  1. No 5 port managed switches worth a recommendation come to mind. I find Zyxel managed switches are hard to beat for their price point. This 8 port from Newegg should do the trick, or if size is not a factor a 16 or 24 port version brings more value imo. I am using this model and find it perfect for my needs. Watch out though there are a lot of cheap managed switches on Ebay but most will be commercial grade that use more power and make way more noise and heat. The Zyxel's mentioned are dead silent, run cool and very low power usage.
  2. Not sure if that would work, it is not a DAC cable. This is what im using --> 10m DAC off Ebay I picked up two s310's for $16 each shipped, and the dual port s320 for like $50. The cable's are less than $20 from that seller on Ebay. Hope this helps.
  3. My Freenas uses the dual port Chelsio s320 and my workstation has the s310, they are directly connected with a 10m DAC cable. This works perfectly. I am also working on creating a bridge in Freenas which should let me add in another server with a s310 directly attached to the Freenas dual port card. IMO if you want 10gb cheaply done on Freenas the Chelsio cards are a win.
  4. T The TiB thing is kind of new to me, I had never heard of TiB till I started using FreeNAS. FreeNAS reports 20.1 TiB usable and that should be about 21.8 TB correct? What's strange is I just noticed my CIFS share viewed on my desktop says 20.1TB, does it not realize that is TiB or what?
  5. Update #1 Picked up 2 more 3TB TOSHIBA PH3300U on the cheap and this Evercool 5.25" to 3.5" HDD Expansion Unit off Amazon. Also added a noctua 80mm fan suspended behind the drives to help pull the hot air out, the Evercool unit pushes with its own 80mm fan. Previous 8 disk volume was erased and then all 10 disks were setup in another RaidZ2 volume. Was reading this a more optimal amount of drives for RaidZ2 anyway so it worked out great. I still cant get over how quiet this build turned out even with all the drives and fans, really pleased so far and extremely happy I finally built a dedicated server. RaidZ2 provides 2 disks of parity so fairly safe in the event of a drive failure. Possibly might try RaidZ3 in the future.   6. No point wasting money on a non managed switch if you have thoughts of teaming and already have a server. Take a look at managed switches so you can setup LACP ect... may I suggest this model. Currently using it myself, did a fair amount of research and found it to be well reviewed and one of the lowest priced options for a managed switch. Also why exactly do you want to separate wireless from your router hardware? I would look into a wireless ac router if you are going with a commercial hardware setup. Put the saved money into a managed switch and call it a day.
  7. First off the only thing I know for sure about flashing these cards is its a pain in the ass. I want to say I read somewhere that you cant go backwards on firmware/bios updates using MSM. I do not remember anything about checking IP or being asked for an IP when I used MSM. Have you tried the DOS method or EFI Shell?
  8. Cool build man, I think we are on the same page when it comes to our Nas boxes lol. I see you went with the extra fans and looks like zip ties which is what I did also. Have been extremely happy with my build as I am sure you will be, it has really been fun and I feel so much better about my data.
  9. The drive cages and thumb screw holes on my case do not line up and are not usable for me. Do you think this is a major problem for my drives? They feel secure and well mounted so I don't know. I have good positive pressure, probably going to pick up another hot swap bay off monoprice to match the top one though. And I feel your pain in the cat department, for some reason this is now the place to be for our cats....
  10. The problem with the R5 is that the front intake fans don't work so good with the filter on and door closed. Adding the extra 2 120mm lowered my drive temps 5C. Drives are now 35C under load. Also there is not a factory mounting setup to add these fans, I had to use zip ties, which sounds fine till you try to do it lol, larger hands and small zip ties....sigh. Now that I think about it more I bet you could drill some holes and use the rubber Noctua things to mount the fans.

Previously I had been serving the media and file sharing for my home network with my main desktop machine, it has a 17TB Flexraid setup that is still going but now only for redundancy. The new machine is running the latest FreeNAS with various plugins. Specs below. 24TB Advertised, I am using a Raidz2 8 disk array, for 16.4TB Usable and can lose 2 drives before game over.   12. Update: 6-18-15 Its possible this method will not work if your card is already updated past P16 Firmware updates. The card I bought on ebay came with P7 on it. P16 is the recommended firmware to use with FreeNAS. These are the steps I used to flash P16 IT Firmware and update the bios on a LSI 9211-8i. First step is to download and install the latest MegaRAID Storage Manager (MSM) (Click to download MSM for Windows 32 & 64 Bit) Next is to obtain your choice of firmware and bios available here Once in MSM there is a place to click that says update firmware or something of that nature you really cant miss it. It will open a window that gives options of updating the bios and firmware and some other stuff. You will point the update to your choice of files for the update. I happened to use P16 IT firmware for use with freenas the file name was 2118it.bin I hit ok or similar, it started the process right up and completed in a few mins. Repeat for bios, choose update bios and select your bios file. Mine was named mptsas2.rom Computer specs used for the flash: Windows 7 Pro Gigabyte Z77 UD5H - I-5 3570k LSI 9211-8i inserted in the top x16 pci-x3.0 slot I really hope this helps someone out lol, this shit literally can drive you nuts. screw that pal error and efi shells imo....
  13. Well I tried something that I read should not work. I flashed the bios and firmware using LSI Megaraid Software on a windows 7 machine and it worked perfectly and instantly. I cant figure out why nobody really talks about this method, its literally pissing me off now.
  14. sas2flash.efi -listall on my new PFsense box ends with "no lsi card detected" something like that, its a new system I just built and it was hopeful because I was able to see my files in the efi shell but the system does not detect the card.... if there is something I can do to make the card show up I think that system has promise. I have tried everything and searched for days online trying to find another way, I basically have no other hardware left to try with. Having this brand new freenas server built and loaded with drives but no HBA card is driving me nuts, this is my first dedicated server.
