  1. Thanks, I kind of figured those were the cases but I like being careful. And yeah, I'm using all my SATA ports
  2. I'm looking at getting a 980 Pro 2tb, but I'm concerned my motherboard will disable SATA ports. I can't find anything in the manual (Linked below) that'd suggest it would, but I know that some motherboards disable SATA ports when using both m.2 slots. I already have a 970 2tb in my main m.2 slot, so the 980 pro 2tb m.2 2280 is going to go into the second slot. Relevant portion (I think) from the manual: my motherboard's manual So my questions: 1. Will putting a second m.2 drive onto my motherboard disable any SATA ports or anything else? 2. Is the 980 Pro 2tb still problematic? Did the firmware for sure fix things?
  3. be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4 50.5 CFM CPU Cooler is the cooler I use, and thank you - I think I'm going to go with the CL16 and try to OC the ram
  4. I want to go from 32gb to 64gb, and I'd like to just buy a new pack of ram since my CPU Cooler is blocking a slot. Plus the cost isn't that different and it'd be nice to have some spare ram. I'm looking at Corsair VENGEANCE LPX DDR4 64GB (2x32GB) 3200MHz CL16 Intel XMP 2.0 Computer Memory - Black (CMK64GX4M2E3200C16) either the 3200mhz CL16 or 3600mhz CL18. Which would be better for gaming, docker, VMs, etc.? 3200mhz CL16 or 3600mhz CL18? I'm a programmer, so I use a lot of docker containers and VMs... Plus Jetbrains products, which are memory hungry
  5. Nah really it was 100% my fault, don't worry about it - I appreciate the help! And yeah I checked the web interface already, a lot of the files aren't there. I'm trying to find a decent file "undeleter" to try to get the data back though, but need to get a SATA cable first
  6. I disabled Onedrive in safe mode with networking, then I re-enabled it and... It deleted everything! How can I get it back? I'm not blaming you, this was 100% my screw up
  7. On Windows 10 64-bit, a few updates behind, when I try to backup the Onedrive folder from explorer it gives the error "The file cannot be accessed by the system" - even though the file actually exists locally and isn't online (At all, it's literally just local). When I try to use Hiren's bootable USB (PE) to back it up, I get "files being used by another program". I've tried changing the ownership of the folders/files to a newly created account and turning Onedrive off, but it still gives me that error. How can I backup the Onedrive folder? The account it's syncing to is already at 103% usage (5gb plan) so unless I upgrade the Onedrive account, syncing to Onedrive is out. This is all in Safe Mode, I can't boot into non-safe mode
  8. The PC in question is an HP PC from Walmart a few years ago for around $400: It's an HP desktop No idea on the CPU or video card, but it has 4gb of ram 500gb hdd Windows 10... Home? 64-bit Mods: Please don't delete this thread, I'll edit it with more details when I get a chance to look at the specs again. My MIL's computer is having trouble, here's what she said was happening at first: It took forever to load, and when it did it was a black screen. We gave her another monitor to test and it had the same issue. After awhile it stopped getting into what I ASSUMED was Windows, and just stayed at the loading screen with the HP logo and said "Diagnosing your PC" We went over with Hiren's bootcd PE and I messed around with various tools - tested the hard drive, memory, etc. and it all worked. I then ran easyBCD and tried to repair and it seemed to have worked? I'm getting back into Windows with a black/blank screen again. After that I tried booting into safe mode and it worked once, but not again after the first time - it would give an innocent message about restarting and it rebooted - safe mode just will not work anymore. SO I went into Windows 10 repair and tried to uninstall the latest updates and that's where I left things - it was taking forever so we came home and I'm going to go over there again today. The uninstall finished after about an hour for the record. It's still just loading into windows (I think), but with no display. It's not a video card issue because Hiren's works just fine. I also tried using ctrl+shift+win+b to reset the video device to no avail. Does anyone have any ideas as to what we can try? I'd like to keep her files and stuff, so I'd really rather not format but will if we need to.
  9. I appreciate the reply, but I managed to do it myself last week. I tried cloning the drive but booting into it, it kept crashing so I ended up just cloning to my backup hard drive, doing a fresh install, and then mounting the cloned drive and copy/paste.
  10. This may be a dumb question, but I downloaded Macrium Reflect and it's not a bootable program... How can I boot into it and clone my main windows drive? Is there a documentation page for that?
  11. 1. Sadly I have to return one of them. A guy can dream though 2. Is there a benefit to reimaging (which I'm assuming is just reinstalling the OS?) over cloning? I've been using this drive for 2 weeks, so it's not like there's anything I don't want on it (yet...) 3. How can I make sure the windows install is working without issue? I mean I obviously haven't noticed anything wrong beyond that weird m.2 issue, but I'm curious if there's a tool that verifies files or something. 4. Will the free version work fine for what I'm doing? I just want to be able to run it, copy old drive to new drive as perfectly and exactly as possible, then use the new drive as my boot drive without having to do anything else.
  12. A few days ago I posted a thread about my NVMe M.2 2 TB Samsung Evo Pro 970 SSD potentially being bad. I've since got it working again in my desktop (Just put it back in the M.2 slot... And it worked. Worked in my laptop too), however when this all happened I had initiated an RMA through Amazon. I just got the replacement SSD today - same exact brand, size, type, etc. and I'm wondering if I should use it instead of the original in case this problem is intermittent or pops up again in a way that I can't fix. Given that, and the fact that I've run a Full Scan in Samsung Magician (And a check disk, as well as checked the SMART in Crystaldiskinfo) and they all came up perfectly clean... What should I do? I have 1tb free on one of my hard drives that I can back everything up to (Using what? I want to backup registry and stuff too - so it'd have to be when I'm not in Windows), but I'd prefer to just clone the old SSD to the new one since they're identical and I really don't want to have to reinstall everything, dig through the registry/configs, etc.. To sum things up: (Since I kind of rambled above) Would it be worthwhile to use the replacement SSD I just got, given that I got the old one working again and it's completely free of any errors (SMART, checkdisk, Samsung Magician Full Scan) If so, what should I use to back absolutely everything up? If feasible, would cloning the old SSD to the new one be better than backing up and manually reinstalling, reconfiguring, and restoring everything by hand? I would really prefer to just clone if it's safe to do with a Windows 11 boot drive. If I do clone, what (Free) software should I use to do it?
  13. I just ran a "Full Scan" on it and it came back with no bad blocks. The SMART looks good too (Although I can't run extended SMART self-test? It complains about not having latest nvme driver, but I'm using newer than what's on the Samsung site (Windows 11's driver))
  14. Backed everything up on laptop, put it back in my desktop to see if it would work again and it did... It was seen in the bios, so I ran windows startup repair from my windows 11 usb just in case. Anyone know what could have caused all this?
  15. I have a SUPER weird issue with my Samsung 970 evo plus 2tb nvme m.2 SSD... For some reason I woke up this morning and the bios didn't see it anymore. I tried swapping it to a different slot with no luck. So just because, I tried to put it in my laptop and it worked! Currently copying files off it. The weirder thing though? I put my laptop's nvme drive into my desktop and... The bios sees it just fine? What's going on here? I'm using the latest bios for my motherboard, so that should be fine. Not that it matters(?) but the SSD has Windows 11 pro on it. Relevant parts: MSI MAG X570S TOMAHAWK MAX WIFI ATX AM4 Motherboard Samsung 970 Evo Plus 2 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive
  16. Changed some things around as per recommendations, although I went with K instead of F series in case something happens to my GPU and I need to debug. 17. I plan on upgrading my monitors next year, a lot of stuff I do is pretty demanding - especially the encoding. And the reason I went with AMD is because of the heat and power usage - apparently it's a lot lower.

My two main concerns are the motherboard in general and not supporting 6 hard drives + 1 M.2, and maybe the cooler not cooling it enough (Not going water/aio - air only). I spent hours with a friend trying to figure out which motherboard would work best, and the one above is what we decided on - unless anyone has any issues with it.
  19. Anyone able to help me? I need advice on my build - if the CPU/mobo are good (Especially for lots of drives), if the SSD is good, can the build transcode to h.265 quickly? Which cooler is best? Which surge protector is better? Any advice or whatever is welcome.
  20. Budget (including currency): $2500 USD Country: USA Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Elden Ring, Docker, Web/PHPStorm, allllllllll the browsers (I'm a web developer and need to test in most browsers - so ram is important), Plex, Handbrake (Mostly h.264->h.265 transcoding). Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): I already have a 1060 6gb that I plan on replacing next year, however given how I mostly have CPU limited tasks it works for me for now. I'm upgrading from an I7-4790k with 24gb of ram and obviously the 1060 6gb. I also have 2 1080p 60hz monitors (Again, future upgrade). I plan on buying next month. My part list I list two CPU coolers because I'm unsure of which one to get, I hear both are good. I also list two surge protectors because again, I don't know which one to get but hear both are good. Also: I have 4 hard drives and 2 SSDs (All SATA) that ideally I'd like to keep on the new PC. Any tips, advice, critique, experience, etc. with what I've chosen is really helpful - I don't follow hardware that closely.
  21. Thanks! Does this board use two sata ports for m.2 like some boards do?
  22. I'm a programmer as well, so "general use" for me is running IDEs, hundreds of tabs, and sometimes VMs and docker. Thanks, but will cheaper boards have as many SATA ports?

The list above is what I am transferring from my old build, and are listed in the PCPartPicker list as well. I plan on getting an Oculus Quest 2 and eventually a video card (When they're back in stock), so I want to have something that can eventually power PC-based tethered VR games. I also use this as a Plex server, so enough SATA ports for my hard drives is a must (I have 2 SSD and 4 HDD, I plan on getting rid of two HDD and replacing them with a 6tb drive, and getting rid of one of the SSD since it's only a 256gb, and fairly old)
