  1. Ok great, thank you. I was just worries that having it boot using legacy would make it run in legacy forever. Like I said, I don't really understand this stuff yet, so figured I'd ask. Thanks for advice
  2. I made a fresh windows install usb and I have used it 2 times in the past so I know it works, including on a XPS 15. Didnt have any issues finding it in the boot menu. Now the only time I can see it/boot from it is if I have "secure boot" off and "legacy roms" option selected. So my question is if it matters if I boot it as "legacy"? Im not really 100% clear on the differences between the 2, but I know uefi is better. So yea, can I install windows using it as "legacy" or do I have to find a way to boot it as uefi? If I do have to boot as uefi, does anyone have any ideas what options I need to select to get the usb to register at the boot menu? Thanks for any advice p.s. I have a 2.5" sata ssd, and it came with "raid on" which I switched to "ahci", idk if that makes a difference.
  3. The ux430un actually has the normal version of the mx150, but its got stupid temp lock at 74 degrees where it throttles down to nothing GPU-Z Screenshot Thats why its so frustrating. vs 720s, ux331, etc... https://goo.gl/images/FwB9h1 Yea, Im probably just going with the Xiaomi Notebook Air. Ive been looking for weeks and the time Ive spent stressing over this stuff isnt worth the few hundred dollars I would save.
  4. Does anyone know which version of the mx150 is in the lenovo ideapad 720s? Someone said it was 8w, but on Lenono's question page it says 25w. https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-IdeaPad-100-305-500-Edge/720s-Graphics-Card/td-p/3878139 If it is the 8w, is this a hardware difference, or can it be changed in the BIOS? Thanks
  5. Well on the Lenovo page they answered it as 25w, but obvioulsy that doesnt mean a lot. If it is an 8w (i guess its a max-q version?) how much will that affect its performance? Is that something I can change it the BIOS? Or is it a hardware difference? Thanks https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-IdeaPad-100-305-500-Edge/720s-Graphics-Card/td-p/3878139
  6. Ive done way too much research, but Ive narrowed it down to just getting a budget one and seeing what happens in the next year or so with the rollout of new processors/seeing if amd can get its software act together. Anyway, this is what I've narrowed it down to (unless you have better deals...im hopeless) PLease tell me which one looks like the best deal for school (cis) and very light gaming. Obviously want the lightest, but willing to take a bit of extra weight if its worth. thanks a lot for any advice. cheers. -Lenovo ideapad 720s, 14.0" FHD IPS AntiGlare (1920x1080) , i5 8250u, mx150 (2gb), 256 ssd, 8GB DDR4, thunderbolt 3 (2 lane),12.60" x8.78" x0.63", 3.50 lbs. $800 ($850 for i7 8550u upgrade) -Acer swift 3 i5-8250U, mx150 (2gb), 8GB LPDDR3, 256GB SSD, 9.21 x 13.31 x 0.71 in, 3.75lbs $749 -Hp envy x360, i5-8250U, 12GB, 1TB 7200 hdd, MX150 (4gb), 14.16 x 9.8 x 0.77 in, 4.75 lb, $775 -Acer aspire 5, i7-8550, mx150 (2gb), 12gb (8gb dimm), 1TB 5400RPM + 256 ssd, 15.6" FHD Widescreen LED-backlit IPS (1920 x 1080) Display, 15.02"W x 10.35"D x .85"H, 4.85lbs, $800 -ASUS VivoBook S S510UN-EH76, i7 8550u, 8gb, 256ssd+ 1tb, 9.6 x 14.2 x 0.7 in, bezelless, 3.7 lbs, $900 -HP Pavilion Power 15t, GTX 1050 2gb, i7-7700HQ , 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD + 1TB HDD, 15.6-inch diagonal Full HD (1920x1080) IPS anti-glare WLED-backlit, (ram not upgradable), 14.88 x 9.93 x 0.95 in, 4lbs?, $740 --ASUS M580VD-EB54 VivoBook, i5-7300HQ, GTX 1050 2GB, 8GB DDR4, 256GB SSD, 5.1lbs, 10.1 x 15 x 0.8 in, $800 -Acer Aspire E 15, i5-8250U, MX150, 8GB Dual Channel Memory & 256GB SSD, 10.2 x 15.02 x 1.19 in, 5.27lbs , $600 (this last 2 are probably too heavy...)
  7. whats the difference between stealth pro and phantom pro? they seem almost identical
  8. There are quite a few new laptops with mx150 paired with the 8550u, but it took a bit of searching to find one that had a 7700 hq. I am pretty sure I want the 7700 as the games I play are more cpu intensive, but I just wanted to check in with you guys to make sure of some things. The i7-7700hq is better than the 8550u right? If thats the case, is there any sort of bottlenecking that would occur if I had the 7700hq + mx150? These are the two laptops. Thanks https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-i7-8550U-GeForce-E5-576G-81GD/dp/B075FLJ87G/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1519639698&sr=8-6&keywords=acer+aspire+5 https://www.amazon.com/MSI-PL62-7RC-001-Professional-i7-7700HQ/dp/B0721DVQ4Q?th=1 p.s. I know i can get a 1050 for a couple hundred more, but the biggest issue for me is weight, so for this price point, i think one of these is probably my best bet.
  9. For those that take their laptop to work, school etc everyday.... how much does your laptop weigh? Is it a pain to carry with you? Will you buy a lighter laptop next time? Any other thoughts advice on getting a laptop that you didnt think about? Thanks
  10. Need a gaming laptop and Ive done A LOT of looking around. I've found a pretty good deal 1060, 7700HQ under 6lbs for 800$. Should I spend another 500-600$ and "future proof" it? (Is getting a 1070 really even future proofing?) So basically, if I buy 1060, I'd expect to buy a new one in 2 years, if I bought 1070, Id expect it to last 3-4 years. Is that realistic? Anyway, I want to know what your experience has been. Have you ever bought a cheaper laptop and regretted not getting a nicer one? Have you bought a nice one and regretted it because you had to buy a new one in 2-3 years anyway? Does having more expensive laptop keep you from wanting to carry it around at all? (fear of breaking it, getting it stolen, etc?) Do you feel the difference between a 1060 and 1070 in everyday use, or will it just be in games? Any info, suggestions are greatly appreciated. Laptop requirements; My biggest concern is portability, I NEED it to be under 6lbs and WANT it to be under 5lbs. I want at least a 1060. And I need it to be able to run WOW at ultra at ~60fps in 20 man raids. Besides that, Im pretty flexible. I will be using it for school as well, so I will be carrying it around a lot. I dont really want to spend more than 1500$ on the high end.
  11. Thanks all, super helpful. So, to be clear, even if I am running a 4k display in 1080, it will consume more battery than a native 1080 display? Also, since this one doesnt specify IPS, does that mean it is probably TN? Its an ASUS ROG GL503VM, if that helps. 15.6" FHD (1920 x 1080) Matte Display
  12. There are 3 laptops that are basically the same price. Ive read a bit about it and most seem to think 4k is a waste on a 15.6" display, and mention problems with scaling also. Here are the 3 displays, all have a gtx 1060 6gb. 15.6" IPS Anti-Glare LED-Backlit FHD (1920 x 1080) Display or 15.6" IPS Anti-Glare LED-Backlit 4K Ultra HD (3840 x 2160) Display or 15.6" FHD (1920 x 1080) Matte Display my question is, if they are all the same price, could I buy the 4k and just run it in 1080 most of the time except if there were times I wanted to utilize the 4k? I dont really know much about displays, and ive had a really tough time finding the actual display models that are used in the laptops Im looking at besides little snippets like the 3 i put above. Anyway, any advice would be appreciated. P.S. what does LED-backlit mean? is that good or bad? is the 3rd option not backlit?
  13. I found, what I think is a pretty great deal. i5 7300hq 1060 6gb 256 GB SSD 1080 isp display 8gb ram 799$ (+tax) But I'm wondering, with the 8th gen cpu's coming out recently; will waiting a few months drive prices down? Will they start putting 8th gens in laptops with 1050ti and 1060, or only in higher end gaming latops. (I'd be willing to pay a few hundred more for the weight/battery life.) Also, what is the ryzen approx equivalent of an i5 7300/i7 7700 1050ti/1060 in laptops? (If its possible to compare) I don't really know anything about them, but need at least that kind of performance. Any advice appreciated Cheers
  14. So to start off, I mainly play wow, which i know people say is mainly a cpu intensive game. But since I installed it, i feel like I am not getting the performance I should be getting considering my hardware. For example I downloaded Heaven, ran the basic settings it starts up with (no anti-aliasing etc) at 1080p, and after a minute or so, I was hovering around 68 degrees and constantly hitting 1 on the power limit. Admittedly, I dont really know what i should be getting or what i should be looking for to see if there are any problems. So I'm looking for any advice, info, or directions to other resources where I can learn about these things and explained to me like I'm 5. Here are my specs. BTW, i used the DDU program to do a fresh install of the latest driver. Intel i5 4690 gtx 1060 6gb EVGA SC 16gb ddr3 1 TB hdd 256 GB ssd i have a proprietary dell mobo and 365w gold rated psu. Any resources you can give me to help me optimize my gpu would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
  15. weight is the main factor for me. i need it to be under 5 lbs.(i guess if you know some amazing deal and its 6 lbs, id consider it) 1050 or higher. everything else is pretty negotiable. here are some ive found hp pavilion 15/17 i5/i7 2.2 kg ~1000$ dell xps 15 i3/i5/i7 ~1000$ ***asus rog fx502vm i7-7700hq, 8gb, 128 gb ssd + 1tb hdd, 1050 w/4gb, 940$ 4.8lbs asus m580vd (eb54) i5-7300hq, 8gb, 256 ssd, 1050 2gb, fhd 1080 15.6, 5.1lbs the asus rog fx502vd seems to hit all the notes, anyone got a better deal than that? thanks
  16. ok well im assuming since no one brought up any issues, getting a new mobo will get me out of any proprietary restrictions. is there any reason i cant go with a mini itx if i just want to run 1 gpu and my set up? or is it better just to go micro? any suggestions? is the 4690 outdated enough to where i should seriously consider replacing it with a newer one? it seems to still have a decent reputation when i look around on google...
  17. i actually bought the adapter, but its just a homemade job and I dont want the hassle of worrying about the pc getting the right wattage. Anyway, I just wanted to make sure that getting a new mobo will be sufficient, and I dont have to buy anything else. Any suggestions for a mobo? I cant oc, but would be willing to spend a bit extra to get a mobo capable of oc'ing in case i upgrade cpu in future. Also would like the form to be as small as possible. Thanks
  18. I have a dell t1700 mini tower. it came stock with; i5 4690 2x 8gb ram barracuda 500gb ssd 1tb hdd optical drive 365w gold rated psu and i added a evga sc 1060 6gb (single fan, but its still pretty big) spec sheet: support/manuals/mr/en/mrbiz1/precision-t1700-workstation/prect1700mt-v1/specifications?guid=guid-898e7752-4bb3-4e57-8251-51ae26dd6158&lan my issue is i want to upgrade psu, but since its a dell, it has a proprietary mobo which has a weird 6 pin connection for the psu. not sure if everything else is the same or what. anyway, my question is, if i buy a new mobo and psu, (and case?) will everything else transfer (except optical drive, dont need it), or am i missing something? tldr; with new mobo, psu and case, will everything else transfer to where i have an operational pc if a new mobo, psu and case will get me out of proprietary lockdown, what mobo should i get? i cant overclock and i want to go as small as possible, with all the other components i already have. can you give me some suggestions? willing to spend 200-300 on all 3.
  19. thanks for replies. maybe its time to get rid of the dell. The only thing giving me the problems is the proprietary mobo right? I could just get a new mobo (and i guess a case) and I wouldnt have any problems getting a new psu right? (The white, 8 pin, that you can see in the close-up pic is what plugs into my psu)
  20. i have a dell 365 watt psu that is gold rated and i just bought a evga sc 1060 6gb which takes a 6 pin and says minimum 400w psu on the box. ive had it installed for about a day with no shut downs, but im worried its being throttled(bottlenecked?) by not getting enough power. so obviously you would say, "buy a new psu with more watts" the problem is dell uses proprietary parts, so i would have to use an adapter (im including pics of the adapter i bought). its not exactly the most professional looking job. so tldr, 1)is it better to run the 1060 with the stock 365w gold rated psu, or use the adapter and get a higher watt psu? 2) is there a way to measure how many watts my pc is using? 3)is there some things i can do to make sure my gpu is performing at its best? ( replaces 750ti, i uninstalled all the old drivers before i upgraded and i use geforce experience to "optimize" games i am playing) any help or info is greatly appreciated. thanks i5 4690 3.5ghz cpu, 16g ram, 500g ssd, 1tb hdd
  21. need a cheap laptop to raid maybe once a month when i cant make it home. i have a nice desktop, so this will hardly ever be used for wow. heres some configs ive found in my budget. will any of them run legion decent enough to 20-25 man raid? i dont need ultra settings, and I'd even be willing to drop the resolution down if that would help. I just need it to be smooth enough to heal. lenovo ideapad 320 430$ (380$ w/out windows) amd a12-9700p 8gb 1tb hdd amd radeon r7 dell inspiron 15 3000 series (400$, 350$ w/out win) i3 7100 8gb, 1tb hdd intel hd graphics 630 Acer Aspire E Series E5-575G-57K 15.6" (480$) Intel Core i5-7200U Processor, NVIDIA 940MX 2GB graphics, 8GB RAM will any of these be good enough? ive never had amd, so idk. or if you hav any other suggestions in the same price range, that be helpful. im just not really into paying much more for something im not gonna use often. cheers
  22. Thanks for your response. yes, one HDD. its an ASUS x200la, 500gb HDD, 4gb, i3 2010u, updated to BIOS 204. So after doing the "list disk" I get this Disk ### Status Size Free Dyn Gpt Disk 0 online 465 GB 0b No star under Gpt. I tried restoring all default settings in BIOS and it would just loop back to BIOS until I did what I wrote above again. I think I have a week to return this, which is about up tomorrow so please let me know if I should just try to return it. I have a win 8.1 disc from my dell pc....I don't know if I could install that onto a flash and then onto this ASUS notebook? (no optical drive) thanks again, cheers
  23. So I just got a new(refurbished) ASUS x200la. I've wanted to update the drivers etc. so I flashed the new bios 204 from asus website to flash drive, flashed it in bios, it was successful but when I saved and exit win 8.1 wouldn't boot, it would just loop back to bios. the default settings looked like this Boot Config Fast Boot enabled Launch CSM Disabled So I tried to change launch CSM to enable but I was told "CSM will not be enabled if secure boot control is enabled..." So I disabled secure boot control, enabled CSM save and exit and tada! win 8.1 booted up! So now my BIOS looks like this Boot Config Launch CSM Enabled Launch PXE OProm policy disabled Boot option priorities Boot #1 PO Toshiba mq01abf050 delete boot option my pc works fine now, as far as I can tell, but i cant help thinking this isn't the optimized way to have my BIOS set up. SO my question is, I have NO IDEA what any of this really means. Did I just happen to get it right? Should I change these options? I would love any kind of explanation. thanks guys P.S. if needed i'll take pics of the actual screens
