  1. Hello, I am looking to build a SFF NAS with 4 to 6 drives capacity with a processor capable of transcoding media for a Plex server. It should be able to handle 4K HDR media (H264 and H265). It should be sized as small as possible, like the size of a Synology NAS. It should run FreeNAS or Unraid with Plex plugin, maybe some virtualization too My guesses are: - I should be using a Mini ITX or Micro ATX server grade motherboard, like a Supermicro or ASUS WS boards. - I should be using a Xeon processor with hardware accelerated transcoding. (Im not sure about Threadripper compatibility with FreeNAS or Unraid) - I will use WD Red drives or HGST drives - 1 GB of memory per TB of storage Im pretty sure the hardest thing to find is a nice looking small case like the Synology servers have. Any ideas of a good Motherboard, CPU and case combo for this use case?
  2. Mmm, maybe I can return it to Amazon. Any Z170 motherboard recommendation? Under USD 200
  3. Hello guys, I have recently built my new computer with the following hardware: The motherboard has a Realtek ALC1150 audio chip. The problem I am having is that just after any OS boots up, I can hear electronic noise and eventually some pop when using my headset. When I move the mouse I can hear some squealing noise added to the static noise, and when I change applications I can hear the pops. If I connect the headset to the front panel connectors, I can't hear any noise, but for some reason the mic does not work, even with the maximum mic boost, it's almost impossible to hear what I say when connecting the mic to the front panel. What I have tried so far: - Clean OS reinstall - BIOS update - Driver updates - Ubuntu Linux Live Disk - Muting all audio sources but audio out and mic in - Running the system outside of the case (just the motherboard on a cardboard piece from the motherboard box) and with a different PSU (Corsair TX750) - Running the system without the graphics card None of all what I have tried gave me any noise reduction. The only thing that noticeably reduced the noise was the following: - Disabling Intel EIST - Disabling C1E, C3, C5, C7, C9 (all C states) - Setting the CPU VCore fixed to 1.280V After doing those changes almost all noise is gone, but I can hear some faint squealing when moving the mouse. Cons for this: CPU always running at 4 Ghz increasing temperatures a bit and possibly reducing the CPU life. I would like to know what may be the cause of this noise, and if it's a good reason to RMA the motherboard, or if I will possibly encounter the same issue with a replacement motherboard. EDIT: I was able to record the noise and attached it so you can hear the nose I am talking about. Thank you! ruidos-realtek.m4a
  4. Well, I guess I should wait for Skylake, even though i7-5820K is tempting me, it looks better for a Workstation oriented PC I will compare Z170 vs X99 features
  5. Hello guys, I am currently running my pretty old PC with an i7-920, ASUS P6T and GTX 470. I think it's time to upgrade, but I want to know if it's worth to wait for the i7-6700k skylake processor or if there wouldnt be a significant improvement from the i7-4790k. Take into consideration that the PC will not only be used for gaming, but for software development, video transcoding and streaming, so I guess the IGP is helpful for this stuff. For discrete graphics, I am planning to buy a GTX 970, and for motherboard chipset a Z170 or Z97 depending on the processor. So is it worth to wait a few months to get the newest skylake processor in my use case scenario? Thank you!
