  1. unRAID was definitely in the cards unfortunately due to some costs and family matters I can't afford it at this time. I hope to have a home lab one day but I am limited to what I can do at his moment due to space, time, and money. (I went to college for System Administration and Networking albeit not the best student ahaha. currently brushing myself up on knowledge) so yeah a singular system is the best I can do at this moment. I am leaning towards a Debian KVM environment with Docker as you mentioned. But I've never considered SnapRAID really. I inquired mainly because I'm curious to what's going on and filling some gaps.
  2. Hi, thanks for the replies. Yeah debian seems like a more clear and stable route. The only thing is I'm not sure about NAS cause I've only ever used freeNAS. I'm sure a quick google later would be able to answer that for me. Hahahaha thank you for the confirmation.
  3. Hi all, I have a new home server and have quite a bit of things I'd like to do with it of course. My previous home server was just a simple file server, plex, and minecraft. Now, I want to do more with the new server. And I need some suggestions on the base OS for the Server itself. I was thinking CentOS, Debian, or Ubuntu... I'm fine with command line use too. I use Linux rather a lot. The specs are okay I'd believe. Cpu is my older FX 8350 (I know, I'm looking into a different CPU currently I can't afford much right now), 32GB of RAM, 4x 4TB Iron Wolfs (got super cheap, new, all my place of work had), my old GTX 960 for hardware transcoding (there'd only ever be 2 maybe 3 Max streams happening at once, mostly 1080p and once in a while 4K) The new main things are: - NAS and file server - Plex - minecraft - steam game cache - potentially backups - PiHole - Reverse Proxy - Music server - and of course some other things that I'm sure I'll think of later. Any recommendations of how to lay this out software-wise would be awesome! Also, I've looked into Hypervisors not sure if that'd be good for NAS. FreeNAS doesn't support gpu hardware transcoding (unless I'm very wrong). unRAID probably not cause money is tight currently too. If I do not respond right away to your awesome insightful responses, forgive me, I'm on nights shifts. Thank you so much guys!
  4. Some results: I adjusted the voltage for DRAM and SOC. Adjusted speed to 2733MHz it became unstable, then provided with BSOD (kernel security check failure). I lowered the frequency 2666MHz however, it too became unstable. BSOD (reference by pointer). So far it's running at 2400MHz stable for now. I ran the Windows Memory test. Returned with no errors. I have yet to raise the voltage and test again. I've played a few games too and ran some VMs already with 2400MHz set. So far it's still stable.

  6. I will try this. I will report later with results.
  7. Apologies, I meant to reply to your previous post. I did enable XMP however, the system would start then immediately shutdown and set itself to 2133MHz. That's when I started manually changing speeds.
  8. I believe it's set to auto as per my friend recommending that. That's why I suspect they're not getting enough power.
  9. Ahh yes, I forgot to mention that. There timings are both the same.
  10. Hey all, I got a bit of problem adding more RAM to my rig. I made sure everything compatible before doing so. However, It just starts then shutdown and auto clears my CMOS. I'm trying to add another kit of 2x8GB sticks. My PC currently uses 16GB 3200MHz kit Corsair Vengeance and the new extra kit of 16GB is the same as well. I've done my due diligence, ran some tests, swapped each stick, checked each slot. I tried different lower frequency speeds as well, as low as 2133MHz. I should note that at 2133MHz it was pretty stable and then trying to get it past 2666MHz it can become unstable and then reverts itself to 2133MHz. Could this be a power supply problem and/or DRAM voltage problem? I'll give a break down of my PCs specs below. My reasoning behind 32GB of RAM is because use my system for both workstation purposes along with gaming (Virtual Machines). If anyone could kindly spread some knowledge or guidance that would be wonderful! Thank you very much! - Lucas Specs: CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 2700x Mobo: MSi x470 gaming plus RAM: 16GB Corsair Vengeance LPX (trying to upgrade to 32GB) GPU: RX 580 8GB PSU: 750W
  11. Hey Everyone, I'm having a host of issues. I recently re-built/upgraded my PC. Along with the upgrade returned old issues and some new ones. The GPU I'm using is an MSi RX 580 8GB. I carried this over from my previous build. (I will list both previous and new builds at the bottom. Issues: 1. From time to time either on boot at login or shortly after, a checker boarding effect appears. When this happens my PC halts and the GPU basically shuts itself down. Only way to recover is, well, force a shutdown. After getting this mind-bonkers of a problem. I ventured into Events Viewer and looked into the "error". So I got a bunch of Warnings with EventID: 4101 with this description: "Display driver amdkmdap stopped responding and has successfully recovered". To the internet I went, and came back with nothing. So I had this problem before on my previous build with this same GPU. Nothing but a driver rollback to ways back resolved and updated a month later and haven't seen it for a year or so. However, it started to appear on the AMD supported driver for Modern Warfare. I cannot rollback farther because Modern Warfare and some other titles will not start unless on a updated driver. I also provided a image of the checker effect. I cannot afford a new GPU at the moment. I plan on upgrading to a RX 5700XT some time in the new year. 2. I do not think I'm getting great performance with my GPU either. Kind of low FPS. My buddy with the same build is getting crazy FPS sometimes, around 120 - 144FPS area. I don't believe him but 60 - 30 is all I can pull off. Modern Warfare is running at Maxed 1080p settings 60FPS so I cannot complain too much. However, my friend I mentioned. He's getting something like 120 - 144 at 1440p. Could this because he's freesync? I don't a freesync monitor so I cannot test this claim. Does my output sound right? Any help guys and gals would be awesome. I'm almost at my wits end. I work and go to school a lot and do not have much time for trouble shooting. It's funny. I go to school for Networking and Cyber Security and yet, I can't figure out my issues with my rig. I'm not foreign to computers. So there will be no need to dumb it down so to speak. So have it. I got a mystery I cannot solve. Help. And remember, I love you! Lucas I got more issues too. I'll post later in the appropriate channels Thanks. 12. Hello, So I have a fairly old PC with some not all that optimal parts. So I've noticed some odd temperatures going on. I have a Corsair H100i GTX CPU cooler, normally when doing things such as browsing, discord, Netflix. Usually at the same time, I can run the PC in a quiet profile. Lately, I've noticed just doing those things my cooler ramps up and the pump start pumping faster. So I've been checking out my temps for some reason Corsair Link (a glitchy mess) reports that MB Sensor 2 is at 60+ Celsius (Mobo: msi Gaming 970). And everything else is fine. So I checked HWiNFO64 and it reports my CPU 60+ Celsius. My CPU is like 20 celsius. So I'm thinking is Cosair Link screwing up? Should I be worried? I did check my MOBO with a temp gun and it seemed fine. One VRM on the board was report a temp similar but nonetheless was at least 5 - 6 degrees lower than the reporting sensor. I provided to screen snips of the reporting temps too. Any help, insight, guidance would be greatly appreciated! One more thing I should mention is that the largest VRM on the board, it's thermal pad underneath has been leaking oil (for lack of a better phrase). I've been aware of this for months and I believe not the cause to the issue. I asked this question before about an issue I am having adding more RAM to this machine. I cannot seem to add more RAM as the system will not Post. I've been at this issue for almost 2 months now and I cannot seem to get my system to use them. I tested all the sticks. (Currently using the set in the PC right now). I've done my research prior to purchase. Checked the Mobo it can take 32GB. I have 16GB currently and I'm trying to add 16 more. They're both the same set too. All the slots are working fine too. Even cleaned them... I'll pop in the 2 extra sticks and it just won't post no matter what I do. I'm at my wits end with this RAM. Any help, insight, guidance would be appreciated greatly! 13. Excellent. That's what I was thing in regards to the speeds. I currently have my PC running on the new kit alone at the moment.
  14. Hi all, I've bought some more RAM for my PC as I need it for Virtual Machines of servers I run for school. I have currently have 16GB of DDR3 RAM and I bought another kit of the same RAM just in a different colour. One is black other is red. Irrelevant. The RAM in question is the Kingston HyperX Fury sticks of 2x8GB. Same model/part number. So I got them in today and popped them in. (referred to my manual as always) hit power and my PC will not boot. I've tried the troubleshootings of rainbows and cannot figure out for the life of me what's wrong. It works fine with 16GB of RAM but 32GB it does not boot to show the BIOS. So either something is up with the Mobo. Which is possible. My VRM thermal pads are leaking oil. (Odd yes. Bad? Very most likely. Should I fix that? Probably). If anyone has any idea what could be wrong that I am doing here drop your suggestion please my good people! Specs of my PC probably would be helpful too. Specs: Mobo: MSi Gaming 970 AM3+ CPU: AMD FX-8350 Black Edition RAM: Kingston HyperX Fury *Black/red 4x8GB HX318C10F*K2/16 1866MHz GPU: MSi GamingX RX 580 8GB 2x SSD: 1TB Samsung 860 Evo Cooler: Cosair H100i GTX PSU: Cosair semi-modular 650W 80+ Gold I plan on upgrading hopefully sometime in the new year. She's getting old, especially with those cheap entry level parts. Turn her into server maybe... Also Windows 10 task manager and CPU-Z detects the RAM is running at 933MHz and not detecting 1866MHz which it should be. Anything about that would be helpful too. Thank you! - Lucas
  15. Yep. I've been looking into Event viewer more under system. And I'm getting this warning. The driver \Driver\WudfRd failed to load for the device ROOT\WPD\0000. Event ID 219. It seems like it could my PSU after all.
  16. I am not sure where else I should post this. Feel free to move it if need be or if the solution was/has been already found. The other day I downloaded Fortnite. Got it all downloaded started it up tried to join a friend and boom... My PC just rebooted. No BSOD. Nothing in Event Viewer at all. No errors I know of. So I tried some other games like Skyrim, Guild Wars 2, Sonic Adventure 2, Tomb Raider, and Doom and everything ran fine. So I tried Borderlands 2 thinking it'll be fine. Probably just bad files in Fortnite. Nope. The game rebooted at title screen. Tried all the other Unreal Engine games. Same thing! Reboot! Reboot! and REBOOT! And I'm not sure what's wrong. PSU seems, GPU, I rolled it to 2016 drivers. Same issue. Memory test. Everything. Updated/Re-Updated the BIOS. Nothing works. My desktop seems fine. But it cannot run Unreal games. I use to never have this issue like this before with any game or software. I played Borderlands, Bioshock, and Dishonored with no problems before too earlier this year! This is really odd. Only Unreal games do not work. Hehe I'm amazed about this. If anyone has any insight to what maybe wrong that would be awesome! 17. I am waiting for Vega to see what it is. But a 1070 in Canada is way too much for me and I don't make much money right now.
  18. The reason why Ryzen appeals to me to so much is because I am doing workstation tasks on my machine. Like Virtual OS, Servers, Editing, Scripting, networking labs, etc... But I also do quite a bit of gaming on my PC as well. I have some odd of 300+ games on steam and more from other places. I just want to build a machine that can be a mixture of both. I'd buy a 1070 but it's way too much for me here in Canada. The card is basically $550 - $600. This is why AMD is appealing to me here based on price. And that's why I am hoping that this CPU and GPU pair is a lot better than I hoped.
  19. Hey guys. Haven't posted in a while. So I got a RX 480 coming in the mail very soon and I am thinking about upgrading my entire PC over time now. I want to build a computer that is more set for a workstation that is also main used to play games @ 1080p 60fps solid or 1440p. (Probably not so much 1440p). So my question is will the RX 480 be a great pair with Ryzen 7 1700X? I've posted before about the RX 480 paired with my current FX-8350 and got a great response about it. I bought the RX 480 with the intention of putting it into my current PC (Specs for that listed below) as I saw a friend of mine who basically has the same PC as I currently do with same CPU. We saw a performance boost in games GTA V, Crysis 3 and Guild Wars 2. I say Guild Wars 2 as I am frequent player of it and I would like better performance in such a CPU intensive game. So I am hoping that RX 480 would be a great pair with the R7 1700X. Most of the specs for my new PC are things I already have, like the case, psu, storage, and cooler. Any advice or tips would be awesome. I'm not brand bias I am sort of brand loyal but I do not mind switching (snap figures) out with the more expensive guys like Intel and Nividia. I'm always tight on money that is why AMD always appeals to me the most. The NEW PC Specs I have so far are: CPU: Ryzen 7 1700X MOBO: MSi X370 Gaming Pro RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB DDR4 3000MHz Cooler: Corsair H100i GTX Liquid Cooler GPU: MSi RX 480 8GB SSD: Samsung EVO 500GB PSU: EVGA 650w 80+ Gold Full Modular Case: NZXT s340 black/red (Probably going to change for a case with external bays. I do a lot of disc ripping and maybe put in other PCI or PCIe cards) My Current PC: CPU: FX-8350 Black Edition MOBO: MSI Gaming 970 RAM: HyperX Fury 1866MHz 16GB DDR3 Cooler: Corsair H100i GTX GPU: MSI R9 380 4GB SSD: Samsung EVO 500GB PSU: EVGA 650w 80+ Gold Full Modular Case: NZXT s340 black/red
  20. Hi guys. I finally upgraded to the Relive driver. It's not that great so far. When I upgraded to the new driver I noticed a lot, and I mean a lot of constant greenish tearing on my desktop screen across 3 monitors. So in my troubleshooting I discovered it works fine with 2 monitors and I have 3 monitors. So when I enable the 3rd monitor I get the tearing again. FPS on games and such is perfectly fine, if not better when just using 2 monitors. Seems the same with the 3rd monitor too but with the epileptic tearing. My GPU is an msi R9 380 4GB. So anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this? Just roll back? I need the 3rd monitor for multitasking for school working while I'm running guest operating systems. Also while I'm here. I am looking into getting a new GPU hopefully in the near future. I'm thinking msi RX 480 8GB or msi GTX 1060 6GB. I know my rigs CPU (FX-8350) is currently bottlenecked by my GPU. So to close the gap a bit more would be nice. I mean the performance I have right now is quite satisfying with my games between 50 - 60 FPS with tweaked high or close to max settings at 1080p. My rig is over a year old now. So any suggestions on that too would be awesome. My specs if needed: CPU: AMD FX-8350 8-core 4GHz Black RAM: Kingston HyperX Fury Red 16GB 1866MHz GPU: msi R9 380 4GB Storage: 2 Kingston 480GB SSDs in RAID 0 with 4TB 7200 RPM Seagate HDD Cooler: Corsair H100i GTX Liquid Cooler MOBO: msi Gaming 970 (Not the greatest but oh well :/) PSU: EVGA Fully Modular 80+ Gold 650W
  21. Have you ran Guild Wars 2 on it? If you have, how well does it run?
  22. Sorry I meant to mention that was while running Guild Wars 2. Snip of the GPU Dips:
  23. Oh okay. Good to know. So in msi afterburner shows many many drops in GPU usage performance like from 0 to 100. So that would be a GPU bottleneck correct?
  24. Also I should mention. I play Guild Wars 2. I know the FX-8350 isn't the best thing for a more CPU intensive game(s). However, with my current build I maintain an average FPS of 45 - 60. So not bad. So I'm hoping with a not as wide of a bottleneck between the CPU and GPU the game should run better. I've done research on this and talked to people as well about it. Conclusions I got was that I would get increased performance. Thoughts on this?
