  1. @LIGISTX ah the 6TB/10TB drive thing was just there because I was checking prices. it's going to be one of the other - havent decided I thought the RAM I chose was ECC? or is there a big difference between unbuffered/registered ECC? Thanks for pointing out that heatsink. Will switch over to that
  2. Planning on building a new server. Would like to get a quick sanity check on components in terms of compatibility (with each other, and with unraid in general). I'll be migrating a few drives over from my current system (7 drives in total) Link: https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/user/nem2k/saved/C7yTHx Use case: # of concurrent users for all of the below: 2 Emby (iGPU transcoding) Media management (Radarr, Sonarr etc) Web server MySQL database for some side projects File server for backups Nextcloud Wireguard Will eventually be installing a GPU (3070) and passing it through to a VM for some machine learning things once in a while Might run a 2nd instance of pihole here incase my primary goes down Questions: Will the cooler fit inside the 4U case? Is the PSU overkill? Is the RAM compatible? (dont see it on the QVL for the motherboard) In terms of PCIe, eventually I can see myself filling the slots with GPU, HBA, 10Gb NIC. The GPU will likely be a dual slot card, rendering one of the PCIe inaccessible. How do people usually get around a problem like this? Was originally aiming for a 2378G, but those things are impossible to find. How much of a real world performance drop will the 2176G be? Instead of the Xeon/ECC/C246 combo, I was also considering a more consumer-level setup based on a 10th gen i7. Any major benefits one way or the other? Any other potential pitfalls to watch out for in terms of unraid compatibility?
  3. Is IPMI a feature of the motherboard or the CPU? For example, will IPMI be available if I pair an i7-10700k with a supermicro motherboard? or would you need to use a xeon for it to work?
  4. I've been eyeballing some of the new Xeon E-23xxG CPUs for a new server build, for example, the E-2378G (https://www.intel.ca/content/www/ca/en/products/sku/212262/intel-xeon-e2378g-processor-16m-cache-2-80-ghz/specifications.html) I see that it was released Q3'21, but have not been able to find a single retailer to purchase the CPU from in Canada Is this because of current supply chain issues causing low supply? Or is it because server-grade components don't reach consumer outlets until a while after their launch date? (I'm not sure how enterprise and consumer markets differ in terms of rollout schedules) In essence, when might I realistically be able to get my hands on one of these? If it's supply chain issues I can just keep searching and hoping for stock, but if its because consumer rollout is typically delayed then I might just look at the 22xx series instead...
  5. ah I see. does it matter that the compatibility doesn't show up with both GSkill and Asus? or are these lists generally out of date/incomplete anyway?
  6. I'm planning on getting the following for a new build: AMD Ryzen 9 5900X 3.7 GHz 12-Core Processor Asus TUF GAMING X570-PRO (WI-FI) ATX AM4 Motherboard G.Skill Trident Z Neo 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3600 CL16 Memory I checked the QVL for the motherboard and couldn't find the RAM on there. In fact, there doesn't seem to be any 2x16GB kits listed at all for F4-3600C16D. Maybe I'm looking at the wrong QVL, or reading it wrong. Does anyone know whether there'll be any compatibility issues running the above?
  7. Thats interesting. I was under the impression that the 3D cache would be as part of an updated 5900/5950X, rather than in some completely new unannounced cpu (ie they were just showcasing the 3D cache 5950X as a tech demo rather than an actual product) Can anyone comfirm one way or the other?
  8. Im in the market for a new custom PC build as I managed to get my hands on a graphics card recently. For the CPU, I was thinking of getting the 5900X, but heard that new V-cache versions of those processors will be coming out soonish Is it worth waiting for those new CPUs at this point? Is the performance gain enough to warrant a 3-6month wait (or however long itll end up being)
  9. are there any decent android tablets that have HDMI input? I will use it as a regular tablet most of the time, but sometimes I would like to use it as a "second monitor" for my laptop via a HDMI cable
  10. Has anyone tried using a clamp style monitor stand (triple monitors) on one of those cheap IKEA desks? I hear that some of their desks are hollow, or made out of cheap fiberboard, that may not be able to withstand the clamping pressure of a stand holding 3 monitors. I havent purchased either yet, just wondering whether this combo would be a good/bad idea Example stand: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0034PUWNS/?coliid=I9TC88XSUSFLY&colid=2RB6ZWWFZJJ78&psc=0&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it Example desk: https://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/S29084966/?cid=ps|ca|shopping|201804041739217864_1
  11. Im looking for a 12+ button mouse for various games, as well as productivity for work (i.e. mapping commonly used shortcuts to the mouse), and currently deciding between the Logitech G600 and the Corsair Scimitar ProIm leaning towards the Scimitar simply because I have a Corsair keyboard and would be nice to consolidate everything into a single application. However, I notice that the G600 has "shaped" buttons that makes it easy to distinguish each of the 12 buttons, and essentially makes them more identifiable as 2 groups of 6, whereas the Scimitar only has a texture difference (which I have read doesnt seem to help much)For those with the G600, do you find that the button shape helps you press the buttons more accurately? Similarly, for those with the Scimitar, do you ever have a hard time with accurate button presses when trying to do things quickly? If you have experience with both, which mouse is more prone to accidental button presses when picking up the mouse?
  12. the reason is because I need a motherboard that supports 2 pcie 16x slots and server grade versions of those boards are usually only found in ATX form factor, so I dont really have a choice I already have an 804 (thats what my server is currently housed in), but because of the pcie slot issue I think I need a bigger motherboard and hence a bigger case
  13. I'm looking for a case that can house an ATX size motherboard and hold 8x 3.5" drives Now, many cases meet those requirements, but I want something in a "short" form factor like the Node 804 (http://www.fractal-design.com/home/product/cases/node-series/node-804). so something that has a somewhat square design and the least amount of height possible Any recommendations?
  14. Im setting up an area to charge all of my USB equipment (phones, tablets etc) so I'm looking for a USB hub where I can just plug in devices when needed. The catch is that some of my devices are USB type C that allows for fast charging. For example, when my Nexus 5x is plugged into the wall with an adapter it fast charges at 5v/3A Additionally, I want to charge non-computer related equipment like flashlights using older USB ports (https://www.amazon.ca/Rechargeable-Handheld-Flashlight-Magnetic-Lighting/dp/B01LYJY7PT/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1515898753&sr=8-2&keywords=olight+s1r) Are there any USB hubs on the market that meets the following criteria: 1. at least 6 ports 2. has 1 or 2 USB type C ports 3. can fast charge type C devices that support it (Im guessing port would need to provide upwards of 2.4A for this to work...) Do these types of hubs even exist?
  15. I'm looking for a bluetooth mouse that I can use with my laptop without a USB receiver (laptop has bluetooth builtin) Importantly, I want something that is similar in size and feel to the Logitech M510: https://www.logitech.com/en-ca/product/wireless-mouse-m510
