  1. Would there be any penalty trying to boot with the cpu if was indeed incompatible, such as damaging my motherboard?
  2. So I bought a z87 motherboard from frys when it was on sale. I thought this was great until I did some digging on the Internet about Haswell Refresh cpu compatability with z87 motherboards and found out that the processor I also purchased on sale, the intel I5 4790k, may only be compatible with my motherboard after a bios update. My motherboard is the msi z87-gd65 gaming and I would like to know if there is anything I can do at this point besides buying another non-refresh haswell cpu and using that to boot the system so that I can update the bios and use the cpu I own. Any solution and/or advice would be helpful, Thanks.
  3. Oh and I forgot to mention that I intend to overclock the hell out of this rig for optimum performance.
  4. Thanks for helping out. Any advice at all is very much appreciated! 1. Budget and Location: My hope is to spend around $1000 USD, but I could be tempted to go over if needed. 2. Aim: My main goal for this Pc is heavy 1440p gaming and productivity using programs such as word and excel. In the future however I do hope to dabble in music production and photography as well. I need this Pc to last me at least the next four years in school so newer technologies are appreciated. I have also heard good things about Intel and Nvidia from my friends with Pc building experience so keep that in mind when formulating a parts list. 4. Peripherals: The OS should be included in the price but nothing else is required. If you can fit something such as a nice mouse and keyboard into or a little over the budget I might change my mind. 5. Why am I upgrading: I have been using a MacBook Air for the last couple of years but it has finally started to become dated. I've always wanted to game on a pc and I have finally saved up enough money to build one that will hopefully last me the next couple of years. Thanks again for all your help!
