  1. Hey guys, So I'm about to sound like a real "1st world problems" douchebag but I legitimately need some advice. I've got a nighthawk tri band wifi router with 2 5GHz bands and 1 2.4GHz band all running in the automatic configuration. Speedtest says I'm getting about 100Mbps down and 10-12Mbps up. These numbers, while great, aren't reflecting real world use. My speeds are far from slow but definitely don't feel 100Mbps. These devices range from my iPhone to my MacBook Pro and even my wife's new Acer V Nitro laptop. All these devices are capable of AC so I'm not sure what to do. Is it a matter of channel optimization? Can anyone explain the discrepancy between my speedtest numbers and real world use?
  2. Wow I have never seen a more helpful community. Thank you all for your suggestions, this is really going to help me pick out the best specs for his buck.
  3. Hey guys, So my cousin is asking me to build him the best custom PC for a budget of $600 USD. He wants the computer to be powerful enough for some casual gaming but mostly will use it as his entertainment PC as well as the usual web browsing and email. I am wondering if you have any recommendations for the best parts to fit his budget so he can have a kick ass rig. Aesthetics aren't that important to him but he does like the red/black look if that helps. Thanks in advance and I look forward to hearing all of your thoughts.
  4. For Christmas I built my in-laws a new computer which included a 500GB HDD from Seagate. Two weeks ago while visiting they told me the computer stopped booting and weren't sure why. So upon inspection I noticed that their MBR became corrupted so I attempted to fix this using Bootrec. When I tried using Bootrec /fixmbr I was given the error "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error" with the error code 0x8007045D. The computer is less than a month old so I don't think the HDD is dead, but I cannot fix it for the life of me. I've tried booting the Windows 10 recovery tool from two different USB thumb drives with the same error anytime I attempt to clean the disk using Diskpart. The only thing I haven't tried is booting from Linux to format the drive from an external OS, which is what I'm in the middle of doing. Does anyone have any advice as to how to proceed? Is the drive dead? I'm not really sure what to do at this point and replacing the drive is going to suck if the drive is dead. Thank you in advance to anyone with any advice on the matter.
  5. My wife recently bought her first PC from Acer. I have an old 2TB Western Digital hard drive I was using when I had my old PC back in 2013. I have since switched to a Retina MacBook Pro. I would like to know if anyone here has any thoughts about the best method of backing up to the same drive? I initially thought of using a cloud service like CrashPlan as this would elimnate the need to format the drive but I want to know if I can use CrashPlan to backup both my Mac and her PC without having to format the drive? It is currently formatted as NTFS. Thanks in advance for your advice.
  6. Wow that was a very fast and very helpful response from the community! Looks like I'm going to have to save up and upgrade to the Haswell Xeon with a new mobo. Thanks everyone!
  7. The GPU is a bigger bottleneck than the CPU? How do you figure?
  8. I currently have a build that works decent for what I use it for but I really could use overall better performance and power. Especially with video editing which is one of my major duties at my work. After running some tests I know my bottleneck is my CPU since it's an older Intel Core i3-2105. The specs of my build are as follows Intel Core i3-2105 16GB G.Skill 1066MHz RAM 2TB Seagate Desktop SSHD 500GB Seagate Barracuda HDD Sapphire Radeon HD 5770 1GB 500W PSU Antec P70 Case I'm wondering if someone could help me figure out the best quad core CPU that will give me good overall performance but also do well with heavy strains of Adobe Premiere Pro CS5. Thank you.
  9. Hey everyone, I'm new here and I'm looking for some advice on a handheld mic that I would be using to record footage at the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, NV. Since I'm expecting there to be an obscene amount of people in attendance, I'd like to know the best handheld mic I could use with my Canon HG10 that would isolate my voice enough to be distinguished from the crowds surrounding me? If anyone has any insight, please let me know. Thank you.
