  1. #1: I don't pay for power where I'm at (thankfully) #2: "SETI doesn't work" -- (1) the automatic answer is no if I don't try, and (2) if I may quote a little Shakespeare in response: Hamlet: Swear by my sword Never to speak of this that you have heard. Ghost: [ Beneath ] Swear by his sword. Hamlet: Well said, old mole, canst work i' th' earth so fast? A worthy pioner! Once more remove, good friends. Horatio: O day and night, but this is wondrous strange! Hamlet: And therefore as a stranger give it welcome. There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy. Hamlet Act 1, scene 5, 159–167 [/indent] It looks like the Intel i7-5820K is the winner for me. Thanks for all the input to everyone who replied.
  2. I have determined that, as a Christmas gift to myself, I am going to build another system (a minimal one) with only one purpose - to chew through the SETI@Home work units. It's whole existence will be to consume power, produce heaps of heat and go full tilt 24 hours a day ad infinitum, just because it makes me smile. And yes, I'll have it overclocked to just one millimetre before the entire thing bursts into flames. Total budget hopefully won't exceed $2000 CAD and will consist of a test bench, motherboard, CPU, RAM, AiO CPU cooler. I have no plans to add a video card, however I am open to comments on this. So really I'm trying to decide between: Option 1: Asus Sabertooth Z170 Mark 1 & Intel 6700K CPU https://www.asus.com/ca-en/Motherboards/SABERTOOTH-Z170-MARK-1/ http://ark.intel.com/products/88195/Intel-Core-i7-6700K-Processor-8M-Cache-up-to-4_20-GHz Option 2: Asus X99-Deluxe & Intel Core i7-5930K https://www.asus.com/ca-en/Motherboards/X99DELUXE/ http://ark.intel.com/products/82931/Intel-Core-i7-5930K-Processor-15M-Cache-up-to-3_70-GHz As to the RAM, is there any suggestions one way or the other? I really don't know anything about what type of RAM would be best (or most cost-effective). Also, if anyone knows of cool test benches, I'd be interested in that as well. Thanks all.
  3. More questions I have for those wiser and more experienced than I relating to my first attempt at any kind of water cooling for my system. Personally the Swifttech H-240X Liquid Cooling kit seems like the perfect place for me to start however I don't know why but it is no longer available (or not available in my Country), so an assemblage of parts it will have to be (or an equal expandable All-in-One kit). Specifically I would like to start with just cooling my CPU (LGA1150 socket; i7 4970K) with an eye towards adding water blocks for my dual Titan X's at some future point - OR doing it now if the parts can be sourced. I don't have an upper budget set for the cooling componants though I am looking for the best (most efficient) I can get a hold of PLUS I very much want a white aesthetic to match the rest of my build (Asus Sabertooth Z97 mobo with it's SEXY arctic white camo!). I don't know if white is even available for any CPU or GPU waterblocks though. (hope springs eternal) The parts I've mostly settled on (but feel free to suggest alternates): Pump: Swiftech MCP655 Radiator: undecided (240mm, Copper fins preferred) Reservoir: undecided (probably a dual 5-1/4" optical drive bay but those cylendrical ones looks pretty cool too Fluid: no idea however I plan to OC the hardware to the maximum so a fluid which transfers the most heat would be best (I assume) Thanks in advance for any comments or suggestions.
  4. Sometimes all I need to make the breakthrough is a little push. I asked and I received. That Crucial Ballistix Tactical Tracer RAM is just exacrly the ticket for me - thank you HEXiT! Plus my very own 4790K CPU is on it's way to me already - thank you Nena360! In case anyone's interested, I'm also going for the Asus Sabertooth Mark S motherboard. Be well everyone!
  5. Hello Everyone! I'm a new member and this is my first post to the forum. Preamble: I stumbled upon Linus Sebastian and his channels on YouTube when I decided a few months ago that it is again time for me to build my next system (I do this about every 10-ish years). Incredible how helpful and clear Linus and his team are - made my achievement of understanding of what's currently out there, hardware-wise so much easier. Thank you. Neither Here-Nor-There: I watched the multi-part video of the whole room cooling and well... it sure was entertaining! Kudos to Linus for keeping such a positive attitude (atleast on camera) throughout what looked to be a rather chaos-inducing process. The only part that surprised me was that if Linus' dad is a plumber that he didn't help by figuring out beforehand the optimal flow rates and pressures that should have been achieved (and then solder in sensors in the copper loop to confirm correct function. That's just me though and I'm the peanut gallery. The Primary Point of my Post: I've acquired some of the hardware already, I've also (mostly) settled on other pieces of the hardware, and then there's the few pieces that I really don't know how to choose and it's getting quite frustrating. Especially since I've already dedicated myself to migrating to Windows 10 as soon as I can (on my existing box). I have the thought that I don't want to acquire much more hardware until post-Windows10 release just to make certain of compliancy. I dunno on that though. The inevitable, "What are you going to use your system for?" before parts recomendations come. Well, how's this for my answer: Everything. I want my box to be able to do any task I set to it, [reasonably] quickly and [reasonably] efficiently no matter what. Yes, sometimes I do 3-D rendering (acad), yes to video encoding, yes to running apache and other heavy services, yes to heavy compression file usage (7z; rar), yes to gaming. But not (usually) all at once. I want my new box to do it all and I know that all it takes it money and knowledge. So I'm looking for the optimum balance. Plus I do very much enjoy continual expansion. For reference, once the new sytem is built, I'll be migrating a total of 26 external USB drives to it, so definitely maxing out on the USB 2.0/3.0 connections is prudent. A) Already acquired: Corsair C70 Mid-Tower case [Part#: CC-9011019-WW] Corsair AX1200i PSU [Part#: CP-9020008-NA] EVGA Geforce Titan X video card [Part#: 12G-P4-2990-KR] Acer B286HK Ymjdpprz 28IN 4K UHD [Part#: UM.PB6AA.003] x 3 monitors Corsair SP120 PWM fans [Part#: CO-9050014-WW] x 3 (dual packs) B ) Settled on (mostly) but not yet purchased: Corsair Cooling Hydro Series H100I GTX CPU Cooler System [Part#: CW-9060021-WW] C) Driving me nuts because I can't decide: CPU After much internal debate I'm defaulting to the Intel side for the CPU I7-5820K 3.3GHZ or I7-4790K 4.0GHZ or ?? It seems wise to me that the CPU should have as many cores as can be afforded. Again, I dunno Motherboard Asus seems to be the best choice but this is the one piece of hardware that I am really struggling with. ASUS Rampage V Extreme ?? Some of the ROG mobos look really appealing - those OC profiles seem pretty cool DIMMs I care less about the actual memory rather than my strong preference for RAM that lights up with LED's or other, especially if they can change color and especially if they can be programmed into custom lighting patterns. Does this exist? I have had exactly no luck with finding any quality information on this subject. Audio This one's a toughie for me. If any recommendations come on this one, only a note that there's no need of anything headphones-related for the card to do for my setup. Optical in and outs would be useful. Multple line in's would also be a very good thing too. Now, I just can't help but be a tinkerer and so overclocking ability is a must, along with OCD-level fan control, temperature/airflow sensors. The more widgets I can play with, the happier I am. To summarize what my new box needs to be comes down to two words: Bragging Rights. I work with a bunch of very smart, very geeky people whom I really want to make nerd-out to the maximum, and plus it'll still be a highly efficient and sexy tool for me to use too. I appreciate any responses that may come. I'm in Canada and I have no specified budget other than, OMG that's expensive! Hopefully I can get a motherboard and CPU for under $1000, but if it's over, well, then it's over. As long as it's tailored to my situation, what's a few more nickels?
