  1. That fits almost perfectly to what happened to me. I just replaced the PSU now though, along with the case, using my old GPU for now until a new 970 is sent back to me. Thank yoo <3
  2. I actually love a "glowing" PC. If it's a bright light you should be able to turn it off though, eg. when watching movies in the dark and the light's distracting. It should also definitely NOT be all over the place though. LED fans here, an LED strip there, pulsating GPU LEDs... no way. The colors should also fit together. What I like is something like that... https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/PtIE7_YS5UGRGuFiV9sL1vUabWy-5m_3x1mbBxH446w=w552-h414-p-no Simple and beautiful. http://i.imgur.com/GLsVY.jpg NOT beautiful. Not at all.
  3. When you instantly stand still and smile as soon as you see old PC parts, collected in a box.
  4. Alright, so you're basically saying that changing the PSU will definitely get rid of my problem? I'd be looking out for a cheap, modular one that hopefully has black cables (unlike my current one)... any other recommendations aside the EVGA SuperNOVA? Although... for some reason my PSU is still pretty quiet. Not completely quiet but I can't hear it at a distance of about 0,5m. Instead I am now hearing a similar, but lower pitched noise from the CPU area: CPU fan. I've never heard it doing that before... might be looking out for another cheap but quiet CPU fan aswell. Christ, that's so much money to spend. Will probably split it up and upgrade one part after another. Anyway, the main question is: Will changing the PSU get rid of the problem or can the GPU somehow cause issues on any PSU? And is there any explanation for the noise disappearing when putting the CPU on full load/highest power consumption? Once again, thanks a ton the replies. EDIT: Alright so my GPU also turned out to be whining a LOT when it's on full load. My current PSU doesn't have enough plugs to power additional stuff I ordered, and its cables are too short for my new case. I sent the GTX back and am hoping that I'll get an MSI one instead, heard a lot of good stuff out there related to coil whining. Ordered a new PSU aswell. Wasted so much money now, I just want to die. Hopefully I'll get the MSI card, and hopefully the new PSU will shut its mouth. I chose the PSU you suggested, spartaman64. Seems to be a quite nice one. Not sure whether this can be marked as solved...
  5. Well that PSU has quite a few good reviews on Mindfactory (where I got it from) and other websites, including things like "there is no coil whining". Anyway, nice to know from you guys. Thanks for the replies, will keep the "unknownness" in mind.
  6. Hello everyone. After hours and hours of trying to find out where the sound comes from and what is causing it I "gave up" and decided to join this community and ask for help. My current build: CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE @ 3,4 GHz GPU: Palit GTX 970 Jetstream Motherboard: ASRock 970 Extreme 3 RAM: 8GB G.Skill (4x2GB) PSU: Sharkoon WPM500 (500 watts) I had this PC, together with a GTX 660 OC Edition, for over one and a half years now. Let me explain my situation: I've recently ordered a Palit GTX 970 Jetstream and 2x2GB RAM as an upgrade for my computer. I replaced my previous Palit GTX 660 OC Edition with the GTX 970. Note that the 660 only needs one 6-pin power connector, the 970 needs two of those. So, after successfully installing it and playing some Metal Gear Solid for an evening I thought everything was fine. That turned out to be wrong. The next day I started to hear a whining noise (I assume it's coil whining) and thought that it was coming from the 970, simply because it's known for those issues. However, when I was about to ship it back I realized that the whining was even louder when my ear was next to the PSU. Now I am very sure that the PSU is the whining device. My idea was that maybe it isn't "keeping up" properly with the now higher energy consumption, caused by the new GPU. I made a small test: I opened Windows' energy saving menu and kept changing between "performance" and "energy saving". There was a clear difference. Whenever I set it to "performance", the beeping noise was louder and fully constant. When I set it back to "energy saving", the noise was a little more quiet and it stopped sometimes (only for a splitsecond). So I decided to check what happens when I make the CPU consume a lot of power. I downloaded Prime95 and ran a stress test. I made sure that it was set to "high energy consumption". The result is completely irritating for me: the whining sound stopped. Couldn't hear anything. I also ran FurMark. When using "Burn-in" (I don't know what exactly that does though) the beeping became a whole lot louder and at some point it changed to some sort of rattling noise. Other general info: 1. The GPU also whines - LOUDLY - when playing games with really high FPS. Using V-Sync completely prevents it from happening. 2. The beeping noise is there as soon as I start my PC. It doesn't matter whether Windows is running or not, and it doesn't really matter whether I am playing any games or not. Something else that I also realized is that the whining is less constant when I am moving the mouse. That should actually lead to the GPU again, but it's the PSU that is making those noises... 3. The whining is gone at this very moment for some reason, but I assume that it'll be back again the next time I start my PC. 4. I disabled AMD power saving features in the BIOS. The beeping noise was still there, but later stopped (like I said in 3.). I hope you understand why I am so confused right now. Nothing really seems to fit together. I do not want to just go ahead and buy a new PSU without being sure whether that would even help or not. There's a high risk I'd be spending money for nothing. That is why I want to ask: What should I be doing next to find out how to fix it? Which tests should I run, which settings should I change? Any other ideas on what I could try? I don't know anyone who can provide me a "test PSU" or who has a computer that I can use to see whether the GPU causes issues. Short form: I know for sure that the noise is coming from the PSU, and I am pretty sure that it is related to the GPU, but the noise is gone when I make the CPU consume a lot of power. Any other info you need? Just tell me. Thanks in advance for ANY helpful information!
