  1. Interesting info about the single display port, good to know! I was not aware G-Sync required DisplayPort but I knew DisplayPort has more features so I want to make sure this is going to the newer better monitor - perhaps not such a huge deal with a GTX 970, though yes G-Sync on it is the way to go. I have not tested games yet but I am getting some tearing playing video on the MSI and even scrolling through web pages, though this may be some Kodi or Ubuntu setting as I have adaptive sync enabled on the monitor. Anything else I could try to force POST on the MSI?
  2. I have a new MSI MAG274QRF-QD connected to the Displayport output of my GTX 970 and an old Acer XB270HU connected to the HDMI port of the card. Unfortunately Acer thought it was a good idea to sell this earlier version of the monitor with just a single DisplayPort input (and no other inputs, Displayport or otherwise) so I have it connected using this HDMI to DisplayPort adapter. This works fine once logged in but the POST and the subsequent prompt to decrypt with the Gigabyte logo above loads on the Acer and due to what must be low resolution in a minature display in the middle of the monitor. If I boot with just the Acer or just the MSI connected to the DisplayPort POST loads normally in fullscreen. My board is a Gigabyte GA-Z97MX-Gaming 5 and I have been through the BIOS and found no option where I can tell it to set the Displayport as primary. I read enabling Windows 8 features and CSM might help but it has not. I can live with this until the graphics card prices eventually come down but I would prefer not to! Is there something else I could try?
  3. Budget (including currency): ~ approximately €300 Country: Ireland Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: the latest AAA games, linux host system with other OS running with VFIO virtualisation and GPU passthrough I can pick this up for €230 delivered on alternate.de but I wanted to get some more opinions before I pull the trigger. Is this the best bang for buck NVMe or are there others I should consider?
  4. I have never used this drive, but when I had an opportunity to pick up some tech at a discount months ago I chose this as my board does have a m.2 slot and I thought if I set it up it is something that should migrate nicely to a future build upgrade. When I press the power button all fans turn for a second or two, and then the board lights stay on for a few more seconds before the system turns itself off completely and automatically keeps repeating the process. There is nothing displayed on my monitor at all throughout. I have tried with my graphics card and all of my SATA drives disconnected, and I have disconnected the CMOS battery for 1 minute and touched a screwdriver off the two reset points but I observe the same. The only thing that fixes this is disconnecting the m.2 drive. Searching the manual for m.2 I see warnings that when in use SATA ports 4/5 will be disabled, and that SATA express will be disabled, but nothing else. I also looked through the Bios (version F6 09/18/2015) and I do not see anything obvious that I should change. I know over the years I had to change some settings to get linux working properly on the BIOS so I have not reset it completely - yet. Maybe there is some setting I missed?
  5. I currently have an Acer Predator G-Sync XB270HU which I use with my GTX 970 - for gaming when I can. Next year after I can save some money, there is hopefully more supply, and the dust settles on price and best bang for buck, I would like to pick up either a RTX 3080 or 6800 XT but this may not be until the summer or even approaching Black Friday 2021. Right now I would like to pick up a second monitor to use for study, watching video tutorials on one while working on the other, and I am also starting to learn about trading so star at stock and cryptocurrency trends on Trading View 5 minute charts on both screens will be something I do a lot - I am not sure how much that should influence refresh rate, panel type, or anything else? A big question is if I should I buy the cheapest 1440p that I can find now and if I pick up a new monitor later for the new GPU, I can either sell the budget model or set up three screens which many traders use. By waiting on investing in a new monitor in the future I should get more for my money. If I spend less now it should also mean that I would be able to sooner afford the GPU, and whatever else is required like a mobo (current is Gigabyte GA-Z97MX-Gaming 5) or RAM - sooner. Paying for a good G-Sync and FreeSync compatible gaming monitor now is tempting as the distance between their prices and a basic monitor decrease with Black Friday. If I go the gaming route I was considering a Dell 27 Gaming Monitor: S2721DGFA (currently @ £485/€433/$513) or an ASUS TUF VG27AQ (currently @ £408/€456/$544). I have found finding a basic monitor much more difficult, perhaps something like a Philips Monitor Gaming 275E1S (currently @ £186/€209/€248). Being in the Republic of Ireland I buy a lot from the UK, most products on Amazon and many other suppliers will deliver here but other do not, and if I can confirm that boxed dimensions of the following are under 72cm x 31cm x 25cm I can use a cheap mail forwarding company for €5 which would not take away from the value: AOC Q2790PQU/BT (currently @ £168/€189/$224). For reference I have been using: Rtings 27" 1440p less than $500 (ordered by price even when not visible) and PC Part Picker UK 27" 1440p less than £510. Requirements: Swing, tilt, and height adjust, not curved, vesa mount, minimise any eye strain Bonus: Option to rotate into portrait Please help!
  6. I work remotely, and I have an email address I access using the Outlook Web App, but I would love if I could forward or redirect the email to a Gmail account, as that would give me a lot of options regarding complex filters and notifications etc. Unfortunately, the redirect and forwarding options in the settings do not work, and SMTP access or ADUC for same is not a possibility at this time.Even if I could login with the Android Outlook Web App I would be satisfied, but it does not recognise my email address and/or the domain.Since I am able to access the email in a web browser, is there anyway to get it from here to another email address or a local email client?
  7. Indeed, I do not think I will be buying a 4 monitor for some time as my QHD Gsync Acer is only about a year old. The issue is the GTX 970 cannot handle QHD for a lot of games at 50/60 FPS unless the settings are lowered a lot. A GTX 1070 can handle the same without lowering, so I would like to order one and sell the GTX 970. The only issue is picking the 1070.
  8. I am going to scrap the custom watercooling for now. I was considering a Gigabyte G1 GTX 1070 and a Noctua D15 instead. I have found it hard to find comparisons of the different 1070s available, but I read elsewhere on this forum Gigabyte are usually best for performance and overclocking, what do you think?
  9. Some time ago now, when I started tests to overclock my Intel 4690K I had some issues with cooling in my HTPC Fractal Design Node 605, despite experimenting with different fan configurations, so I never got past the testing phase. I have now ordered a Phanteks Enthoo EVOLV ATX Tempered Glass Edition, and I would like to upgrade my low profile NOCTUA NH-L12 as I only bought a low profile cooler so it would fit in the case. I would like a custom water loop for CPU and graphics card at some point, but it seems quite expensive, and I am wondering if it is something I should leave until my next major upgrade, and instead opt for something like the NOCTUA NH-D15 or even a closed loop watercooling kit? I built my PC December 2014, and I have since invested in a QHD Acer XB270HU. It would seem the next upgrade for my GTX 970, whatever that card may be, it will be able to handle 4K well, in which case it would be logical to also upgrade to a large 4K gaming monitor - this substantially increases upgrade cost. I would probably also upgrade the board and CPU at the same time. It may be another year or even two before I make this major upgrade, am I right to put off custom water loop cooling until then? Perhaps I am mistaken and there is or will be a card worth investing in, at a good bang for buck price, that would max out QHD and I need not put everything off to upgrade at once... I could put some money aside over the next month, and spend a few hundred on custom water cooling, I would just like to know if it is worth it considering my PC is just 2 years old, the monitor 1 year old, or if it is something better left until the next major upgrade? Current system: Gigabyte GA-Z97MX-Gaming 5, Sockel 1150, mATX Intel Core i5 i5-4690K CPU (Quad Core 3.5GHz Processor, 6MB Cache, Intel HD 4600 Graphics, Socket H3 LGA-1150 MSI NVIDIA GTX 970 Gaming Twin Frozr HDMI DVI-I DP Graphics Card (4GB, PCI Express, DDR5, 256 Bit) 1 x Ballistix Sport 8GB Single DDR3 1600 MT/s (PC3-12800) UDIMM 240-Pin Memory - BLS8G3D1609DS1S00CEU EVGA SuperNOVA 750 G2 750W ATX 2.3, 80+ Gold NOCTUA NH-L12 Samsung SSD 840 EVO Basic 250GB SATA 6Gb/s Multiple HDDs 4 x Fractal Design SILENT SERIES R2 120MM 12cm case fan Running QHD with my 4690K and GTX 970 set to stock settings I have to substantially lower graphics settings in games like Assassin's Creed Unity and Rust to get ~ 50/60 FPS. I am hoping by over clocking both CPU and graphics I can increase these settings. Maybe the best upgrade path would be GTX 1070 -> NOCTUA NH-D15 -> when I have some disposable income custom water cooling? I would appreciate any input or guidance you can offer.
  10. Update: 3. Bogus DNS entry In Network Setting >> DNS >> DNS Entry I selected add new DNS entry, and then entered msecnd.net as the host and the IP 10.0.0.1. When I try to ping msecnd.net in now attempts to ping 10.0.0.1, but when I load the test website https://az833301.vo.msecnd.net/ in a new tab in Firefox it is still loading. I tried entering ipconfig /flushdns into the command prompt but this made no difference, the website still loads. I then tried entering another DNS entry as wildcard *.msecnd.net with the IP 10.0.0.2 but the router would not accept this. Instead, just in case it worked, I entered .msecnd.net 10.0.0.2. Router rebooted, PC rebooted, DNS flushed - no change, website loads fine. I read online this may only work if the router is set up as the DNS server for the PC, so in the LAN config on Windows 10 I changed DNS automatically detect to preferred to 192.168.1.1 (Router's IP) and alternate to 192.168.1.2 as I had to enter something. Everything rebooted again, DNS flushed, no change. I also read that Chrome has its own DNS settings, so it does not use the Windows set DNS - I have been testing with Firefox and IE, so unless they also have their own DNS settings this is not working. If it matters I have Unotelly DNS (to get around geoblocking) configured in Network Settings >> Broadband >> VDSL >> preferred and alternate. I mention this as there appears to be other places it can be entered. To be honest I wish I could just load OpenWRT, tomato, or DD-WRT firmware onto this router but as far as I am aware this is not possible. Perhaps the domain could be blocked with a static route or some other routing settings? For instance, there are options as below. I messed around with it but it did not help. I was thinking, as I am able to create interfaces, perhaps I could attempt to route traffic from the domain out some bogus interface. Along with that I also tried routing it out the 3G (currently dongleless) interface but it still loaded the website, perhaps because it falls back to some other interface, because configured it wrong, or because here it also will not catch anything *.msecnd.net with msecnd.net as the parameter.
  11. Please note I have previously unbranded this router to remove the Eircom firmware and it now runs the latest (at least at the time) Zyxel officially released stable firmware. On my new Samsung J series TV I cannot let it update from factory firmware or I will not be able to sideload apps from USB, which would restrict me to having only apps from one country installed at a time, basically it is Irish RTÉ, TG4, 3Player OR British iPlayer, All4, ITVHub - not both sets. Samsung made a change in this series of television so that disabling updates from the normal and service menus does not stop updates fully, and the firmware will still update. The only way around this is to block updates at the network level. The domains I need to block are the following: msecnd.netsamsungotn.net I am testing for success by attempting to block just the first domain, first on my PC, which has the hostname roadrunner and the MAC address you will see in the screenshot. I have been testing by trying to load this link in a new browser tab: https://az833301.vo.msecnd.net/ What I have tried so far: 1. Using Security >> Parental Control. Just in case the settins were phrased badly, I tried sliding the bar so that no access was from '00:00 - 24:00' but this made no difference. Also, I am not able to select '00:01 - 24:00', the earliest next available is '00:30 - 24:00'. I tried with an without a network service setting configured as above. The input box for site/URL keyword would not accept the asterisk when I tried to enter *.mscend.net. 2. Using Security >> Firewall. The IP below was in the output of ping msecnd.net yesterday, but now there is no reply, even from other devices on the network. Also, blocking by IP may be risky - if the TV is configured to look for updates by host@Domain16, and they change the IP, it will update. I know it says destination IP address below, but just in case I tried entering msecnd.net but it would not accept it. It also would not let me enter a port range 1-65535, so I left it without a port setting. Definition of the 247 scheduler rule. I experimented with changing the time from '00:00 - 00:00' to '00:00 - 23:59' but this made no difference: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Neither of my two attempts above to block access to the domain msecnd.net worked, although when I experimented with the ACL set to ICMP instead of TCP/UDP - it did stop ping replies from the IP before I removed it. Please advise, am I missing something in my settings or is the config on this Zyxel just bugged or not able to block domains? Is there anything I can do? I really want to hook the new TV up to the network so I can stop using the Roku 3 for on demand media!
  12. So when I built my PC at the end of 2014 having a desktop with any SSD was a huge upgrade for me, but I really, really need more space for games than my Samsung SSD 840 EVO Basic 250GB offers. I would like to use it for booting into Linux and/or Hacintosh Mac OS in the future but only whblien complimenting something with much more space. I have been reading up on m.2 NVE SSDs, and they seem the way to go, but if I were to just order a Samung SM951 I would only be doubling capacity, and it would really irk me if a short while afterwards something similar with around 1TB of storage was available. For the love of all that is sacred to us computer nerds, is there any sign of a ~1TB m.2 NVE SSD consumer (even high end) solution coming soon, or even before the year is out? I am prepared to pay a premium for such a product, within reason though, as I will not pay ridiculous money for it, and I would like to know I am getting good 'bang for my buck'. I have also read different accounts on whether it will really make a difference to gaming or much else. Maybe I should just order a Samsung 850 Pro 2TB, or whatever the next best thing would be? Last I researched this a month or so ago: http://www.custompcreview.com/news/fms-2015-samsung-announces-pm953-pcie-gen-3-x4-ssd/25879/
  13. I can buy the XB270HU in Europe for €745. I have just been reading about the, from some reports, soon to be released XR341CK with an expected price tag of €1200. I like that it is even larger than 27 and has a HDMI port so other devices including a satelite receiver etc can be connected though ultimately I want which is best for PC gaming. Are any of you opting for the XR341CK over the XB270HU? Anything you would factor in to not doing so?
  14. The Acer Predator XB270HU is actually 1ms anyway, information from elsewhere was wrong! Reading reviews on it now. So would two GTX 970s in SLI be enough to fully utilise this monitor, and would that be in ultra high graphics?
