  1. I managed to get my hands on a spare 6600k from a friend and it has the same issues. It booted up into the bios twice, and I left it on for a while, only to see it turned off when I return (stayed on for maybe an hour or two) on a test bench setup with 1 ram, no gpu, default intel cooler. I took the board to my local supplier and they said they dont repair z170 boards, have none in stock and it would be unethical to charge $70 to tell me that the board is dead and they can't do anything about it. What I dont get is that it turns on and functions perfectly, until it shuts itself down and won't turn on for a while with no visible physical defects. I can't remove the IO shield due to a lack of tools and it's turned on again using the original CPU and sitting in BIOS (after a couple of PSU resets). If there's no further input, i'll close the thread, thanks for helping everyone
  2. I've left the computer unplugged for a while, and now its stuck in a boot loop, tried booting with no memory installed and it shuts down before getting to POST. Probably a dead motherboard.. i'm surprised that this kind of thing can happen in the middle of doing absolutely nothing spectacular. Just one day, it gives out
  3. If it's of any help, I had a look at the event logs again and saw a couple of errors before it had shut down. The first error (top => down) is the one recording the shutdown was unexpected. The next couple of errors are all about something binding to a port, which I have no idea it's trying to do. The warning logs look like this Going to try disable BITS off and see if that restores stability.
  4. Hmm interesting take on the situation. However, I think it can be eliminated as I've tried to boot without any peripherals/sata cables plugged into the PSU, which means the pump had no power (powered by molex) and it failed before it even POST'ed
  5. The computer just turned off after being idle on the windows desktop for a while and won't turn on again It was on integrated graphics and with the power/reset pins unplugged.. running out of ideas!
  6. Sorry for the late reply, was prepping for dinner (NZ time) So I unplugged all the case power pins and turned the system on successfully, but I can't be sure if its one of those intermittent successes. I've changed my BIOS settings to use the integrated graphics in case I don't get a chance until later. This is the first boot of the day since 6am last night, so its been off for about 12 hours and I've seen a higher boot success rate once I've left it off overnight. I'll keep it on for a while (gtg eat) and update the thread if there's any more occurrences of the shutdown.
  7. Ah unfortunately, I am using hardline pipes trying to avoid taking it apart unless its a final resort
  8. Hey all, thanks for the quick responses! I'll try respond one by one: There's an onboard power, reset and CMOS clear switch that I've tried, but have the same results Regarding integrated graphics, if I can get it to power on again, I'll try change the settings to use the onboard chip, but it defaults to the PCIE slot 1 until I can get into BIOS I've tried re-plugging the SATA cables too (sorry will make an edit in the post). Thanks for the input! Not that I can see visually.. no smell of dead PCB either I'll give it another inspection though
  9. Hi, I've got a system which suddenly stopped working recently, but it's not something I've ever seen before. One day I was using the computer, some light gaming and the windows shutdown sequence was initiated without any warning and shut down completely. I tried to turn the pc back on, and all the lights would turn on for about 2~3 seconds and then power down. The power button will not be responsive until I restart the power supply at the switch or wait an arbitrary amount of time and hold down the power button, which will do the same thing. I've tried reading the error codes, and the last one I can see is 22, but sometimes stops on 40 (which neither are in the online manual). Thing is, sometimes it will turn on sometimes and run without issues. Sometimes it will stay up for the whole session (6+ hours) or sometimes power down in ~10 minutes following the windows shutdown sequence. When it did boot correct, I ran the intel memory test, cpu test for about 30 minutes and passed totally fine with CPU temps maxing at 40 degrees C. Specs: CPU: i7-6700k Mobo: Gigabyte Z170X Gaming 7 Bios version F22m Ram: G.Skill 2400mhz 2x 8gb PSU: EVGA P2 850W GPU: MSI 980Ti Lightning Storage: Samsung 850 EVO Hardline Water-cooled with 1x 360 Rad Windows 10 64bit Things I've tried: reseat the ram re-plug in all power cables try another power supply with different cables tried turning off eco mode on the PSU reset the BIOS try the backup BIOS try with single ram (even ran memtest when it did successfully load, it did power down in the first 2 tests) turn off fast boot in windows and bios turn off all OC and XMP Re plug in all SATA/power cables I don't have a spare CPU/mobo (second pc is of different generation) and am trying to avoid reseating the CPU because its water-cooled and has a liquid metal compound which is hard to remove/reapply (EK Tim indigo extreme). I've been using the system for the past 4~5 years and haven't had any issues till now edit: Got my hands on another 6600K, seems to have the same issue so I think it's a board issue. Since the standby power works fine, i'll probably relegate it to a usb charging hub edit: when it does power on, I checked the windows event logs, and it can only detect that there was a critical issue with an unexpected shutdown.
  10. Try another PSU, if u can. I had a situation where my computer would suddenly shut down, the PSU was the issue
  11. Just went out and bought a new 850w p2 from the local store, works fine! Kinda bummed that the power supply died after 4 years, I guess it's about time? How long do power supplies last on average?
  12. Just tested with a 550W evga psu, but without the graphics card plugged in as Im wary of its power draw. Furmark has been running for about 10 minutes off the iGPU, time to walk down to the nearest psu provider?
  13. This is what I'm leaning towards.. hmm warranty ran out for my power supply a year ago T.T
  14. The system has been working for a couple of years, I am skeptical about this one
  15. Hey guys, looking for a bit of advice. My computer started dying randomly 2 days ago: as if the plug has been pulled out. Then the bios setting to turn it on after sudden AC power loss kicks in turning it back on. Temps on both the GPU and CPU look fine, in the mid 20s low 30s. It shutdown anytime between booting into windows (even before the login screen appears) to stress testing. Furmark kills the computer 99% of the time, there was one instance where it completed a 4k stress test after doing a DDU and fresh install of the nvidia drivers. Specs: gigabyte z170x gaming 7 bios f22 6700K reverted to stock speeds 980 Ti Lightning reverted to vanilla bios evga g2 1000W psu (about 4/5 years old) 16gb ram 2400 cl14 gskill 500g b 860 evo and 120gb 850 pro 2tb harddisk custom water cooled windows 10 64bit I would prefer to avoid taking it all apart cos its a hassle, so I'm looking for ideas until the weekend when I have time to pull it apart. Get creative Thanks in advance~
