  1. Hello, I've designed a build that I feel will be suitable for 1080p 144hz gaming, and some pretty heavy video editing, for the budget of $3000 Canadian, now, although I have my build already designed, I'm 100% open to criticisms, suggestions, changes, or even complete new builds., so long as they fit into this budget of course, so, here is my designed build, with the reason why I chose the parts I chose: PCPartPicker part list: http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/4wjfjX Price breakdown by merchant: http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/4wjfjX/by_merchant/ CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor ($417.25 @ shopRBC) --Solid 4 core, hyperthreaded CPU that offers excellent productivity performance while also being an excellent CPU for gaming. CPU Cooler: Corsair H105 73.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler ($117.67 @ DirectCanada) --A solid AOI water cooling loop that should allow me to reach a pretty high overclock on my CPU, and even if my cards a dud, it will at least keep it extremely cool. Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z97X-Gaming 5 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($158.98 @ Newegg Canada) --Just a solid motherboard from a pretty reputable brand that matches the red and black colour scheme i'm going for, while also having all the features I want/need. Memory: G.Skill Sniper Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-2133 Memory ($150.98 @ Newegg Canada) --16GB of high speed DDR3 memory, for enhanced multitasking ability while also being more than capable of performing well during periods of heavy rendering. Storage: Corsair Force LX Series 256GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($139.95 @ DirectCanada) --Main boot drive and essential programs, will run in RAID 0 with the other SSD, with a partition to be used as a scratch dick and the other as high speed storage for essential programs and files. Storage: Corsair Force LX Series 256GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($139.95 @ DirectCanada) -_See above ^ Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($64.95 @ Vuugo) --Games library drive, wanted it to be seperate from my main drive as drive failure is a real hazard. Storage: Seagate Barracuda 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($92.95 @ Vuugo) --Just a simple 2TB drive for mass media storage, and as my SSD Raid 0 backup drive. Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 980 4GB Twin Frozr Video Card ($689.99 @ NCIX) --One of the better cooler designs for the GTX 980, while also matching my colour scheme, and being a GTX 980, should allow me to max out most games at 1080p, and run them at higher than 60fps, which is why I got a 144hz monitor, so I can utilise out the 980's full potential. Case: NZXT H440 (Black/Red) ATX Mid Tower Case ($134.98 @ Amazon Canada) --I really like the look of this case, and, being red and black means it matches my colour scheme as well. Power Supply: SeaSonic EVO Edition 750W 80+ Bronze Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply ($110.87 @ DirectCanada) --I actually have no clue about the power supply, I just heard SeaSonic makes great power supplies and that's about it. Monitor: Acer GN246HL 144Hz 24.0" Monitor ($267.50 @ Vuugo) --Good looking, maybe not the best monitor, but has a 1ms response time and a 144hz refresh rate. Keyboard: Corsair K70 RGB Wired Gaming Keyboard ($189.98 @ DirectCanada) --Great keyboard with Cherry MX Browns, i'm planning on doing some cool stuff with the RGB backlighting. Mouse: Corsair M65 RGB Wired Laser Mouse ($79.99 @ Canada Computers) --Figured i'd stick with the Corsair M65 as it fits into my colour scheme and also has full RGB capabilities. Headphones: Audio-Technica M50x Headphones ($199.00 @ NCIX) --As far as i've heard, a simply amazing pair of headphones, these have been recommended to me numerous times. Total: $2954.99 Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available Generated by PCPartPicker 2015-04-08 16:05 EDT-0400
  2. Hello, my name is Username38, or Cameron, as people tend to call me. I am in the market for a brand spanking new computer, and after lurking through several threads here on Linus Tech Tips, I've decided that it would be much more cost effective to simply build my own PC rather than buying a prebuild, and so, I am here. Budget and Location: I have a budget of $3000 Canadian, and am located in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. Aim: The aim of this build is to be a sort of a jack of all trades PC, with the budget of $3000, I'd imagine you'll all have no trouble picking parts for my build. Mainly however, I would like this build to revolve around 1080p gaming, recording and rendering my gameplay, and just having a smooth overall computing experience. Monitors: This build must include two 1080p monitors, one with at most a 2ms response time, and one IPS panel for doing productivity work. I'm not planning on upgrading to any more monitors than that, so I should be alright. Peripherals: This build must also include all peripherals, which means: -A good mouse (I've had my eye on the Corsair M65 RGB, but your build doesn't have to follow this.) -A good keyboard (I've had my eye on the Corsair K70 RGB with Cherry MX Browns, same as above, your build doesn't have to use this.) -And lastly, a good pair of closed headphones. Why am I upgrading: I am upgrading because for all my life I've been stuck to console gaming, and I wish to upgrade myself into the world of PC gaming, of which my current laptop is not capable (I get less than 40fps on Minecraft with the lowest setting +Optifine +Fastcraft) and, I will need an upgraded PC soon for potential career paths that may require the computing performance of a high tech computer.
  3. It's just $2500 Canadian
  4. Any specific reason why? I mean i'm sure it has a worse OEM than the G2/P2 line, but does it really justify the price increase from the Nex?
  5. I've designed three builds that I feel will completely dominate the 1080p ultra gaming market for the budget of $2500, but i'd also like to do some video editing and rendering for a youtube channel, so i'm wondering which one will better suit the entire experience, in my mind, it's gaming first, recording and rendering second, but I want to know which build will be better for the future, and why. But, without further reading, here are my builds: Build A (Editing Focused): http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/tqNKRB Build B (Gaming Focused): http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/9LyjCJ Or Build C (A solid mix): http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/kCC7Hx I'd just like to jump in once again, and say that Build C is my preferred choice as of this moment, but I 100% encourage you to design your own builds as well if you feel like they trump mine, but alas, thank you in advance --Username38
  6. I don't see why I would, apart from the increased warranty, the WD Black drives aren't nearly that much faster than any other drive to warrant such an increased price.
  7. So I've designed a 1080p Ultra gaming rig, that doubles as a video recording/editing station, but i'm not sure how well all the parts work together, and I'm interested in reading alternate builds designed by you guys, but if you do design a build, make sure it include a 1080p monitor, a mech keyboard with Cherry MX Blues/Browns, a mouse, and a good headset that fits into my $2500 Canadian budget. So, without further adieu, my designed build: PCPartPicker part list: http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/kCC7Hx Price breakdown by merchant: http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/kCC7Hx/by_merchant/ CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor ($417.25 @ shopRBC) CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Seidon 240M 86.2 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler ($108.98 @ Newegg Canada) Motherboard: MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($152.06 @ Amazon Canada) Memory: Kingston Fury Black Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($143.23 @ DirectCanada) Storage: Corsair Force LS 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($74.99 @ Memory Express) Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($64.95 @ Vuugo) Storage: Seagate Barracuda 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($92.98 @ DirectCanada) Video Card: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 4GB WINDFORCE 3X Video Card ($413.95 @ Vuugo) Case: NZXT H440 (Black/Red) ATX Mid Tower Case ($134.98 @ Amazon Canada) Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA NEX 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply ($99.99 @ NCIX) Monitor: BenQ RL2755HM 60Hz 27.0" Monitor ($299.98 @ Amazon Canada) Keyboard: Corsair Vengeance K70 Wired Gaming Keyboard ($129.99 @ Memory Express) Mouse: Corsair M65 RGB Wired Laser Mouse ($79.98 @ DirectCanada) Headphones: Audio-Technica M50x Headphones ($199.00 @ NCIX) Other: Antlion ModMic v4 Mutable ($61.99) Total: $2474.30 Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available Generated by PCPartPicker 2015-04-06 22:05 EDT-0400
  8. I really appreciate all the quick replies, I've made something myself that's slighly over budget, but it tends to include the same parts as many of your suggestions, so here's what i've designed: PCPartPicker part list: http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/Rhtvcf Price breakdown by merchant: http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/Rhtvcf/by_merchant/ CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor ($415.00 @ Canada Computers) CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Seidon 240M 86.2 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler ($108.98 @ Newegg Canada) Motherboard: MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($152.06 @ Amazon Canada) Memory: Kingston Fury Black Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($143.23 @ DirectCanada) Storage: Corsair Force LS 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($74.99 @ Memory Express) Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($64.95 @ Vuugo) Storage: Seagate Barracuda 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($92.98 @ DirectCanada) Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 980 4GB Twin Frozr Video Card ($669.98 @ Newegg Canada) Case: NZXT H440 (Black/Red) ATX Mid Tower Case ($134.98 @ Amazon Canada) Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA NEX 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply ($99.99 @ NCIX) Monitor: Acer GN246HL 144Hz 24.0" Monitor ($267.50 @ Vuugo) Keyboard: Corsair Vengeance K70 Wired Gaming Keyboard ($129.99 @ Memory Express) Mouse: Corsair M65 RGB Wired Laser Mouse ($79.98 @ DirectCanada) Headphones: Kingston HyperX Cloud Pro Headset ($78.98 @ DirectCanada) Total: $2513.59 Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available Generated by PCPartPicker 2015-04-06 16:24 EDT-0400
  9. I'm in the market for a new PC< and I figured building one would be much cheaper than buying a prebuilt. So i've come here, to the Linus Tech Tips forum to ask for help. But I figure i'll follow the predetermined guide so, here goes: Budget: My budget is $2500 Canadian, and of course I live in Canada, Ontario to be more specific. Aim: My aim for this build is to get excellent productivity speeds, but more importantly is to be able to game at 1080p ultra at 144hz, now I understand that this wont be possible on every game, but I'll be willing to turn a few settings down to accommodate for it. Peripherals: I know I skipped monitors but that's because i'm including it here, I need all peripherals with this build, i.e. a mouse, a mechanical keyboard (Cherry MX Blues/Browns), a decent pair of headphones, and a 1080p 144hz monitor with a sub 3ms response time. Why am I upgrading: I am upgrading because I genuinely want to be able to delve into the world of PC gaming, while also having a PC that will be suitable for work related things, and rendering video for my YouTube channel. Unfortunately, my current laptop, which is my only computer, can barely run Minecraft at 30fps, so my options are quite limited in terms of my current computing potential, and that's exactly why I wish to upgrade. Well, after all of that, I suppose all I can do is inform you that I have no brand preferences, I just want the best bang for my buck, and good luck to those who make me a build, Thank you all in advance!
  10. I appreciate your quick reply! I will be upgrading to a second monitor later that will have an IPS panel, and that will be my main working monitor, and i'll leave the other one for gaming and watching videos. I'm not 100% sure how good the warranty is on the SSD, but i've seen RAM from Patriot that was cheap with a lifetime warranty, so i'm hoping this is the same kind of situation.
  11. I was just worried that a single 970 wouldn't be able to actually achieve the 144 fps in most games, but if I can fit a SLI 970 setup into my build, I should have no problems.
  12. I've designed a build focused around 1080p ultra gaming at 144hz. I believe it will work well, but as with all things there's always room for improvement, and as such I'm not entirely sure on my choice of parts, and so I came here, to the lovely LinusTechTips forum, for advice, suggestions, and comments. If you wish to make changes, make sure it fits into my $2500 Canadian build, and includes all peripherals (A Mech keyboard with Cherry MX Blues/Browns, a 1080p 144hz monitor, a solid mouse that doesn't look entirely gamer-y, and a decent pair of headphones). But alas, I present my designed build: **Warning: Wall of Text** PCPartPicker part list: http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/Py9gHx Price breakdown by merchant: http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/Py9gHx/by_merchant/ CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor ($415.00 @ Canada Computers) --Solid hyperthreaded CPU for enhanced productivity, and enhanced gaming performance once games become optimised for multiple cores. CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Seidon 240M 86.2 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler ($108.98 @ Newegg Canada) --Solid 240mm AOI liquid cooler, I'm not entirely sure but this should give me a little bit of overclocking headroom. Motherboard: MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($152.06 @ Amazon Canada) --I'm not entirely sold on this motherboard purchase either, I don't know much about MSI in terms of motherboards, but this one seems alright to me. Memory: Kingston Fury Black Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1866 Memory ($139.99 @ NCIX) --Just your standard 16GB kit of RAM, offers enhanced productivity speeds, and that's about it. Storage: Patriot Blaze 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($69.99 @ NCIX) --Boot drive, not too sure about this brand but Patriot tends to have amazing warranties anyway. Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($64.95 @ Vuugo) --Steam library and main game storage drive. Storage: Seagate Barracuda 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($92.98 @ DirectCanada) --Mass media storage drive. Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 980 4GB Twin Frozr Video Card ($649.99 @ NCIX) --Solid GTX 980 that fits in with my colour scheme, and I hear the Twin Frozr cooler is a great cooler as well. Case: NZXT H440 (Black/Red) ATX Mid Tower Case ($134.98 @ Amazon Canada) --Once again, a solid case from a reputable brand that fits my colour scheme. Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA NEX 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply ($99.99 @ NCIX) --Seemingly decent, 80+ gold certified fully modular power supply. Monitor: Acer GN246HL 144Hz 24.0" Monitor ($267.50 @ Vuugo) --I'm not too sure about this monitor, but it seems good for my purposes. Keyboard: Corsair Vengeance K70 Wired Gaming Keyboard ($129.99 @ Memory Express) --Solid keyboard with Cherry MX Brown switches, and red backlighting to match the rest of my build. Mouse: Corsair M65 RGB Wired Laser Mouse ($79.98 @ DirectCanada) --Just a solid mouse, and only 3$ more expensive than the Vengeance M65, so I feel it's a worthy upgrade. Headphones: Kingston HyperX Cloud Pro Headset ($78.98 @ DirectCanada) --Lastly, one of, if not the best pair of headphones available for under $100, comes with a detachable mic, and overall great sound quality. Total: $2485.36 Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available Generated by PCPartPicker 2015-04-05 20:57 EDT-0400
  13. I'm in the market for a new PC, and came across the idea of building my own, however, as a first time buyer and builder, I have no idea on what parts to choose, although I do know some of what I want. I'd likely want an i7 processor as it has hyperthreading and is much more efficient when dealing with productivity software, I'd prefer watercooling (albeit not custom), and I'll need all peripherals excluding a monitor, which means a keyboard with Cherry MX Brown (or Blue) switches, a decent mouse, preferably one that matches the colour scheme of the rest of the build (Your choice), and a solid pair of headphones. I know my list of demands is rather high, but I hope that you can do it and I wish you luck, I appreciate the help in advance, if you have any questions i'll be happy to answer them!
  14. Well now I feel conflicted, I suppose I'll just do some more research and see how things turn out. I appreciate your help though!
