  1. I remembered the old song the other day and I've been trying to look it up. I think it was the outro song from years ago, with satellites and vocals talking about tech stuff. Anyone remember the name?

    Sorry for replying late.

If the RAM is working perfectly and a clean windows does nothing. Maybe check and reset your BIOS if you have some custom/overclock settings applied, or try booting a Linux distro from another drive.

I mentioned Linux as its quite stable, another drive cause I said, a faulty storage can cause such issues as well.

The only other obvious issue would be a incorrectly seated CPU, as the memory controller might not work as intended if not all the pins are in proper contact, that's a problem that I personally had before with a similar system actually (ROG 7 Ranger and 4770K).

Cleaning the components and re-plugging them one by one and testing at each phase helps identify the faulty component if there is any.

A faulty GPU can also cause display problems, since the 4790K got a iGPU you can unplug your GTX970 and try running the system using the HD4600, see if that does anything.

I would've said it might also be a compatibility issue but if the issue didn't start from day one its pretty hard to confirm.

Thanks, I'll look at reinstalling the cpu this week.

Still hoping someone on here knows the dump files well enough to take a look and help isolate the issue from the report.

Just to mention, BSOD doesn't really have to be from your memory or CPU, even if the BSOD error code says so, windows is just crap, also increasing or decreasing the page file does nothing.

If you believe its the RAM you can try memtest86 or the built in windows memory diagnose tool, set it to full scan or whatever they call that option and let it run, although I prefer memtest86.
Removing the memory sticks and trying them one by one can help identify the faulty stick if there is any.

If you suspect its just windows being windows you can try booting a linux distro from a USB stick, and try browsing, and doing regular stuff and see if it crashes or not.
It can also be a faulty driver, or windows messing with drivers or something, if the linux distro goes all well, a fresh install of windows might do the trick.

I do recommend you try the memory test and linux distro first before attempting to play with the hardware, if the issue still persists, try resetting your bios, unplug everything maybe clean the components, check if the CPU is seated well as it can lead to some memory issues, and try again.

Another thing that might cause a BSOD is a faulty hard drive, as some windows components might be broken or missing.

My apologies I can't view the dump you provided Im not on my personal computer, but you can check what I mentioned above.

Report attached but it passed three full sets of memtest 86 with no failures. Debating a full clean install but it didn't help last time.

  4. Good day,

I've been having a problem for months and it has finally driving me to seek help since my troubleshooting skills have been exhausted.

I've been getting BSOD, and while I think it's due to system memory or cpu load I'm not sure.

I did increase the page file size to 1.5 times my ram (4X4 GB corsair vengeance pro blue) recently to no noticeable effect.

I've been holding off upgrading the cpu/motherboard and the GPU until another generation or so, but if it's a problem with one of those I guess I'll pony up the money. I just need to know where the problem lies.

Thanks in advance for the help!

It's a pretty significant jump. I didn't want to upgrade either but it's certainly worth it to go DDR4. Also you're going to need to upgrade EVENTUALLY. Just watch for deals on RAM because the prices have been pretty expensive. I mean you don't need to go totally crazy and get a i9-9900k, but you'd absolutely notice like an 8600k, and that would last you quite a while.

so youre saying buy a new mobo, upgrade cpu and ram, what about the cooling? would this same problem persist with my 212 evo? could it just be my 212 is showing its age and a new one would work or do I need to go AIO even with the new mobo/gear?

  6. Was running metro and almost caught a screen cap of it stuttering and the temp screen, two cores were at 92 deg.

Edit : after recovery started hardware monitor right away and one core was at 96. Before it crashed again.

Going to let it cool, but I'd say I've found the culprit. Now the question is would ordering some new thermal compound work, do I order a aio or other cooler, or do I pay a lot to upgrade the mobo, ram, CPU and eventually GPU?

Kind of wanted to wait one more generation

  7. Hello,

I've had a bunch of problems lately, from two of my CPU's fans failing (original hyper x 212 evo fan and an arctic pwm one I bought as a replacement) to issues with my ram (not registering if not plugged in a specific order, even though its two sets of vengeance pro blue 1600 mhc (ver 1.51 and 1.8X I believe)

The latest issue seems to be my cpu overheating even with the cooler master fan I just replaced on the 212's tower in a pull config (Ram is too big to allow push :(). It's even a Cooler Master DC fan that's running at high RPM all the time so it should be sufficient. Should I try to redo the thermal paste?

I'm running at 4790k with a 970 Strix on an ASUS Z97 A, and I'm thinking the cpu temp might be the reason it's crashing lately while multitasking to playing games. (occasional BSOD, mostly a stutter and crash) It's reaching 66 degrees while only running a game and some tabs in a browser, hard to tell while gaming.

    A. Are there any utilities that track not only current temp but record max temp so that I can look at a report and see if this is the cause? I've used hardware monitor but it doesn't seem to log temps.

    B. I've been thinking about trying to overclock, but with this issue I'm not sure if my cooling is sufficient. Any recommendations on a better cooling setup if required? Apparently hyperx 212 evo should be more than sufficient to run a small OC on a 4790k.

I've been debating upgrading my MOBO for ddr4 ram and a better cpu, but It doesn't seem like there's any huge jump if all I'm trying to do is play games.

    Thanks in advance,

P.S. Obviously the fan was bought as it was cheap to test, not to RGB match with the RAM.

Edit 1. Build was in 2016, I believe CPU heat sink was taken apart once my a tech to clean it after a spill, nothing other than that.

So, as everyone suggested, double your ram amount. But, even though you got a decent air cooler, could you please check and report back the temperatures you get in gaming and multitasking in general.

CPU (4790K) 4.38 GHz 1.209 V (no OC, should I look at OC?)

Max 75 (Gaming and watching youtube (Assassin's creed origins benchmark run)

GPU (Strix 970) 1114 MHz (default clock) 1253 MHz BoostShould I OC?

    Max 68 (Same as above)

  9. I have just moved into a new house. and my desk and PC are now downstairs. I am looking to be able to connect my Toshiba 47L7200 via Wireless HDMI to my PC, so I can use it in my bedroom to connect to my gaming PC. Are there any suggestions as to a keyboard setup, WiFi or bluetooth (class 1?) , that will be able to go through drywall to a range of approx 30'.

If there are any ideas for a better way to run this setup please let me know.
