  1. Oh, anyone had any thoughts on my electricity problem? will this APC-BE700G-UK-Interface-Power-Saving-Back-UPS do the job as a short term backup power supply for safe shutdown??
  2. Thanks for the advice. Nearly identical to my first list  . A few changes as suggested by yourself should save me a few quid. Much appreciated. I'll let you know how it turns out. I'm a massive procrastinator especially when it comes to spending money. Thanks to everyone else as well. Anyone think of any last minute changes?.... Tintin *wish me luck
  3. Build 1 or 2. What do people think? I don't plan to be doing any overclocking at all [noob right here ]. *Build one goes with an i5-4690 3.5GHz Quad-Core and a XFX Radeon R9 280X 3GB. *Build two goes with an i3-4370 3.8GHz Dual-Core and a Zotac GeForce GTX 970 4GB Will an un-clocked i3 be OK going forward? Will I run into problems with an i3? How long till i5 will be needed for decent performance in modern AAA gaming? Slight change in the motherboards in the two builds - going off earlier advice. Going to have to stay under £700 though by the looks of my finances . Will be getting an SSD as soon as possible though. Thanks in advance for any help. 4. Lol, I'll stay legit Thanks for the RAM spot. PC Part Picker never said a thing about it. So it looks like I'm going with something similar to above. Not sure about your choice of case though. Only thing left to chose is the GPU. Decisions, decisions, decisions! Anyone else got any ideas on where to shave some cash without being stingy on performance? *Remember to include Windows 7, 64 bit home premium.
  5. I see a pattern. Is the AMD FX-8320 with a better graphics card a wiser choice than my original i5 4690 with not such a good GPU? Remember - without overclocking.
  6. Yeah I was pretty sure that people were going to suggest a bigger PSU. 600W it is then - I hear it's one part you should never cheap out on. Do you really think the other AMD CPU [AMD FX-8320] you suggested earlier (with your GPU - GTX 970) will give me better results and will hold up going into the future? Cheers for all the ideas by the way. Oh and I'll be picking up an SSD next year for sure.
  7. So you advise a lot less on the CPU and more on the GPU. Is this to avoid bottlenecks (excuse me, I'm a noob to all this)?? Is that CPU going to cope well with games coming out over the next year or so (I know we don't actually know what the req spec will be for lots of games yet but an educated guess) with it only being a dual core? Remember I don't intend to overclock. Cheers
  8. I took a basic £600 build guide from PCPartPicker and tweaked it a little bit.

  10. Tried a few times but doesn't seem to let me post the info. I'll keep trying. Now done
  11. Hi all. I'm new here and new to building PCs. I've been watching as many videos on 'building your own PC' as I can over the past few weeks. I can't seem to settle on a final build. I have no problems going the AMD or Intel route. I've not put a monitor in the build as I plan to hook up the PC via HDMI to our front TV. I've been doing that with my laptop but it's really starting to strain whilst playing anything remotely taxing. I would love to play my games at 1080p/60fps. I don't mind dropping to a slightly lower graphics setting [High instead of Ultra for example] if I can gain performance. Games I like playing are all your normal AAA stuff you'd expect. Shadow of Mordor was the final push to get me to do this. I was going to get a PS4 but I see 30fps becoming the norm for "next gen" consoles so I think now is the right time to fully embrace PC gaming (already got the bug via our mid range laptop). I play quite a few smaller indie titles but performance/quality shouldn't be an issue with a rig like this. So this will be a pure gaming rig - alternative to a next gen console. I plan on playing most of the big AAA games in the future at hopefully 1080p/60fps at decent graphics settings. I'm in the UK and have a budget around £650/£700. I could squeeze a little bit more money if really needed, but not much more. I've put this together for a pure starting point. I don't mind a complete change up if people think it's needed. http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/gnBzHx CPU Intel Core i5-4690 3.5GHz Quad-Core £158.00 Motherboard ASRock H97 PRO4 ATX LGA1150 £66.59 Memory Corsair Vengeance LP 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 £70.56 Storage Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM £35.94 Video Card XFX Radeon R9 280X 3GB Black Edition Double Dissipation £185.99 Case NZXT Source 210 Elite (Black) ATX Mid Tower £37.99 Power Supply Corsair 500W ATX12V £47.46 Optical Drive Samsung SH-224DB/BEBE DVD/CD Writer £10.09 Operating System Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 (OEM) (64-bit) £69.99 Total: £682.61 Probably not going to do any overclocking but should I look at the i5-4690k ?? Maybe AMD CPU setup is the way to go for my needs? I'm really not sure. Oh and one last and very important piece of kit that I need is an APC due to living in the countryside and losing power (sometimes for a second or two and sometimes for longer so I'll need enough time to shut everything down safely). I've looked at something like this APC-BE700G-UK-Interface-Power-Saving-Back-UPS for about £80 from Amazon. I don't mind spending a little more (maybe a little over £100 if again, really needed). - complete build including the APC - I'm looking around the £800 mark. Thanks in advance for any help. All advice is greatly appreciated. Cheers Tintin
