  1. I really don't know AMD cpus very well, any advice on something that's similar to the e3 1230v6 (my bad for saying v5). Potentially a stupid question but do all AMD support ecc? I did look at going old second hand cpus but finding an affordable motherboard with pcie slots so i can use it as a HTPC and install TVtuner was difficult.
  2. Question: Is this overkill/underkill hardware for my uses. Is there a better build for the price? Uses: NAS, NVR (~4 cams), Plex, simple website/ databse usage, simple servers, contacts/calender. HTPC/transmission daemon (running in vm with VPN). tvheadend tv recording Cost ~$1700 Hardware case Corsair cc-9011030-WW carbide series air 540 atx high airflow (is there anything better than this) intel xeon e3-1230v5 asus p10s-m WS board 750w power supply 1200watt UPS (do i need this?) 16GB ecc ddr 4 kington KVR24E17D8 noctua NH-D14, Premium CPU Cooler with Dual NF-P14 and NF-P12 Fans (Brown) Asus nvideia PH-GT1030-02G 4x3tb WD NAS HDD Cheap SSD for boot. a pcie dvb-t2 card (undecided on this so far)
  3. Hi I'm looking to build a home server and need some help selecting a CPU for the following uses: File sharing/NAS (smb, afp, ftp, webdav), planning 4x2tb in raid 5 (software raid) HTPC in virtual machine with GPU passthrough Apache with server monitoring software and online calendar Small home email server mumble server small game servers from time to time. tv tuner card to turn dvb-t into iptv and also remote tv recording. ideally enough computing power left over to run the odd extra test vm from time to time. features added in future Use as NVR using zoneminder no more than 8 cameras. My budget is ideally £700-£1000 (~$894-$1276) First question is xeon worth it for my usages (ecc, virtualisation)? Second question (assuming yes to 1.) Am i better off going for something like a brand new e3-1220v5 or an old e5 for the higher core count? Any help will be greatly appreciated. I've struggled to understanding how to compare xeons (and CPU's in general tbh), any advice on where to learn is also appreciated.
  4. Hi I need some advice on choosing a xeon (or alternative if there's a more appropraite one) I should be fine selecting all other components other than CPU based on my needs, (i.e ECC RAM, graphics card that can handle 4k for htpc vm passthrough, tv tuner card for remote recording and one extra pcie for potential extra nic in future) but I don't know what CPU is appropraite. Here's what I would like to use the server for. Generally a home server with the following "standard" home server features and then a few extras. I've already decided i'll probably run debian just because im familiar using it. NAS (using 2x4tb HDD in raid 5) over SMB FTP VPN Website for system status information, online calender and a tv guide for tv tuner. TVheadend service small home email system (for me to learn how to set it up likely wont be used much) small encrypted chat server using matrix and riot. Virtual machine likely using KVM (also debian) as a htpc connected to a vpn. Run kodi and also run transmission daemon on this and use reverse proxy to access it using host apache. Game servers (minecraft, World of Warcraft emulators) Potential for another windows or linux vm but this will be for testing and not on all the time. I dont know too much about xeons. Is it better to go for an old used chip that might be more powerful or a new chip but less powerful for the price? Ideally I want the whole build of under £700, but I'm beginning to think it's going to be more like £1000. Any suggestions on Xeons or where I can learn more about them to make the decision myself will be greatly appreciated.
  5. Any opinions on this so far? I don't really have a reference point. In your opinions is this overkill/underkill or spot on? CPU: Xeon E3 1220v5 Motherboard: ASUS P10S-X P10S-X (wanted one with HDMI but seems most servers dont, which makes sense) RAM: any ecc 2x8gb PSU: 600watt allowing for expansion (i.e TV tuner, cheap graphics card) 4x2tb NAS HDD UPS:APC Back-UPS BX - Uninterruptible Power Supply 1400VA.
  6. Thanks again for explaining. That makes sense. Honestly I don't understand xeons thats the part I'm really struggling with, any suggestions on where i could learn. The only other criteria I have is I'd like a few PCIE slots on the motherboard for potentially adding 10gb nic and a tv tuner in the future. The big restriction seems to be, as always the cost. I'm beginning to think my budget is far too low for what I'm looking for. I initially planned around £750 (currently roughly $925), but the HDD alone are going to set me back at least £250 leaving £500 for motherboard, CPU, RAM, powersupply and a PSU (i already have a boot drive) which seems unlikely.
  7. Thanks for the replies, helped a lot! I'm new to buying server gear and struggling to find a CPU for my needs. Any suggestions on what Xeon to get (ideally built in Graphics to save me some ££ on a card) Or are there any sites you recommend i look at to learn what xeon would be right for my build. I'm struggling to balance age of CPU with price. Also are there any sites you recommend to getting some good deals or is ebay my only friend? I don't mind getting a prebuilt and tweaking/altering it but I don't really want an off the shelf prebuilt. I enjoy the building/altering, unless it's more expensive which it rarely seems to be. By HTPC I pretty much meant a kodi box. Nothing more than a raspi worth of load (what im currently using) so not too worried about that. Also @Boomwebsearch is there a reason you suggested running the "HTPC" in a virtual machine rather than just loading a gui on the server os itself, is there a reason that would be a bad idea? Or were you guessing I wanted that running on a different OS or something?
  8. Hi I'm new to the forum so apologies if this is in the wrong section. Let me know if it should be else where. What I want: File sharing (samba, afp, ftp) fast but affordable (so gigabit but not 10) torrent downloader (running in a virtual machine with a VPN). virtual machine capabilities for general messing around with new OS's and server OS's The odd game server (wow emulators) NVR for simple POE home security system. HTPC 4k capable (no need to game) to stream locally stored content as well as stream. Current potential plans: 1. All in one server running Debian. 4x2TB HDD as NAS raid 5, another HDD for NVR, and a boot SSD. A long HDMI cable to another room to the TV with kodi running. 2. A NAS (likely freenas) and seperate HTPC (likely debian) with one of them running the virtual machine for torrent downloading over VPN and also a NVR 3. Option 1 but with a raspi HTPC instead of long HDMI (can this handle 4k?). I'm looking for a solution around £700 (excluding security camera gear). Here are my questions: Which potential plan do you recommend or is there a better? What hardware would you recommend (i3? xeon? ECC ram?) How loud will 4x2tb HDD be? Could I put this server in a living room or would it be unbearable? A NAS designed HDD (WDD red) something I should get, are they worth the extra price? Would rack mounting be more or less expensive option?
  9. Just planning on building my first PC (high end gaming/learning overclocking): Intel i7 4790k 2x8gb ddr3 Cosair h100i (maybe gtx) I'm not sure on motherboard (ddr3 board though) I'm thinking Asus maximus vii hero is that a good choice?! 750watt power supply (enough?) However my main question is how do I decide between brands of 6gb gtx 980 ti. I was thinking gigabyte but i don't really have a reason.
