I have to get Windows 8.1 first and for that upgrade I need all the Windows 8 updates. I should have gone the easy route and just used Windows 7 to upgrade to 10. Also that wouldn't work, because my key would stay a Windows 7 key.

I will upgrade to Windows 10. It's just that I want to get my Windows 7 to Windows 8 upgrade key to become an actual OS key. I installed basically everything it told me was important.

So I just freshly installed Windows 8 Pro 64Bit (upgraded from Windows 7) and everything worked fine, until I installed all the 147 important updates. Now the system has finally rebooted and is basically started, it is completely broken. It starts to the normal desktop, not the metro UI and no other programs start. I don't see a mouse cursor and it only reacts to ctrl+alt+del, which brings me to a black screen. That's everything I can do. Also I've tried to reset the system and do a clean reinstall, which gave me the exact same results after bringing the system up to date. Any help will be appreciated.

@tech_dreamer It's 15:30 over here. @starex I could do that, but I only have a single Windows 7 license, which I need on my notebook. Also I want this "only upgrade from win7 to win8" license to become a full Windows license.

So here's my plan: I'm going to download a Windows 7 ISO and make a bootable USB drive. Next I'm going to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8 (because my Win 8 key is only for upgrading) and upgrade Windows 8.0 to Windows 8.1. Then (at least I'm hoping) I can finally get my hands on Windows 10. It's gonna be a long day.

I actually haven't read this one yet, but the fixes only seem to be available up to XP/Vista.

Did everything as you said, but now I get the error instantly after starting the update. I guess I'm going to have to set back my system and try again.

My current problem: 11gb patch didn't work, so I'm downloading a 13.6gb one now and I bet it will fail too. Also I can't just download the ISO because my key wouldn't get upgraded to Windos 10. "flawless start"

WTF Microsoft. So I just downloaded the 5.5gb of glorious Windows 10 and everything went well, until it got stuck in prepartions. So I stopped it and restarted it. Now I have to download another 8.2gb. That makes anohter 2 and a half hours of wasted time in my life.

Try to search for updates and while it searches activate the cmd prompt.

Completely random, I guess. I've got the same problem. I think there's a way to force it though.

19 hours after Windows 10 was officially released and I still haven't recieved the update.
