  1. in my explanation i said i had done this :p note to self, write TL;DRs in the future
  2. so over the last few months i've seen a noticable slow down in boot time, from when i log in. so I decided to find out how to make programmes not boot from log-in. I did what it said and took many programmes off. However, this really hasnt changed the total speed of it all. When i type my password in, windows will load then go to a black screen. it'll remain that way for 30seconds-2 minutes. this is the desktop loading.. then when the wallpaper finally loads, you have all the desktop icons and programmes that do launch on boot. i'm buying an SSD, however, I don't think that'll help massively, as the only few things that'll be on it is Win7 and a few games, so that'll more improve the pre-log-in load.. any suggestions on how to speed up boot times are welcome
  3. if i've read and understood correctly, the motherboard has a short. this could be for any reason, like a molex power adaptor accidently hitting your mobo, though i'd reckon that'd do more then just short your board lol! the motherboard is probably the problem.. have you tried cleaning it recently and used a hoover? hoovers will create static and that static could the short components on the mobo so, in all likelyhood the mobo is the problem! i'd see if its still under warranty (being 2 years old and all that), and see if you can get it replaced. hope this helps
  4. i wouldnt even suggest that card.. i mean even my 7850 sometimes struggles with GTA only averaging 30-40fps and 20fps when i decide to fuck shit up..
  5. just like these guys have said, go for the more expensive option if its not in insane increase.. you wont regret it and it'll be more future proof :)
  6. yeah 780 sounds like a good plan. certainly will future proof you for a bit longer
  7. Linus just answered my own question:
  8. i've always prefered the EVGA coolers compared to the ASUS coolers.. but i dont have any temperature tests for either cards so im just going on aesthetics!
  9. i shall be getting a 120gb samsung 840 ssd :p so when i do a fresh install of windows (using the same copy that i installed onto my hdd), will i encounter problems? like will it successfully register etc? afterall, all the components are the same..
  10. This topic has a few questions, so i'm going to number the questions so you can quickly refer to them if you can only answer 1 or 2 :) so at the moment i have quite a large room, however i'm having to move to one a quarter the size of it, literally. i will only be able to fit my bed and desk and a chair in there so i have to space conscious, thus why im moving from a tower case to a mid tower. That's from an Inwin Maelstrom to a Fractal Design r4 w/ window. As i wont be able to move my room around much when im in there, i've decided to upgrade some key parts before i move in there, and so i've decided for an SSD. This SSD will be for a boot drive, and/or cache (though i dont know much about how to cache for a harddrive and even if its possible. cpu - fx6100, mobo m5a97). Q1) can i cache a hdd with a ssd with amd? Q2) what size drive should i go for booting(60/120gb)? as far as i know, if the cpu and mobo dont change, windows will fresh install without hesitating onto the new ssd. this isn't so bad for me, though i would like confirmation (consider that Q3). normally when i look into new things i will follow a single manufacturer so i can understand how the said item works. so when i was learning about SSDs i followed samsung, so all i really know about is samsung when talking about SSDs. however i heard that they are reliable and a good brand to choose from; Q4) should it be a samsung SSD and if so, 840, 840 pro or 830 based on price-to-performance ratio thanks for reading and any additional questions i may have will be asked in the replies :)
  11. oh okay, i'll check them out!
  12. after looking at those, i recognised them from Linus's unboxing. they look awesome and all that, but unfortunately i want wireless :P ohwell, i guess no wireless headphones that of good quality use audio jacks :( thanks for the recommendations :P edit: any downfalls to the 930's that i should know of?
  13. additional question, can you use the soundcard with a usb headset?
  14. thanks very much, cant believe i even overlooked this! thanks so much!

    Logitech G930

Hey guys. So i've got a soundblaster recon 3d sound card, and i love the software that comes with it. it allows you to change all these settings that most sound software allows you too, and then also allows you to switch from Speakers to headphones, which is SUPER useful when you go from in-game to then watching a movie - especially with 5.1!! i like the g930s as i've seen them used when i watch a youtuber whom im subscribed too. they look nice, i like the wireless (and as far as my research, theres no lag/latency or loss of audio), i like the cable charging capability aswell. i'm willing to spend as much as they cost (£100~) so that's not a problem either. so i have two questions regarding the g930s, -they've been out for over 2 years now, so is there an upgraded headset from logitech? -as i plan to use my soundcard still, will i still be able to switch from headphones to speakers and have it work intendedly?
  16. some views but no answers, so i'm going to bump this :)!
  17. So i've had my iTunes library for god knows how long, a seriously long time. And for a number of years I've been able to use my keyboards media keys to play/pause/rewind/skip etc etc. Despite still having the ability to turn up/down, the media buttons now do not work with iTunes. I can't tell if this is an iTunes problem or a keyboard problem. So I tried using my mouse's marco keys to do the same thing. It's all set-up in the macro manager, with no luck. Only the volume works (so that'll be windows responding to the macro, but iTunes not).... can anyone help? i dont know how many people have the same problem and how(if) they have overcame it, but any advise would be much appreciated. keyboard: micorosft wireless keyboard 3000 v2.0 mouse: roccat kova [+]
  18. without having complications of windows and re-installing, i'd suggest a new case, the ssd (because despite not using the full potential it has, it will still be quicker then your hard drive, so worth the purchase - and can be used in a future rig when you have sata III in the future, thus a future proof purchase), and then maybe a new graphics card for the next gen of games?
  19. So after running my PC for folding, I'd say my rig pumps out about 25-35k PPD. Not overly impressive, but its up to 35k more points every day!
  20. I would personally trust the dell brand more. However I recently bought an Acer monitor and I'm enjoying it a lot :-P In this scenario however, dell over lg, thought I haven't looked at the specs
  21. nope unfortunately i haven't done anything with cable yet in any builds, so a good sleeving manufacture would be the last thing i knew :p and sleeving surely shouldnt have to feel nice to look nice? i mean yeah, a high quality one might feel nice, but you're not going to be touching the wires all the time so how they feel shouldnt matter, just as long as they look good would please me tbh! but then again, your build :p is there actually any appearance difference between cheap/high end sleeving?
  22. well i've been in your position before, putting my work up for the internet to look at. so i know that constructive criticism is more helpful then people just saying that they dont like something :p the current sleeving looks good, is it cheap then? and what brand are you going for this time?
  23. Good progress, and i like that you've done the push/pull config. that'll definitely help with keeping the CPU cool and all that :p the Nvidia sticker on the PSU isn't a bad idea either and really does show off the fact its a Nvidia rig :p shame about the cathode tube but the LEDs also look pretty good. when i saw the sleeving again, i got an idea - as the rig is black+green, how about doing every other cable green sleeve and the others kept black? thought that might be a nice idea :D I may also have to install white LEDs onto the i/o shield on my pc now :D love the idea!
  24. Hi, I've used the AMD Catalyst Control Centre to overclock my CPU, but with no luck. I can reach 4.2GHz on the test run, but when I try something as little as 3.7GHz (considering baseclock is 3.3-3.6GHz), I recieve an unstable overclock. So out of interest, I'd like to know what people do to overclock this chip on their motherboards, i.e using the BIOS to overclock their chip. I'm using an ASUS M5A97 mobo FYI
  25. I like the sleeving, looks good and suits it :P, and yeah getting a fan controller for that RAM heatsink must cut down on alot of noise! as for cutting the LED, I'm not entirely sure what cable it'd be, but you could just replace the whole fan with a green LED fan? edit: you could also try putting in some floor lighting, making it totally light up all parts of your internals :D
