Hi all - I have had a really weird week this week, and the issue I had (Which I guess is "hopefully" resolved now) has confused me immensely. While I feel the issue is now resolved, I would like to see if there is any explanation as to why what happened... Happened. I have Windows 10 installed on an NVMe drive, a secondary NVMe drive via PCIe and lastly a SATA 2tb hard drive for storage. My Windows 10 install on my NVMe has been fine, however recently I have noticed a lot of Windows Explorer crashing while accessing my SATA drive, in the end the SATA drive created a separate "System Reserved" partition. I removed this partition and then on my very next restart Windows failed to boot ("Reboot select proper boot device"). This confused me, since the SATA had no correlation to the NVMe. I tried every which way to boot into Windows and it didn't - I resigned myself to having to reinstall Windows fresh. I tried to repair via the Start-Up Repair, but it couldn't. CMD Prompt recognised the drive as being there, but wouldn't carry out certain commands to allow me to access it. Upon a fresh Windows install, the original files from the prior Windows installation were all saved in their entirity. It made absolutely no sense to me. The issues with the SATA drive continued however, so I ordered a new NVMe/PCIe to replace the failing hard drive. I completed the work on this just now - I disconnected and removed the old SATA drive. Low and behold, once again any action surrounding the SATA hard drive had caused my Windows boot to fail, and I had to once more reinstall Windows within 48 hours. So, with the removal of the SATA hard drive, I hope this problem has ceased (Unless... The NVMe itself is fubar?), so it is more of a matter of trying to determine why this had such a significant impact on my Windows boot drive. That is correct yes. I have disabled the "Group similar buttons" already, so instead of them being combined in one tile they're side-by-side now. However I want a bit more control still over them to control the individual buttons of each program Forgive my mad mouse skilllz on straight line or arrow creation So basically I want to move the Chrome buttons individually. So the middle "Forum" one I might want to shift to the end "Youtube" one.

Hi there - In every day life this isn't an issue for me, but when I am at work it is a bit annoying and I would like a bit more control over it. Is there any way to move INDIVIDUAL buttons/tiles on the taskbar? So for instance if you have two separate Chromes' open, if you tried to move the buttons on the taskbar by clicking one and dragging it - Both buttons/tiles would move systematically. I sometimes have more than two of the same programs running on the taskbar but I like to keep a certain order to work related tasks, but because there is no real control over it it's just frustrating. I imagine Windows 10 and 7 are almost identical, but work systems do use Windows 7.

Well, it was more of a glass TV table, so it had the TV on it, I connected the hard drive to the TV (If I recall..) and I placed it on the glass, which unbeknowst to me had static electricity built up from the TV and other eletrical devices. An error I won't ever forget in the future...! Sadly in my area the hardware stores are somewhat untrustworthy or just not that good. Past issues with them where they try to fleece customers for money over simple jobs! For instance trying to sell me a new motherboard instead of replacing a BIOS Chip, No effort put in at all!

I have (Had) a Seagate FreeAgent Go 250gb portable hard drive, I have had this several years. Sadly one day I was an idiot and my assumptions that glass tables do not conduct electricity was painfully incorrect, so much so that I ended up hearing a crackle when I placed the hard drive on said table. What made it even more painful was the fact I realised I had not backed the data up on the portable hard drive, and on my main computer I had completed a format and moved the data - A decision I regret clearly! This incident happened years ago, and each year I come back to it hoping that advancements in software can one day reunite me with any data I may have lost, but each year I become disappointed as I get further away from trying to rectify this, the belief that the data may still be housed on the hard drive makes me want to continue trying... I have cracked open the housing contained within the Seagate which has left me with just the hard drive, so I have hooked it up to a SATA Dock which is externally powered. My BIOS can recognise the hard drive, and so does Windows 10 (All various versions did also). In Windows 10 Disk Management it shows as "Disk 3, Unknown 232gb Not Initialised" and the bar is "Unallocated". If I click on Initialize Disk it wants me to partition the drive using MBR or GPT. I have not accepted neither option because I don't want to risk losing the data on the hard drive permanently. I have tried various data recovery software as well as various scans without any success. Partition Magic, Partition Wizard, HD Tune, Data Recovery Pro - None have been successful in repairing this. HD Tune states that "(C5) Current Pending Sector" has a warning status attached, the scan indicates that this has 100% Damaged Blocks. Realistically I don't know what else I can do, software seems to be not helping at all, the only thing I can think of is to send it off to a Data Recovery Centre, but for about 10gb of saved data that doesn't seem worthwhile and costly to boot. I am keeping the hard drive setup for a few more days again, so if you want me to try anything I can certainly go for it and hope for the best.

[BIOS] Asus Z170 Pro Gaming - Black screen

Update!! The BIOS chip arrived this afternoon, bent the pins to size and popped it in. Soon as the Asus splashscreen popped up, pressed F2 and it went straight into the BIOS! Happy days. My RAID was unaffected also so indeed i have kept all my data. Glad to have fixed this considering the time it has taken overall, still a bit wary for future useage of the BIOS now that i know it's not fail-safe i'll be more cautious that's for sure. -

Well bit of a bump to this since it's been little over a week, i conceded defeat last Monday and took it to one of the local computer shops in the area who took their time with it because one of the technicians was absent, i only got a response this afternoon from it. It seems they attempted to flash the BIOS and they had no success on it. Don't know how hard they tried overall but alas i'm picking it up come Monday. They said it's the motherboard that's gone but i just don't believe it since i'm getting POST. I suspect a BIOS chip could be the only reasonable way of sorting this out, but in the UK it looks like no places stock the BIOS chip on this Asus motherboard and they can only be shipped in from mainland Europe. This item was bought from eBay in September 2015, so essentially second hand, i have messaged the seller to see if he can perhaps send me a receipt or something so that i can get Asus to complete an RMA but i have had no reply yet and in fairness he is under no pressure to assist me. The only thing would be is to concede defeat entirely and buy a new motherboard. With Black Friday hitting now i could be very much in luck getting a new motherboard, but my only concern is losing data on my Raid 0 since i foolishly didn't back up my hard drives before i attempted the BIOS flash. -

I just noticed from my BIOS screen... the BIOS seems to have updated?? It still doesn't work mind, but it's still updated?? The revision number compared to the original image. It now shows as 2003 which is the latest BIOS revision for my motherboard, don't know when it happened but all the same i can't progress... -

I'll try giving Asus UK a call tomorrow to see if they can shed some light on this. Just for reference, since this BIOS seems to just need a jump-start to get it going, how can i "activate" the CrashFree BIOS? Does it come on automatically upon boot up because the DVD Support disc is in the DVD drive. I have opened the DVD on my laptop to look at the directories and i can see the "Z17PG.CAP" in the root folder of the DVD disc. Could i perhaps try making a DVD with just the BIOS file on it, will that perhaps cause the BIOS to run the file at boot up? Does the DVD drive need to be on a certain SATA port? I am running it on SATA-5, could changing to SATA-1 make it work? I'm using the USB 3.1 slot but tried others but it hasn't clicked either. -

That was going to be my absolute last option in regards to the BIOS chip. People have mentioned that since i'm getting that screen pictured, the board doesn't seem to be dead. Being the weekend the local computer shops aren't open today... Would you normally need an exact replica of your current BIOS chip? The one on mine is a Winbond 25Q128FV1Q / 1517... My old motherboard was an Asus P5K which i have up a lock up, could i perhaps take the BIOS off that one or would i need a brand new one? -

Unfortunately it doesn't :/. Seen documentation on that, would be really useful but there is no button to press at the back of the motherboard -
Hi, i am having quite a serious issue at the moment. I've tried several remedies but each time there is no difference to what happens.> >I accidentally forgot to re-name the BIOS file Z17PG.CAP when i tried updating the BIOS and since then i have not been able to get into the BIOS nor progress past POST.> >If i turn the PC off, if i turn it back on it will turn itself off and on 2-3 times before going to the POST screen. My keyboard will not respond to F8, DEL or F2. When i get to the POST screen it says press F1 to enter BIOS, as soon as i press F1 though i get black screened and i cannot progress. I have to restart.> >I have shorted the pins on the BIOS, taken out the CMOS battery, removed all the hard drives, removed my graphics card, used one memory slot but none of this has helped.> >I found a thread on TomsHardware about the exact issue i had http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-3063890/asus-z170-pro-gaming-bios-update-failure.html which was promising. Sadly this did not help either. I have used a VGA cable in the VGA port, but again no progress.> >It's stated this motherboard is has CrashFree 3 on it, so the BIOS shouldn't be totally gone and should be recoverable by use of a DVD supplied by Asus, and downloading the BIOS file to a USB thumb drive. I seem to be getting no joy out of my USBs - I have tried every port, USB2 and USB3 front and back.> >The only DVD i had supplied in the box was an "Asus Chipset Support DVD". I honestly don't know if this is the disc that is needed to boot the BIOS, but it's not working and i can't find a download link anywhere.> >I feel the only thing i haven't tried is to remove the BIOS chip and buy a new one, but that in itself i think carries its own risks.... > >Here is a recap of everything i have tried:> > Shorted Pins, removed CMOS battery for long periods Used low power USB keyboard F8/DEL/F2 do not respond Used VGA to VGA cable, connected to onboard graphics Formatted 4gb thumb drive to FAT32 and standard FAT Renamed single file Z17PG.CAP on thumb drive Used the supplied DVD (Which i think is not right DVD) "Asus Chipset Support" Removed all unnecessary devices - Graphics Card, hard drives, USB devices >Been without my PC for two days now trying to force this to work, feel as if i've run out of options unless i'm missing something glaring??> >Here is an image of the screen i get before i press F1 and get black screened:> >https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6EAPfTuq5gaNFBLUllQS2UzdEtWdm5NZkZnSUtZcFZyWFFn/view?usp=sharing> >Can someone please advise?

Hi all, i have a new build all setup now, but i've been going through the process of backing up, since i want to use RAID - I have never bothered with RAID before so the details of setting it up have been sketchy, but my understanding still isn't solid. But i know what i want - 2 of my 4 drives (Which are matching) to be setup under RAID0, while the rest are standard drives. I thought this was something that could be done, but during the EZ-Setup by Asus, it didn't seem all that easy to de-select the drives. Asus Z170 Pro Gaming (Latest BIOS) Corsair Force 3 SSD (120gb x2) - PREFERRED RAID0 Intel SA2CW080G3 SSD WD3200YS Hard drive The two Corsair SSD's are on SATA1/SATA2 so i thought i could just select them. It wasn't the case as during the EZ setup it wanted all 4 drives to be included which i didn't want. In the end, i thought i would do it, and all 4 drives were on RAID0. I did change my mind afterwards though and thankfully all my data on the other 3 drives were protected. I did see one of Linus' videos on RAID setup, one confusing thing i noticed was the lack of a SATA option within the Asus-BIOS it just wasn't there for me. Regardless though, i can't see any other way to setup RAID on just my Corsair SSDs?
