and their costumer service

  19. I don't what are some cheap just phone and SMS (no need to be unlimited) preferably pay-as you go system for a simcard in the US. I find it ridiculous how much a phone plan can cost here while everywhere I been offer 10gig 4g plans for 7 dollars a month.

Cheap to me means below 10 dollars a month.

I would think coverage is important too, I live in Colorado springs.

    Any leads would be appreciated.
