  1. I've had an old dell pc sitting around dormant for a while so I had the idea of taking the 120mm Nidec BetaV fan out of it and putting it on my current cpu cooler to do a push-pull arrangement. Although after installing it, it isn't detected by the bios and doesn't spin at all. It uses a 5-pin connector, although one pin doesn't have a wire attached to it, so I just plugged it into a 4-pin header on my mobo (Asus M5A97-Evo R2) Also, the fan itself is slightly thicker than a standard 120mm fan, if that's any help What's the issue here? Edit: the atx board bit in the title is slightly irrelevant I guess, just 'modern board'
  2. It's a Thermaltake Toughpower 80+ Gold, and yeah the system still posts with another older power supply connected bootleggedly so it looks like I'll just need to get another psu. Thanks for all the help anyway
  3. Turned on the PC, it worked for like 10 seconds, then there was a bang and it all shut off. fml I guess I'll need to replace the psu, but is there a chance that other components were also damaged? Also, is it safe to now touch the pc if it's unplugged?
  4. I bought a power supply online and forgot to take into consideration that the wall connector might not be compatible with my country's (Australia) wall sockets. And sure enough, it isn't. Although I have another similar (Australian) power cord from an older pc that will fit into new psu, can I use that one instead? The new unusable cord is rated at 10A 125V The older Australian one is 10A 250V Cheers Edit: it's a 550W psu, supports input of 10A and 100-240V I can always just use an adapter for the original cord, right?
  5. I'm thinking of building using an Asus M5A97 R2 mobo in a Cooler Master N600 case. My issue is that while the case has two front panel usb 3.0 ports, the mobo only has one internal 3.0 header, but it says it has support for 2 additional ones (straight from mobo specs: 1 x USB 3.0 connector(s) support(s) additional 2 USB 3.0 port(s) (19-pin)) Do I need some kind of additional adapter to use the additional internal supported ones? (Links in case) Mobo http://www.asus.com/au/Motherboards/M5A97_R20/specifications/ Case http://www.coolermaster.com/case/mid-tower/n600/
  6. Linus' buyers' guide 2014 pairs a CX430 with a GTX 970 although in its tech specs, the 970 has a minimum power requirement of 500W (even 550W on the Gigabyte G1 Gaming card). Yet PSU calculators give a wattage of around 380-400W for the 970 (w/ fx-6300 as cpu). Is the ~500W min for the 970 just an overcompsenation then?
  7. I need a better cooler in time for summer and that one looks nice. There's no A/C in my place, so I might just end up cuddling up to the hopefully chilly case
