  1. Hi guys, I'm pricing up a potential build for my parents because their pc is six or seven years old and takes a good few minutes to boot into a useable state. They want something that will be quiet and will do everything they need (word and excel, emails, photo viewing and browsing) much quicker than their current one. Just wondering what you guys thing of the build, is the cpu a little overkill? Is there anywhere I can shave off some money? All prices are currently from amazon. Intel i5 4590 Quad Core CPU (3.30GHz, Socket 1150) (£161) Asus H97M-E Motherboard (£72) Corsair CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9 Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600 Mhz CL9 (£54) Samsung 840 EVO 250GB 2.5-Inch Basic SATA Solid State Drive (£88) Corsair Builder Series CXM 500W Modular 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX/EPS PSU (£53) Fractal Design ARC Mini R2 (£68) Samsung 24x Retail SATA DVD Writer (£13) Windows 8.1 student offer (£50) Total ~ £560 Many thanks
  2. Hi guys, I need to buy a laptop for uni and since it’s black Friday I was browsing on amazon and came across this (link below). It would be for an engineering degree so should be able to handle most cad/modelling software and games such as Wolfenstein, csgo, Arma e.t.c. It seems to have good specs for the price but I can't seem to find any "expert" reviews, only those by people on amazon which I don't always trust. Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with this brand/model or knows if it'll suit my requirements or just be a bit rubbish. Quick replies much appreciated. Many thanks. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cyberpower-FANGBOOK-15-6-inch-Laptop-Windows/dp/B00LXZ1NJ8/ref=sr_1_2?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1417192853&sr=1-2#productDetails
  3. Thanks for the advice guys, 212 evo it seems!
  4. So I'm planning on building my first pc for gaming and uni (engineering degree so some 3d modelling might be in there somewhere) and I was wondering what cpu cooler I should get as there are so many out there. Also I am planning on overclocking hence the aftermarket cooler This is my proposed build: CPU - Intel Core i5-4690K CPU 3.5GHz Socket H3 LGA-1150 (£169) CPU Cooler - ????? Motherboard – ASUS Mod 1150 Z97-A (£118) GPU - EVGA Nvidia GTX 970 4GB GDDR5 Graphics Card (£283) RAM - G-Skill 8GB Ripjaws X DDR3 2133 Dual Kit (£63) PSU - EVGA SuperNOVA 650W G1 (£72) Optical - Samsung 24x Retail SATA DVD Writer (£12) SSD - Crucial CT128 MX100 SSD1 128GB MX100 SATA 2.5 Inch 7mm SSD (£50) HDD - WD 1TB 3.5 inch Internal Hard Drive - Caviar Blue (£40) Case – Fractal Design Arc Midi R2 (£71) These are the coolers I'm currently considering is ascending price order (max budget is about £50): Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO / 412s ARTIC Cooling Freezer Xtreme Rev.2 Thermalright True Spirit 120 M BW Rev.A Be quiet BK013 Shadow Rock 2 Scythe SCMG-4000 Mugen 4 Zero Infinity Shiva SHI-001GS Thermaltake NiC C4 Noctua NH-U9B SE2 Any advice is much appreciated!
  5. Okay that sounds sensible, thanks!
  6. As is said I'm not really sure if I need wifi, I'll probably ditch it then get a card in the future if I discover I'm lost with out one. Yeah I've looked at parts picker, is buying from lots of different companies okay? (e.g. getting different parts from scan, ebuyer, amazon and aria e.t.c. for one build, I'm just worried about having problems with stuff and having to deal with lots of people as opposed to just amazon)?
  7. Sounds good, thanks!
  8. On amazon the 2133 is the same price as the 1600 so I just though I may as well stick it in.
  9. Did I also mention our ram is at 500MHz? Yeah i was thinking of dropping the wifi card as I don't think I'll really need it.
  10. Hi guys, thinking of building a pc for myself as our family one is still running a pentium processor from six odd years ago (don't laugh it was good when we got it). I've done some research and the actual building of it doesn't seem too hard, I'm just not sure if 1) all my components are compatible and 2) if they're the right ones for me. I want to be able to run games like ARMA, Wolfenstein the new order, CSGO on fairly high settings. If I build it then it will be my pc for uni so it should last that long before needing updating hugely, and I’m applying for MechEng so there might be some 3D modelling kind of stuff e.t.c. I’m also a tad over budget so any potential price savings would be most welcome (Ideally I would like to spend under £1000 (big ask I know)). Also what keyboard should I go with? Anyway here is my proposed parts list (all from amazon at the moment): CPU - Intel Core i5 i5-4690K CPU 3.5GHz Socket H3 LGA-1150) (£169) CPU Cooler - Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO (£25) Motherboard – ASUS Mod 1150 Z97-A (£118) GPU - EVGA Nvidia GTX 970 4GB GDDR5 Graphics Card (£283) RAM - G-Skill 8GB Ripjaws X DDR3 2133 Dual Kit (£63) PSU - EVGA SuperNOVA 650W G1 (£72) Optical - Samsung 24x Retail SATA DVD Writer (£12) SSD - Crucial CT128MX100SSD1 128GB MX100 SATA 2.5 Inch 7mm SSD (£50) HDD - WD 1TB 3.5 inch Internal Hard Drive - Caviar Blue (£40) Case – Fractal Design Arc Midi R2 (£71) Wifi card - TP-Link TL-WDN4800 450Mbps Wireless N Dual Band PCI Express Adapter (£26) OS - Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro (£50) Monitor - BenQ GL2460HM 24-inch (£120) Mouse - Redragon Centrophorus 2000 DPI Gaming Mouse Keyboard - ????? Total – about £1100 Any thoughts and/or help will be greatly appreciated.
