  1. Thanks a lot for the reply, I'll look into these. I thought of getting a new battery / charger ofc, the thing is that I'm not sure they're the exact source of the problem, since the PC now is very slow both with and without battery. As for cooling, I forgot to mention that I did use realtemp, and the temperature was low, always arround 40 / 50 degrees.
  2. I guess I should, and will do that. But I'm almost certain the issue has to do with power, the issue started when the battery started failing, and is now generalized even when there is no battery.
  3. Here's the issue: whether the laptop has a battery in (that doesn't charge, stuck at 0) or is just with the plug, it has very very low performance, it's just super slow. In task manager, it shows that the CPU (an i7) and HDD aren't doing much, always in a low %. Before it was a very fast laptop, it probably cost over a thousand euro, and it's about 2 years old. For quite a while, the battery only charged at some moments, like one time out of two. Then it didn't charge at all, and now it's stuck at 0 and can't be charged at all (the perso who used it wasn't very careful, I wish he hadn't let the battery go all the way down). The performance problem started to happen when the battery was low, but now it also happens when the PC is plugged with no battery. Another thing is that the plug isn't original. I know the issue has to do with power, it happens on both windows and Linux, and the componants are very good. I've tried updating the BIOS to different versions, didn't change a thing. I also checked the temperature, pretty low, in the 40's, 50's degrees. So what could be the problem ? Would it work again with a new battery? A new plug? Does the fact that the battery fucked up over time somehow endamaged a component in the PC, and that can't really be fixed?
  4. It's not an option, when I windows+q and type disk management, I try to control+shift+enter it and the administrator message doesn't appear, it straight up loads the page. I can rightclick diskmgmt.msc and click "open as administrator" but same thing, there's no admin message and it straight up loads Disk Management. I'm on windows 8.1.
  5. I have this USB External HDD, that doesn't appear anywhere on my computer except in disk management, as "unknown", and "not initialized": https://i.imgur.com/wqdZNwq.png?1 (I can also eject the HDD with the "safely remove hardware" icon in the tray... I can eject "Ext HDD 1021"...) When I right click it and press initialize disk, whether I chose GPT or MBR, I get an error saying "Virtual Disk Manager: Access is denied". There's no important data on the disk, so I could afford to format it (there's no option for that yet, obviously). Does anyone know of a software or a trick to somehow make the drive usable again ? Also, here's what I get in diskpart, this is quite weird. I can select disk 1 even though it's not listed with list disk... https://i.imgur.com/ClCNcgX.png?1
  6. Do you mean that you want to delete windows.old ? If so follow this link: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/How-do-I-remove-the-Windows-old-folder
  7. EDIT: Thanks guys, I finally did it and everything works well, the temps in game dropped of 20 degrees ! Sorry for that newbie thread, it wasn't that hard.
  8. Yup, its very baddly designed, I hate it when manufactorers do their best to make it harder for you. Anyway yep, I've made some more research and asked other people and I'll try to unplug them, it doesn't seem as scary as it was a few days ago haha. Also tweezers is a good idea for some of the cables ! I also planned to clean all the dust I can yeah, but I don't think that I'll change the fan.
  9. No haha, I would have seen it, as you can see on the pics with the bottom of the laptop the CPU is in the middle, with the heat sink on it. The problem is that I can't access it by any side.
  10. I'll check that out thanks, its a Packard Bell Easy Note LS 11-HR Well it seems like its the normal way, but I mean so many things are plugged into it that are not supposed to be removed... its so baddly designed. I'll try to find the manual see if it says anything yeah.
  11. http://imgur.com/a/fLk3d So yeah... the other day I wanted to change the thermal paste of my 5 year old laptop, overheating is a big issue for it, and the reason why I can barely run any game (the GPU basically stops itself at about 30% usage because it's always at 75+ degrees). And as you can see in the link, the heat pipes, CPU, and GPU are under the mobo when I remove the keyboard. I could try to remove the mother board and then access them, but there is at least 4 or 5 things plugged to it that I don't really know about and that really look like they're not supposed to be unplugged, or even detached from it. So... should I try unplugging them anyway ? should I maybe break some parts of the PC case at the bottom ? what do you guys think.
  12. I think it's 2.5 inches, maybe a big bigger, but it's really laptop sized. and it fits right into it so the laptop can support exactly that. Also I can select "IDE controler" and chose between Disabled, Primary, and Both. it's set to both by default but i've tried booting with each of them, none of them changed anything.
  13. A BIOS update could work yeah.... but that laptop is so old, it's very hard to find resources about its BIOS online, moreover I think I had already updated it once after another issue, and there probably hasn't been any new versions recently. I tried disabling everything but it, and it still ended up telling me no Ethernet cable was plugged, which means it tried everything until the network boot. Also yeah, I can install Ubuntu on it ! But as soon as I have to restart, it can't boot again into the hard drive. I guess i'll just give up, its pretty hopeless, thanks for the replies tho guys ! (that said I still could try an adapter)
  14. Oh right, I forgot to mention it. With an USK stick and Ubuntu as an installer, when I try "try Ubuntu without installing", yes, I can access the HDD. So I think it's all about the BIOS... the question then is if there's any software that would help me boot from the HDD without it.
  15. Hmmm that's weird... did you get the installer by burning a .iso file on a CD / USB ? Maybe you're just having some hardware that isn't very well supported by GNU/Linux yet, you should maybe try with Linux Mint or a different Ubuntu distro
